Advanced Language Teaching and Methodology

This course is aimed at non-native English teachers and teacher trainers in secondary
and university sector education. The course enables participants to:

Gain confidence in and improve their use of the English language

Reflect critically on current language teaching methodology and stimulate continuing
professional development.
Share ideas and promote greater self-awareness as teachers.
Explore and evaluate materials and resources and expand the range of classroom
activities available to the teacher.

The course employs an extensive range of resources including CALL, ELT methodology
materials as well as general English books, tapes and videos. Current language
teaching methodology will reflect participants’ classroom practice. We take a ‘loop
input’ and heuristic approach to these courses. All sessions contribute towards both
language learning and pedagogy.

The course content will vary according to the particular needs, teaching contexts and
interests of the group. However, there are standard components that are taught on
every course. These are:

Advanced language analysis and input

EAP and ESP
Testing
Needs analysis and syllabus design
Lesson observations
Project work
Current ELT methodology
Material evaluation and selection.

We ask all participants to complete a detailed pre-course needs analysis.
