Poliomyelitis

The poliomyelitis recognized by modem medicine is an acute epidemic disease

caused by the poliomyelitis virus. In traditional Chinese medicine this disease is
believed to be caused by an attack of wind, dampness and heat pathogens through the
mouth to the lungs and stomach. At the early stage, patients may suffer from fever,
cough, red throat, and vomiting and diarrhea, which are the symptoms caused by the
attack of pathogens to the lungs and stomach. They may suffer from pain in limbs due
to an invasion of pathogens blocking the meridians and disturbing the circulation of qi
and blood; and finally, the numbness and paralysis of the limbs may appear to be due
to malnutrition of muscles.

Treatment:

Foot massage: The massage is applied to pituitary gland (4), head (1), cerebellum (3),
coeliac plexus (20), lymph nodes (upper body, 39), lymph nodes (abdomen, 40),

paralysis of upper body, shoulder (10), scapula (59), elbow joint (60), trapezius
muscle (11), neck (53) and thoracic spine (54) reflecting areas may be added; and for
paralysis of lower body, hip joint (38), knee (35), waist (55) and sacrum (56)
reflecting areas may be added (Fig. 95).
