Government shutdown looms over the healthcare debate: Republicans and Democrats need to compromise and truly serve

the American people. By: Alex Mendez

Anyone who watches the news has no doubt heard about the

ghting going on in DC. Whether you support Senator Ted Cruzs amazing 21-hour speech, or feel that it was a waste of time, something needs to be done! In usual manner, Democratic Senator Harry Reid is refusing any sort of compromise and wants bad policy, such as Obamacare, to be implemented no matter what the cost to the taxpayer is. Now, what needs to be understood is that if the government does shutdown, those on Medicare and Social Security will still receive their benets; those who want now apply after the shutdown will have to wait until it reopens. Also, military personnel will continued to be paid due to a House resolution passed yesterday by a unanimous vote. Our contractors will not be able to go into work until the shutdown is over however. The issue is that now the President and is his fellow Democrats in

the Senate are not willing to come to the table to compromise on the issue of healthcare. Both sides need to be able to come together for the benet of our nation and pass true healthcare reform. Instead of this happening, the democrats in the House and Senate are willing to

implement this train wreck of bill, that is a jobs killer, just because the Almighty wanted it. Politics is give and take, Republicans over the past few years have been willing to come to the table and compromise because they understand this idea. The President and his followers instead act like children, demanding 100% of everything with no room for compromise. This is the issue our nation faces, strong divide amongst one another, and both sides need to meet and discuss true healthcare reform. The simple fact that the left is willing to shutdown the government shows the stubbornness Republicans are dealing with. Just last night I was on the phone with my mother, the person who got me interested in politics, and she tells me how we never heard about government shutdowns so frequently, it was after Obama was elected, she tells me, almost every 6 months we hear about another possible shutdown and its terrible and just bad policy. As always, I agree with my mother; politicians need to wake up and realize they work for you and I, the American people. Their job is to make sure we pay our bills, and to create laws and programs that support the American dream. Obamacare will be implemented on Oct. 1st, effectively killing the small business owner, ending his American dream. Yet, big businesses are being exempt from enrolling. This is what Ted Cruz and many other US Senators are ghting for, fairness.

Fairness is what is needed. The question is constantly raised, If this law is so great, why isnt Congress and their staffers, and the President and his family and staffers enrolled into it? Fairness is what Speaker Boehner is calling for; Harry Reid is rejecting it, keeping himself in rst-class healthcare while sticking Americans in baggage. Why do big businesses not have to enroll, but the American people must? Again, fairness is what the Republican Party is calling for in the House, allow Americans to choose not to enroll, delay it for a year and have a national discussion on healthcare. The law was passed within a few days, and then Speaker Pelosi famously said that, we need to pass it to nd out whats in it! Were now seeing whats in it and its frightening. If Congress cannot pay it bills, do really want it pay for your medical bills? True reform is what is needed, and this can only be achieved by getting rid of this law and going to the table and having a national debate. Healthcare reform is not something that should be risking a government shutdown, both sides need to see that the American people are not happy with this law, that its killing small business owners and their prospects of growing, and when the heads of the Unions are standing against democrats policies it is obvious that this is a failed piece of legislation. Delay the law, allow a special committee of both House and Senate members from both parties meet with representation

from the White House and hash out true reform and a solid piece of legislation that will not only benet our economy, but also those who do not have health insurance. Take into account the leaders of our nations top hospitals such as the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic, top healthcare providers and insurance companies. To come together with a bill to reform our healthcare and make it number one, and keep our small businesses growing. This would not be an easy task by any means, but that is why we elect these men and women, to ght for us, to compromise and improve our nation, not harm it. This nation has survived for over 200 years, seeing how we are falling apart because of petty political parties instead of truly looking after our citizens is an issue we need to x. If our party leaders can come together over this issue, repeal Obamacare and start down the road for truly xing our nations healthcare, taking care of our debt and paying our bills, we can become an even better nation and true example to other nations. This is just the simple rants of a young conservative, but something I felt needed to be said over the entire issue of Obamacare and a looming government shutdown.
