According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the earliest historical meaning of the word
information in English was the act of informing, or giving form or shape to the mind, as in
education, instruction

Information is a quality of a message from a sender to one or more receivers. Information is

always about something (size of a parameter, occurrence of an event, value, ethics, etc). Viewed
in this manner, information does not have to be accurate; it may be a truth or a lie, or just the
sound of a falling tree. Even a disruptive noise used to inhibit the flow of communication and
create misunderstanding would in this view be a form of information. However, generally
speaking, if the amount of information in the received message increases, the message is more
accurate.

The concept of an "integrated whole" can also be stated in terms of a system embodying a set
of relationships which are differentiated from relationships of the set to other elements, and
from relationships between an element of the set and elements not a part of the relational
regime.

INFORMATION SYSTEM:

In a general sense, the term information system (IS) refers to a system of persons, data
records and activities that process the data and information in an organization, and it includes
the organization's manual and automated processes. In a narrow sense, the term information
system (or computer-based information system) refers to the specific application software
that is used to store data records in a computer system and automates some of the
information-processing activities of the organization. Computer-based information systems
are in the field of information technology. The discipline of Business process modeling

The term information system (IS) sometimes refers to a system of persons, data records and
activities that process the data and information in an organization, and it includes the
organization's manual and automated processes. ...

I.S is an organized collection, storage and presentation system of data and other knowledge
for decision making, progress reporting, and for planning and evaluation of programs. It can
be either manual or computerized, or a combination of both.

Information systems are those systems that allow managers to make decisions for the
successful operation] of businesses. Management information systems consist of computer
resources, people, and procedures used in the modern business enterprise. MIS also refers to
the organization that develops and maintains most or all of the computer systems in the
enterprise so the managers can make decisions. The goal of the MIS organization is to deliver
information systems to the various levels of corporate managers. MIS professionals create
.and support the computer system throughout the company

An information system (IS) is a subset of the overall internal controls of a business covering
the application of people, documents, technologies, and procedures by management
accountants to solving business problems such as costing a product, service or a business-
wide strategy. Management information systems are distinct from regular information
systems in that they are used to analyze other information systems applied in operational
activities in the organization. Academically, the term is commonly used to refer to the group
of information management methods tied to the automation or support of human decision
making, e.g. Decision Support Systems, Expert systems, and Executive information systems.

INFORMATION SYSTEM IN ORGANIZATION:

The emerging organizational paradigm involves complementary changes in multiple
dimensions. The revolution in information systems merits special attention as both cause and
effect of the organizational transformation. This can be illustrated by considering two key
variables: location of information and location of decision rights in organizations. Depending
on the costs of information transmission and processing, either the "MIS solution" of
transferring information or the "organizational redesign solution" of moving decision rights
can be an effective approach toward achieving the necessary collocation of information and
decision rights. When information systems change radically, one cannot expect the optimal
organizational structure to be unaffected. Considering the interplay among information,
incentives, and decision rights in a unified fashion leads to new insights and better
organizational planning.

recourses MIS is also collecting information from data bases of external data and data bases
of internal data. After taking all the information Human resource MIS send information to
benefit reports, salary surveys, scheduling reports, training test scores, job applicant profile
and needs and planning reports. As well as send data towards human resources application

technology department of every organization. In management information system a main
computer in connected with the other computers through hardware and software and this
main computer is called as Server. Server is directly and indirectly connected with all the
computers so the information flow is very fast in the information technology department.
Information flow helps the organization in quick way. Information System is now become the
need of any organization. Organization may be production or service. Universities have the

:ROLL OF M.I.S IN PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT

:Explanation

In The above flow chart of production department we can see that manager receives the
information about the raw material and then send it to the CNC m/c setting for first turning
operation this department sends that information to prototype production and this department
give the information to the inspection. If there is some problem in the raw material then that
department sent the information to the change process parameters department and it sent back
to CNC m/c setting for first turning operation. Information systems helps us to check the
quality of raw material whether it is good or not. After this inspection information is send to

SUPERIOR UNIVERSITY RAIWIND ROAD LAHORE

MANA GEM ENT INF ORMA TION S YSTEM
the batch production for 1st process and then the information goes to in-process inspection and
then this information goes to the CNC M/c setting for second operation this information goes
to the batch production for second operation and then sent to in-process inspection

After all that procedure this information is telling us that the raw material is converted into
the finish good and this is ready for sale. Finished goods are now sent through transports.
Through Information system we can know that all the parts are clean or not. After checking
all the goods information system take the final decision of its final check the quality of goods.
Then Information system is collected information about the packaging / packing of goods and
sends information to the storage department after all that procedure the information finally
goes for delivery for those product

:Role of MIS in Sales Department

1. In above flow diagram of sales department we can see that information is provided by
the supplier to the manufacturer in the form of raw material. RTA manufacturer
processed on the goods and make them into finished goods. And this department gives
information to the retailer and the retailers finally provide information and sold the
goods to the consumers through the sales process.

2. In case of defective products goods , customer return the products to retailer because
retailer gave the warranty of that product to the customer that is why retailer take
defective goods by the customer and return back that defective goods to the RTA
manufacturer. And manufacture replaces that items and give directly to the customer.

:Role of MIS in R&D Department

:Role of MIS in Decision Making

:Explanation

In the above flowchart we can see that flow of information for decision making.
Information system is playing a vital vole in this decision making process. It helps the
management to collect right information about the planning implementing and
evaluating of the thoughts of the management. Information System after evaluating
the idea transfers information to the search department where information is collected
and here we can check the different available options for decision making. After this
information is send to the next department to the professional and personal
philosophers. These persons select the information and implement their decisions and
make their decision how can we evaluate and implement our thoughts into our

decision. Then Information system send information to the next department which
reflects on the outcome decisions of the management and then information is sent
back to the search department finally. We can see this process is impossible without
. the management information system
