Antony Manesh 30/8/2013 surveyor : Mr.janaka function 4b 1.grades of lub oil used in engine room. i really dint know but i had read in a book abt this so tried my luck .SAE 30 for m/e SAE 40 for A/E, SAE 50 for cyliinder lubrication. he asked what is SAE what do u understand by it . I said society of automotive engineers .it specifies the grade based on viscosity of oil sae 30 ha viscosity 9.3 t0 12.5 cst at 100deg celcius and sae40 12.5 to 16.3 and sae50 at 16.3 to 21.9 2)what are the properties of lub oil used for refrigerant? i answered low miscibility with refrigerant for high oil film thickness and reduced shaft seal leakage,high thermal ,oxidation,chemical stability and high viscosity index.he the asked me abt its grade here i got stuck .i said i dint know.he further scewd me abt various grades of oil such as steering gear etc .i got really fucked her bcoz just at that time mr.chowdry enterd the room.and he saw me sitting dumb unable to answer .i said to myself this is my fifth attempt and will be my last attempt. 3) next he moved on to auxillary engine.i considered my self strong in it.he asked things like tappet clearance,what is tappet and the he asked abt decarb .whether u have done it.he asked me abt bottom end bearing clearance .how will u take it. while assembly and disaasembly what is the safety to be followed. ididnt know the answer exactly so i explained about the disassembly tool used in yanmar and it serves as a guide for the bearing bottom half .he didnt say anything and moved on to next question 4)how the con rod bolts tightened. they are tightened by angular tightening method.my engine had four bolts.they are first tightened to the the required seating torque 49nNm by torque wrench.the opposite bolts are tightened in two steps to the required angle(78 deg) 5)then he moved on to main engine. material of exhaust valve- valve spindle is made of nimonic aand valve seat is made of molbdenum steel coated with stellite 6)what is the type of contact between exhaust valve and seat.i said point contact.he then asked why .i just took a minute here and thought if ur going to bullshit, bullshit something relevant. so i just guessed in case of surface contact ,the area available for carbon and other elements like vanadium and sodium to deposit is large and hence it may lead to corrosion and erosion.another thing is that in case of surface contact the force that need to be exerted on vanes for it to rotate will be large and more wear could take place between valve and seat.he seemed satisfied 7)how will u overhaul exhaust valve and and seat.pls dont say cleaning buffing or anything abt o rings BY using a maker supplied template we can find out whether the wear on the valve and seat are with in permissible limits.do we use the same template for valve and seat? no seperate ones.what to do if wear is more than permissible limits?grind the valves on exhaust valve grinding machine by setting correct angle in the grinding head 8)what is the stern tube luboil pr? i said its around 1.8 to 2 bar.he then as whats the criteria for it. the pressure inside the stern tube must be maintained same as that of surrounding sea water pr.

what does the sea water pressure depend on?i had no clue.thought it could be the draft of the vessel.and i said it.next he asked what happen when draft increases i said the seawater pr increases. result . mr chowdry broke to me the good news that i ve cleared my class 4.a stress that was eating me alive for past 6 months is now finally relieved. thanks to GOD and all the friends of this community who helped all way.thanks for reading my post and pls do post you oral questions here.ALL THE BEST GUYS..................
