Design Methodology
The piping classes were developed to provide piping material specifications for the following CSA cold flange rated pressure classes: PN 20, PN 50, PN 100, PN 150, PN 250. For each pressure class, pipe
wall thicknesses were then calculated using the equation provided in CSA Z662-07 Clause 4.3.5.1. A

joint

factor of 1.00 corresponding to seamless and electric welded pipes, location factor of 0.625 corresponding to Class 1/ocation and Station application, temperature factor or 1.00 corresponding to temperatures below 120C, and a specified design factor of 0.8 were used throughout this specification in the determination of the wall thickness.
CSA pipe grades chosen are reflective of material availability, cost and delivery.

1.4.1

Design and Operating Conditions

For definitions of design and operating conditions see Colt Pieing De, and Layout Specification GS903-01.
A service will be designated as sour if the design conditions match or exceed the criteria as set out in CSA Z662-07 Clause 16.2 or applicable

1.4.2

provincial governing body.

1.4.3

If a service is designated as sour, the systems must be designed in

accordance with all the requirements defined in CSA Z662 Section 16, latest edition. Refer to Talisman Sour Service Spec ES1.A408 for additional
sour service requirements.

1.4.4

All piping systems including supports shall have a MDMT (Minimum Design Metal Temperature). The MDMT is defined as the minimum metal design temperature at which components are subjected to internal or external pressures or stresses. All required Cat II piping materials shall be impact tested according to CSA Z662 Cat Ii (_45C) requirement.

1.5
1.5.1

Materials Identification
All materials not covered by the piping material specifications shall be
clearly identified with an identification number on the P&ID's, the piping drawings and the isometrics. All items with an identification number shall be recorded on a specialty item (SP) list as a part of the drawing package. The identification number shall be permanently attached to the item with a stainless steel tag or nameplate.

1.5.2

All valves and piping components shall bear tlie normal identification markings as required by CSA, ANSI, ASME, ASTM, MSS or other applicable standards and specifications.
shall provide the heat number for the QC package for all materials supplied

1.5.3 CE-Franklin shall hold mill test reports on behalf of Talisman-Energy and

to Talisman-Energy by CE-Franklin. All materials purchased from suppliers

other than CE Franklin shall be supplied with the mill test reports for the

QC package.
1.5.4
Each individual length of pipe shall, as a minimum, be marked with the applicable CSA grade or ASTM standard and wall thickness: i.e. CSA GR241 SCH8D. These markings shall be applied continuously throughout

each full length of pipe.

1.5.5 1.5.6
All markings on stainless steel and alloy piping shall be free of chlorides and metals.
Wall Thickness Calculations and Corrosion Allowance

Wall thickness calculations are based on CSA Z662-07 and Alberta Regulation AR 9112005 (Clause 16) where design stress levels may not exceed 50% SMYS for all sour above ground piping.

A computerized calculation sheet for determining wall thicknesses is

available on the Mechanical Engineering Computer Network and Talisman SharePoint Site.

Tiie corrosion allowance to be used is specified in the individual line

classes.

1.5.7

Pressure and temperature limits indicated in the individual Line Classes are based on the lesser of the maximum allowable flange rating as per CSA Z245.12 or ASME 816.5 for the particular material group. All piping component wall thicknesses specified in each Line Class are based on the

lesser of either the allowable flange pressure rating or the allowable stress
of the piping component found within the temperature limits of the Line Class. Allowance has been made for the stated corrosion allowance, depth of any threads, and manufacturer's mill tolerance.

1.5.8

Piping component wall thicknesses do not include any additional thickness

that may be required to compensate for such design considerations as

thermal loads, live loads, hydraulic shocks, or loads and forces from other causes, all of which must be given consideration when designing piping

systems.
1.5.9
Unless otherwise specified, all pressures specified in the individual Line

Class are positive pressure. All piping subjected to a negative pressure shall be investigated on an individual basis since the engineering design specified in the applicable Line Class mayor may not be suitable.
1.5.1 D

All CSA Material shall be low temperature (-45C) category II materiaL.

All A35D-LF2 forgings shall be CLASS 1.

Ultrasonic testing shall be conducted on welds that can not be radiographically examined at Owner's option. Acceptance criteria shall be as per the applicable Codes and Standards.
Charpy Testing Impact testing shall be in accordance with CSA l662.
Hardness Testing
o If micro hardness testing is required it shall be performed in accordance with the

requirements of ASTM E384.

o All welding procedure specifications/welding procedure qualification records

(WPS/PQR's) shall contain hardness test results.

o PQR hardness testing shall be carried out by the Vickers Microhardness test method.
o Acceptance criteria for Vickers hardness testing shall be per CSA.

o Hardness testing shall be carried out on a sample cross section and shall include three readings each in the HAl, weld, and base material, at 0.25t from each surface and at
D.5t.

1.19.5

Pressure testing of piping shall be 1.5 times the MOP for each line class.
CSA Z662-07 Clause 8.6 stipulates that "where practical," pipe spools should be tested to produce the same hoop stresses as would be produced in the absence of erosion and corrosion allowances; this would result in hydro test pressures in excess of 1.5 times the cold rated flange pressure therefore creating hoop stresses in excess of 75% of SMYS of the material.

It was deemed impractical in facility piping to resolve the above issue by

derating the operating pressures or changing flanges for this reason 1.5 times the MOP will be used as the test pressure.

1.20
1.20.1

Pipe Supports
Welded shoes can only be used when the calculated hoop stress is less than 50% of the SMYS of the materiaL.

Notes Referenced in Line Classes

PWHT per Code. Weld procedure qualification (WPS), with supporting procedure qualification record (PQR), to be qualified by impact testing as required by relevant Code (ASME B31.3 or CSA Z662). All welds in vibrating service shall be stress relieved.
Design pressure for pipe made to a standard or specification other than recommended in CSA Z662-07 shall not exceed the pressure corresponding to 72% of SMYS of the pipe (Clause

2.

4.3.5.4).
3.

Bore to match pipe.

Specify olets as branch schedule and size by header size. Refer to Branch Connection Chart #1. Use Branch Connection Chart #2 for Sour Vibration Service.
Small bore flanged valve shall be used for instrument connections, vents and drains only.
Install in horizontal position with cover up only.

4.
5.

6. 7.
8.

Install in horizontal position with cover up or vertically with flow upwards only.

In horizontallnes, split-disc wafer type check valves shall be installed with the shaft in the
vertical position.

9.

For Valve material description and purchase details refer to Section 3 of Talisman ASME Piping Material Specification IBU-TLM-SPEC-EM-003.

10.

Contractor or Vendor's welding procedure qualification (WPS), with supporting procedure qualification records (POR), shall ensure that weld hardness does not exceed 22 HRC. The location and number of hardness impressions shall be as specified in the referenced code for sour service applications and shall include the weld root, heat-affected zone (HAZ), weld cap and parent metal. Hardness readings shall be documented and records submitted to Talisman (TLM). All welds in vibrating service shall be stress relieved.

11. Threaded fittings shall not be used on main process piping in sour service applications. Threaded fittings may be used on branches which have been isolated from the main header with a flanged valve or as approved by the responsible engineer. Where threaded forged fittngs are specified, pressure ratings shall be as outlined in ASME B16.11

12. Socket-welded valves shall be used in sour service applications. Combination-end valves (SW x NPT) may be used for vents, drains and instrument connections only.
