DLMS/COSEM Solutions for Advanced Metering Infrastructure

Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) has been growing at a fast clip in the recent past, and the number of smart meters deployed worldwide is expected to reach 963 million units by 2020 according to forecast by Pike Research. Across the world, choosing a physical transport medium is region-specific, while metering protocol choices in Europe is DLMS/ COSEM. Additionally, an increase in the number of smart meters has made vendors to look for alternatives instead of connecting the meters directly connect with the head end. A hierarchical network infrastructure wherein smart meters connect to the metering head end via a Data Concentrator is becoming a more cost effective solution. Aricents DLMS/ COSEM solutions are designed to help OEMs deliver high quality and differentiated solutions for the AMI market.
AMI networks have started gaining traction across the world, with utilities rapidly embracing smart grid technologies spurred by multiple factors such as the need to optimize the load on the grid, incentives from the regulatory bodies, the need to improve operational efficiencies, etc. The metering protocol is the essential glue that helps enable these benefitsright across the infrastructurefrom the smart meter, to the data concentrator, through to the head end. DLMS/COSEM enables rich functionality for all AMI needs

DLMS/COSEM CLIENT STACK

Aricent has developed a feature-rich protocol stack for the DLMS/ COSEM client. The DLMS/COSEM client can sit at either the Data Concentrator or at the head end, and connects with the DLMS/ COSEM server at the smart meters. The protocol itself can be transported over different types of physical layers such as Power Line Communications (PLC), IP, HDLC, or wireless networks (including mesh or 2G/3G networks). We have worked with Texas Instruments to enable and optimize our protocol stack on the TI Data Concentrator platform. The platform is designed to enable complete Data Concentrator functionality on PLC networks based on PRIME and G3 interfaces.

Key features available as a part of the DLMS/COSEM client include: > Support of LN services (GET, SET, ACTION) > Support of SN services (READ, WRITE, UNCONFIRMEDWRITE) > Support of various DLMS COSEM interface classes and objects > Event notification request support > Low- and high-level security and encryption support > Support for confirmed/unconfirmed services classifications > Sample application > Peer meter simulator

Major applications supported by the DCAF include: Meter Administrator: Meter registration, power control, clock synchronization remote firmware update, etc. Remote Tariff Programming: Loading meter with tariff information Meter Read: Ondemand as well as periodic reading of meters connected to the DC Remote Connect/Disconnect: Remote control of connection/ disconnection of the premises based on grid conditions Alarm Management: Management of outages and abnormal events on meters, potentially requiring raising of SNMP trap into the Outage Management System

DATA CONCENTRATOR APPLICATION FRAMEWORK

Aricent has also developed a Data Concentrator Application Framework (DCAF) that makes it simple for OEMs to create applications on the Data Concentrator. The framework provides a simple Web-services-based interface layer that exposes most common functions such as meter administration, remote tariff programming, fraud detection, etc. The framework has been designed in a platformand protocol-agnostic manner, can be used on both DLMS/COSEM and other protocols, and can integrate with both Aricent and 3rd-party DLMS/COSEM client stacks.
