Annotated Bibliography Primary Sources

Applebaum, Anne. Gulag: A History. New York: Doubleday, 2003. Print. (13) This source was my largest source for information on gulags. It contained a wide variety of information, from prisoner accounts, to guard testimonies, and even pictures of the gulags. This was a comprehensive collection of primary documents that has assisted me greatly in my project. It also provided excellent statements from different points of views from gulag guards, to prisoners and even outsiders who observed the event.

Gottfried, Ted, and Melanie Reim. The Stalinist Empire. Brookfield, CT: Twenty-First Century, 2002. Print.(7 There were some excellent pictures of propaganda about Stalin that was created to fool and mesmerize the masses into believing that he was a god and he was doing the right thing. This book was a insight into what the Russian/Soviet people were being fed and told about Stalin during his rule. The documents in this book were authentic and many had notes and scribbles on them from the original owner/photographer.

Khrushchev, Nikita Sergeevich, Strobe Talbott, Edward Crankshaw, and Jerrold L. Schecter.Khrushchev Remembers. Boston: Little, Brown, 1970. Print.(27)

This book provided good information on the aftermath of Stalins reign. Khrushchev was the general secretary of the Communist party after Stalin lost office. This helped a lot with the effects paragraph because it showed what negative and positive repercussions Stalins reign had on Russia. The events of Stalins reign unfold from Khrushchevs point of view as a average Soviet Citizen at the time.

This book written by Kravchenko provides a first person account of the injustices that were done to the peasants by Stalin and his government. This book helped a lot with the Actions part of the paper because it discussed some of the economic changes, political violations and environmental dangers that happened to them

Marrin, Albert. Stalin. New York, N.Y., U.S.A.: Viking Kestrel, 1988. Print. (22) This book provided a lot of primary source evidence into the political and rights violation aspect of the Stalinist era. The stories from victims of the NKVD brutality and unreasonable laws were especially helpful. These eye witness and first person accounts give a good understanding of the discrimination and prejudice that went on during the Stalinist era.

McCarthy, Rose. Dictatorship: A Primary Source Analysis. New York: Rosen Pub. Group, 2005. Print. (17) Dictatorship by Rose McCarthy goes deep into detail about the conditions that allowed the Stalin to seize power, and what tactics he used to control the populace and make sure that his rule would be secure. This book provided solid insight into Stalin and how he became the ruler of the Soviet Union by using testimonies and statements by citizens under various dictators reigns to construct a solid explaination

Murdico, Suzanne J. Russia: A Primary Source Cultural Guide. New York: PowerPlus, 2005. Print. (12) This source provided me with excellent evidence on how Stalin restricted the freedom of artists and creators was restricted and how propaganda was produced that made him seem godlike. book showed me good pictures of posters and other media that depicted Stalin at a godlike status as well as how the common people felt about him.

Otfinoski, Steven. Joseph Stalin: Russia's Last Czar. Brookfield, CT: Millbrook, 1993. Print. (19) In Joseph Stalin: Russias Last Czar Otfinoski recounts Stalins rule with primary sources both from the normal citizens point of view only exposed to the propaganda fed to them, and from his own experiences with the horrible truth in which the secret police and gulags held fear over everyone.

Solzhenitsyn, Aleksandr. The Gulag Archipelago 1918-1956. New York: HarperCollins, 2002. Print.(24) This book provided an excellent first hand account of the Gulags from Solhenitsyn from his first person point of view. He tells the history and origins of the gulags and secret police, describing how they evolved. This book went deep into detail about the Gulags as well as Solzhenitsyn describing his own experiences.

Solzhenitsyn, Aleksandr Isaevich. The GULAG Archipelago Two: An Experiment in Literary Investigation. New York: Harper & Row, 1975. Print.(6) This book is a sequel to the first Gulag Archipelago and continues telling Solzhenitsyns amazing story where the last one left off. Like the last book this one gave me good insight into the horrors of the gulag which assisted me in writing the Actions part of my paper. Solzhenitsyns firsthand account of his time in the gulag is amazingly descriptive.

Suib, Stella. Inside Russia's SVR: The Foreign Intelligence Service. New York: Rosen Pub. Group, 2003. Print. (16) This book contains first hand accounts and documents from the height of the NKVD (Stalins Secret Police) and many of the operations that they completed for stalin. This book includes a comprehensive history all the way through NKVD history, from when they were signed into existence through their eliminations and all the terrible actions committed in-between

Trumbauer, Lisa, and Robert Asher. Russian Immigrants. New York: Facts On File, 2005. Print. (28)

This book showed the story of Russians immigrants during Stalins reign and how they were denied travel and freedoms which affected them majorly and how they longed to leave Russia. Many Russian immigrants were interviewed to tell their stories in this publication. This was a major part of my effects paragraph and was even better because it used primary sources.

Volkogonov, Dmitri Antonovich. Stalin: Triumph and Tragedy. New York: Grove Weidenfeld, 1991. Print. (5) Stalin, Triumph and Tragedy is a book that entails Stalins entire rule, from when he was an upstart member in the Bolshelvik party to his death as the Leader of the Soviet union. This book provided good primary source information about the means he went through to get the soviet union to the power that it is today. It revealed how the events unfolded through the eyes of Stalins political advisors, secret police, and subjects.

Zuehlke, Jeffrey. Joseph Stalin. Minneapolis: Lerner, 2006. Print.(9) This book contains eyewitness reports from news reporters covering the Terror Famines in the Soviet Union during Stalins 5 year plans. There is also a detailed breakdown of what the 5 year plans entailed. This was a normal book that had newspapers or excerpts from news reports describing the terrible things that were going on from foreign reporters points of view.\

This source provided good firsthand accounts from children who grew up during Stalins reign. They were adversely affected by his strict policies and had to survive what became a dangerous way of life. It talked about how lack of housing and food caused them to turn to crime and other distasteful activities just to survive.

Secondary Sources

Bullock, Alan. Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives. New York: Knopf, 1992. Print. (4) This reference book compared and contrasted Hitler and Stalins reigns against each other. It reveals how they ruled very similarly, using secret police, along with labor camps. They worked mercilessly towards their goal, with Stalins being bringing the Soviet Union to become an Industrial World Power.

Caulkins, Janet. Joseph Stalin. New York: F. Watts, 1990. Print.(1) This book was a general Biography about Stalin. It was an overview of his life which did provide really good information. It didnt really go in-depth to any specific events but was a good source for basic facts about how he gained power. This was the first source I examined and I found a lot of my standard information about Stalin from this source.

Cernak, Linda. Totalitarianism. Edina, MN: ABDO Pub., 2011. Print. (21) This book was a very good reference source. It contains a broad spectrum of information from totalitarian regimes with a very large section on Stalins rule. It goes in-depth to how Stalin used this regime to achieve his seemingly impossible goals and all the aspects included in Totalitarianism. The author also provides considerable commentary and analysis of several totalitarian rulers.

Dowswell, Paul. Dictatorship. Milwaukee, WI: World Almanac Library, 2006. Print. (18) This book about Dictatorship is a general description of what makes a dictatorship and how itt works. The book goes further into detail about dictatorships by relating it to Stalin and Hitlers rules. It talks about the various tactics that they use to control the population which provided valuable information for my report.

Fridell, Ron. Dictatorship. New York: Marshall Cavendish Benchmark, 2008. Print. (14)

This book was very interesting as it went into all the devices that dictators use such as restricting freedoms and terror tactics, and showed specific examples of how different dictators used them to rule. A large portion of this book was on Stalin and provided very detailed examples that were analyzed by the author. These aided me greatly when writing this report. Ingram, Scott. Joseph Stalin. San Diego: Blackbirch, 2002. Print.(11) This book was a simplified account of the Stalinist Era, it left out some of the more gruesome details but was still a good source of information. It contained good quotes from Stalin or his victims that went along well with the subject that the author was discussing.

Print.(10) This book provided a good overview of Stalins reign, it was a simplified version but left in the good facts, it provided me with information from both sides, the government and the peasants, Overall it was a good source that provided basic information that helped with all aspects of the paper.

This was an excellent source of information on the time before Stalins rule. It goes into depth about how Czar Nicholas II was an inferior ruler. It chronicles the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and more specifically an event forever known as Bloody Sunday. This showed me the significance of the event and how it allowed the Bolshelvik/Communist Party to gain power.

This source from the Salem press provided a good general overview of the Terror Famine that struck the Soviet Union. It gave a good perspective on how Stalin and his inflexible policies caused this terrible event and killed millions of people in the process. I also got many interesting statistics and figures from this article.

Kort, Michael. Russia. New York: Facts On File, 2004. Print.(25) This book provided a general overview of Russian History. Its section on Stalin was fairly large and provided me with good information the effects of Stalins rule. It helped me to understand the problems that his neglect for his citizens lives caused. This source helped me with the Actions part of my paper as well as the effects because it discussed all of the long term problems that Stalin caused.

(20) This book was a general overview of dictatorship and explained the conditions and processes necessary for a dictator to successfully overthrow a government and put themselves in power and it used Stalin as a prime example. I got good information about how Stalin came to power from this book which aided in the background paragraph.

McCollum, Sean. Joseph Stalin. New York: Franklin Watts, 2010. Print.(15) This book is another overview of Stalins life but goes into greater detail on the side of the peasants. It shows how he won them over when he was still vying for control of the party and how on the inside he viewed them as a dispensable source. This gave me greater insight into the cruelty of this man. Russia. Minneapolis: Lerner Publications, 1992. Print.(23) This book provided good information regarding the previous ruler of Russia Czar Nicholas II . I learned that he ruled badly which contributed to my paper by describing the circumstances that allowed the Bolshelviks to take power in a country that was formerly by a bad ruler.

Service, Robert. Stalin: A Biography. Cambridge, MA: Belknap of Harvard UP, 2005. Print(2) Stalin: A Biography gave me good information about Stalins terror tactics that he used against the Soviet People: these included his police, famines, and the gulags. I also learned about the power structure of these organizations through this book. As well as how Stalin easily betrayed them.

Tucker, Robert C., and Wodzimierz Brus. Stalinism: A Historical Interpretation. New York: W. W. Norton &, 1977. Print.(8) This book provided information on Stalins reign with the authors analysis and opinion on why and how this event happened. I got a good overview of Stalins entire reign and got a better idea

The article itself was covering the fact that even though Stalin committed many terrible crimes he is still remembered and definitely left a legacy. Gulag Musuem. "Gulag: Soviet Forced Labor Camps and the Struggle for Freedom."Gulaghistory.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Oct. 2013. This was an extremely comprehensive source on the gulag and provided several of my pictures. These pictures varied form prisoners working, to the layout of the camp, and even to Stalin surveying his camp. Another picture that I obtained from this site was one of several gulag prisoners going into a mine and mining out a mountain showing Stalins interest in taking the natural resources

"Imperialism in Australia, Chapter 1." Imperialism in Australia, Chapter 1. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Oct. 2013. This site was focusing on Australias role vs other countries in the world. It provided me with a very important graph that details the economic productions of countries during Stalins rule and shows how Russia pulled ahead

"The Karakalpaks under the Soviets." Karakalpak.com. Web. 04 Oct. 2013. This source gave me numerous good picture from collectivized farms. It was also a very interesting article because It gave perspectives from both sides: the government and the people. It showed how people reacted violently to the collectivization by killing their herds and breaking tools.

It displayed a large pile of dead bodies which was photographed after the corpses from the aftermath of the great famine were gathered. I felt that it effectively captured the horror of what went on and puts it into a more real feeling package. "Life in the Soviet Union." Create WebQuest. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Oct. 2013. This site was about reporters who were living in the Soviet Union for a month. There was general information about communism but what I got off that page was a picture or painting of Lenin "Lithuania Is Ravaged by Zio-bankers, and Now Their Government to Pay Billions in WW2 Reparations." The site itself was about how Stalins reign directly affected Lithuania but the picture was one of the best things on the site because it was a good show of the Secret police cruelty. From this site I got numerous primary documents in the form of propaganda made during Stalins rule. This site provided a good summary of all the atrocities that Stalin committed during his reign. But the main thing that I got from this site was a picture showing the famine and how badly it crippled his people.
