Welcome!Theworditselfconjuresupapleasantgreeting.
Welcome,themanbehindthatmoniker,istheepitomeofthat
gentlemanlygreetingHoustonstyle.
Thoughunassumingandrespectful,onesensesWelcomeissomebody
significantwhenhearrivesandwalksintoaroom.Infact,heevenarrived
beforehisnamedid!Bornathomein1928,heremainednamelessfor
22days,ashisfolks,E.E.JackandDoraWilson,arguedoveranappro-
priatemoniker.Finally,hisfathersaid,Letsmakehimfeelwelcome,
andhewaschristenedWelcomeWadeWilson.Neitherhenorthecity
hecametoloveandembracewouldeverbethesame.
MyfatherthoughtHoustonwasgoingtobethecenteroftheuniverse,
commentedWilson.Therewerehalfamillionpeople,itwasthelargest
cityinTexas,buthisvisionwasthatitHoustonwouldbecomeone
ofthegreatestcitiesoftheworld...Ihavenocomplaintsabouthisjudgment.
Today,WelcomeWilsonSr.ischairmanofWelcomeGroup,LLC,
afamilybusiness,whichownsover75facilitiestotalingmorethan
3.5millionsquarefeetofsingle-tenantindustrialandofficefacilities.
WelcomeSr.hasalsobeentheChiefExecutiveOfficerofrealestate
firms,havingdevelopedmorethan1,000apartmentunits,multiple
shoppingcenters,downtownofficebuildings,severalhotelsandmore
than8,000subdivisionlots.
However,longbeforehearrivedinHouston,Welcomesetthetonefor
histrailblazingapproachtolife,andtheworldofanentrepreneur.Asa
second-graderinCorpusChristi,hisfirstjobwasscrapingandstacking
platesintheschoolcafeteria.Theexperiencebecameasimplelife
lesson:Whenpeoplearewillingtodosomethingothersarenotwilling
todo,theyprosper,Welcomerecallslearning.
HeattendedTexasSouthmostCollege,andgraduatedwithanAssociate
ofArtsdegreein1946.Laterthatyear,heenrolledattheUniversityof
Houston.In1949,hewouldgraduatewithaBachelorofBusinessAdminis-
trationdegree.Regardinghistimeinschool,helikestoquip,Iwasin
schoolsolongagothat{atthetime}theDeadSeawasonlysick.
AnotherlifelessonwaslearnedwhenWelcomeandhisbrotherJack
firstarrivedattheUniversityofHoustonin1946.Theirfathertoldthem
totelephonehimaboutwhatevertheyneededhedthenexplainhow
theycoulddowithoutit!Hefeltlikeself-reliancewasthemostimportant
thinghecouldteachus,relatesWelcome.
WhileattendingUH,oneofhisthreefull-timejobswasasbusiness
managerforthestudentnewspaper.Hegotthepositionbecausehe
wentoutandsoldadvertising;infact,hesoldtheveryfirstadfor
The Daily Cougar.Wheremoststudentswouldavoidthislikethe
plague,Welcomewashappytodoit.Iwasalwaysanxioustodosome-
thingthatotherpeoplewerenotwillingtodo,hereflects.
Welcomesbeliefinadvertisingwouldremainwithhimtopresentday.
Hisfatherownedaradiostation.Ivebelievedinadvertisingsincethe
earliestoftimes.Myfatherscareerchoiceformewastobeintheadver-
tisingagencybusiness.Inmyview,advertisingsetAmericaaheadofthe
restoftheworldby2530yearsbecausepeoplecanreachoutandbring
inbusiness,hesays.
Formorethan65years,Welcomehasenjoyedacareerthathasbeenall
aboutmakingfriends.And,brother,hashemadealotoffriends!Theyre
asinfluentialastheycome.
HesalotlikeForrestGump,recountsoneofhismentees.Everypoint
inhislifehassomethingdifferentanditsallamazing.

Welcomehasalwaystriedtotakeadvantageofopportunitiespresented
tohim.Acaseinpointwaswhenhewasinchargeoftheplatformseating
arrangementsduringPresidentKennedysvisittoHoustonatRice
Stadium.Welcomeassignedhimselfaseatrightbehindthepodium,
sowheneverthecameraswouldseeJFK,theydalsoseeWelcome.
Shamelessself-aggrandizementhasalwaysbeenmypolicy.Itsonly
beeninrecentyearsthatIvebeenwillingtoadmitthat,hesayswith
atwinkleinhiseye.
OneofhisfriendswhohadastronginfluenceonWelcomewasalso
hisbusinesspartner,JackValenti.ValentiwasanalumnusofUHand,
inthoseearlyyears,apartnerintheHoustonadagencyofWeekley&
Valenti.Intime,Welcomewouldspearheadthenamingofthecommuni-
cationschoolatUHtobetheJackJ.ValentiSchoolofCommunication.
Throughthosesixdecadesofbuildingfriendships,Welcomehas
experiencedsomeratheruniqueandamazingopportunities.Highlights
include:HeservedintheEisenhowerandKennedyadministrations
asafive-stateDirectorofCivilandDefenseMobilization,adivision
oftheExecutiveOfficeofthePresident.
HealsohadresponsibilityforwhatisnowknownasFEMA.Welcome
wasawitnesstotheatombombtestsinNevadain1954andthehydrogen
bombtestatBikiniAtollinthePacificOceanin1956.
WelcomereceivedtheArthurS.FlemmingAward(establishedin1948to
honoroutstandingfederalemployeesandrecognizedbytheU.S.President)
asoneof TenOutstandingYoungMeninFederalServicein1958.
In1975Welcome,withhisbrotherJack,JackValenti,andothers,developed
JamaicaBeachandTikiIslandinGalveston.Theideawastocreatea
secondhomemarketforGalvestonvacationers.Itwasalearningexperi-
enceandcouldnothavebeenpossibleanywhereelseinthecountry,
saysWilson.
HereceivedtheUniversityofHoustonsDistinguishedAlumnusAwardin
1970,aswellastheUniversityofHoustonsC.T.BauerCollegeofBusiness
DistinguishedAlumnusAwardin1996.Hereceivedanhonorarydoctor-
atedegreeinMay2013.
