herself and her property
she enlisted a Realtor to
represent her. She added
that City officials told her
that they “weren’t going to
spend any money on it if it’s

Wright sworn in, mayor speaks out

A new Mt. Juliet city
judge was sworn in Monday,
but the mayor wasn’t happy
about how he got the job.
Andy Wright, who
also serves as city attorney
for Lebanon, was hired as Mt.
Juliet’s newest municipal
judge on Monday, July 6,
during a special called city
commission meeting which
Mt. Juliet Mayor Linda
Elam did not attend. At
the commission’s regularly
scheduled meeting Monday
night, July 13, Elam said
she was “disappointed in
the commission and the
city manager” in regards to

Robertson, however,
disagreed.
“I have absolutely
nothing to do with the
hiring or firing of the city
judge,” he retorted. “It is the
commission’s decision.”
He added that what
the mayor had “indicated

held on July 25 at Sgt. Jerry
Mundy Memorial Park in Mt.
Juliet.
All proceeds will
benefit the Graden Gaines
Scholarship Fund and
the medical funds of Karli
Costley, Makenzie Matthews
and Savannah Swandal, all
Mt. Juliet children battling
cancers of different sorts.
Karli is a happy and
active 3-year old whose world
changed in August 2008
when she was diagnosed
with retinoblastoma. She
and her family have traveled
to New York City for intra-
arterial chemotherapy,
which looks to have saved
her eye. Parents Kevin
and Amy Costley said the
little girl is “known to most
anyone who has seen her by
her big baby-blue eyes and
eyelashes that could sweep
the floor! How ironic it is
that the very thing about her
that would grab you deepest
in your soul is now the same
thing that is diseased and
threatening her life.”
Karli had an
unprecedented sixth chemo
treatment on January 21,
and this proved to be the
last one.
“At this point our
huge risk has paid off, and
we have been rewarded with
the news that her eye appears
free of all active cancer
cells,” announces Karli’s

that, but Karli is now seeing
with the eye that we almost
removed and were told she
would never see much with
again.”

BRITT, Brenda Anne
Brenda Britt passed away on July 12, 2009, at age
63. She was a B & B vendor at the Wilson County Fair
for 27 years. The family will be receiving friends at Sellars
Funeral Home in Lebanon on Wednesday, July 15, 2009
from 4-8 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until service.
The chapel service, conducted by Brother Danny Sellars, is
3 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 2009. Survivors include husband
of 30 years James “Bobby” Britt; children: Tony Waddell,
Angela Dove, Jeff Waddell, and Peggy Moulin; grandchildren:
April Collins, D.J. Thorp, Nigel Waddell, James Waddell,
and Tasha Moulin; five great-grandchildren; and good
friends: Tommy and Carla Kilburn. She is preceded in
death by sister Peggy Jo Crowder. In lieu of flowers, please

EAST, Nannie
Nannie East was born April 5, 1925,in Coeburn, VA.
She went home to be with her maker on July 11, 2009, after
an illness in the hospital. Her family was at her bedside.
Nannie spent many years in Warriormine, WV, serving her
community and cooking for Big Creek High School. Nannie
was always willing to help others and she loved to serve
her family and community. She enjoyed baking and cooking
for many organizations in her hometown. I am sure when
you mention her name she will be remembered for her rolls
and peanut butter cakes. Nannie really loved her job at
the school and when she got ready to retire after 40 years
of service, Big Creek dedicated the cafeteria in her honor.
She lived in WV for many
years with her husband,
William “Bill” East. They had
two daughters, Billie and
Dorothy. Billie married Coburn Kennedy and they have two
children. Dorothy married Boyd Rutherford. They also have
two children. Nannie moved to Mt. Juliet, TN with Billie and
her family where many loving memories were made. She
was a member of the Mt. Juliet Church of God. She is now
in Heaven with all its beauty where she will forever serve

major issue on July 4, when

“My son was all the
time telling me, ‘Momma,
you need to be careful about
that spot, that’s a bad spot,”

still get out and take care of

Graden Gaines Softball Tournament
July 25
The 2nd Annual Graden Gaines Foundation Softball Tournament
will be held on July 25 at Sgt. Jerry Mundy Memorial Park in Mt.
Juliet. The opening ceremony will be at 7:30 a.m., with the first
game at 8 a.m. and a championship game at the end of the day.
Adult co-ed teams have an entry fee of $300, and all proceeds
will benefit the Graden Gaines Scholarship Fund and the medical
funds of Karli Costley, Makenzie Matthews and Savannah

The Wilson Master Gardeners will be hosting their 1st Annual Garden Tour at the Wilson County Fairgrounds on Saturday, July 25. Participants can enjoy guided tours from 9 to
11 a.m.. The guided tour consists of 15 beds encompassing the fairgrounds itself as well as Fiddlers Grove and will be expected to take approximately an hour to complete.
Maps and plant lists will also be provided for self-guided tours. Starting at 11 a.m. there will be a canning/cooking demonstration at the Veterans Building in Fiddlers Grove
hosted by our own Marjorie Hoffman. Some of the beds in the tour include the following at the Fairgrounds: Native Bed, Knot Garden, Butterfly Bed, and Perennial of the Year
Bed. Most of the beds in Fiddlers Grove will be included all of which are period plantings. Also included in the tour will be a Rain Garden and the famous J. O’County
Gardener Demonstration and Gourd beds. Please share in our excitement of the progress made in our many gardens as well as our plans for the future. Admission is free.

Old Friend
What’s on Your Last Nerve?
If we all had a dollar for every time we overheard someone say, they are about to
get on my very last nerve, we’d all be rich, or at least richer. With that being the case,
what exactly does someone mean by getting on one’s very last nerve? It surely can’t be
a good thing from the sound of it? Another good question would be what is a last nerve?
Is it the point that someone storms off, tells you what’s on their mind or has had enough?
Well, I must be honest; I think we all know what getting on one’s very last nerve is? What
I’d like to do is encourage everyone to please not let anyone get on your last or even
your very first nerve.
Life is way too short to be agitated, aggravated or mad as a result of someone
else’s actions through aggravation, intimidation or rudeness. We all can do a better job
of controlling our anger, impatience and so called nerves. Just remember to not let
things get to you as easy or at all. Think about it, is letting someone that tailgates you in
traffic, cuts you off or refuses to dim their lights worth getting you upset and ruining your
day? I think not. If you have an encounter with someone rude, crude and disrespectful,
especially in a driving or traffic situation, the best thing to do is ignore them. Playing into
their game or letting them get to you only allows the agitator to win.
We’ve all probably been guilty of being on either side of this equation at one time
or another, but wouldn’t the world be a much better place if we all treated one another
at all times with respect and courtesy? I can’t imagine that trying would hurt in any way? I
could only see it as helping. As our parents always said, two wrongs don’t make a right.
If you have two people throwing hurtful remarks or actions at one another there’s sure to
be hurt feelings, aggravation and even trouble.
It’s sort of like arguing with your spouse and saying hurtful things during the
process. You would think that we would know better, but we just can’t seem to help
ourselves? Think about it, is there ever any good that comes from arguing, aggravating
or saying hurtful things? We know the answer, but most of us do it anyway only to regret
it later.
So if saying or doing hurtful things would bother you if the shoe were on the other
foot, then you have to know that it will probably not be taken in a positive manner by
anyone else as well?
In closing, don’t be the person that gets on one’s last nerve, be the person that
makes things better, not worse.
