PART B 1 (a) Sample Answer: Platelets clump together and produce thrombokinase / thromboplastin (1) Thrombokinase converts prothrombin to thrombin (calcium ions must be present) (1) Thrombin converts fibrinogen to fibrin (Vitamin K is needed in the formation of prothrombin) (1) Fibrin forms a network to traps the erythrocytes to forms a clot (1)

b) Diagram shows the blood circulatory system in organism S and organism T.

Based on Diagram 7.2:

SKEMA (i) Give one example of organism S and organism T. [2 marks] Organism S Fish Organism T Human being

(ii) Describes the similarities and differences between the blood circulatory system in organism S and organism T. [6 mark

Similarities 1- Both have a closed circulation 2- Both have a heart which acts as a pumping organ 3- Blood flows in blood vessels Differences Organism S 1. Single circulation 2. Heart divided into 2 chambers Organism T 1. Double circulation

2. Heart divided into 4 chambers

3. Chambers of heart are not separated by septum

3. Chambers of heart are separated by septum

4. Oxygenated blood flow from gills to the body cells/tissues

4. Oxygenated blood flows from lungs to heart

Question 2

3. Figure 3 shows the human circulatory system.

SKEMA

Figure 3

(a) Name circulations R and S. Describe each circulation. (i) R: Pulmonary circulation

Description: Oxygenated blood is pumped into the heart through the pulmonary vein. Deoxygenated blood from the heart is pumped to the lungs through pulmonary artery. (ii) S: Systemic circulation

Description: Blood is pumped throughout the body via aorta. Deoxygenated blood returns to the heart through vena cava. [6 marks] (b) On Figure 3, mark the following flow of blood to illustrate the circulations R and S. Oxygenated blood with the arrow ( Deoxygenated blood with the arrow ( ) ) [1 mark] (c) The pacemaker of a patients heart fails to function. An electronic pacemaker is used to replace the original pacemaker. Explain how the electronic pacemaker works.

SKEMA An electronic pacemaker will give the first heartbeat. It acts as sinoatrial node and generates impulse. The impulse is spread to all atrium muscle, then to the atrioventrical node until the whole heart beats. Question 3
No (a) Marking Criteria Able to name vertebra in region P and R and state their specific structure characteristic . Sample Answer : P: Name : cervicle (vertebrae) Characteristic : have (a pair of) transverse foramen R: Name : Lumbar (vertebrae) Characteristic : processes short /thick // large centrum (b) Able to explain the similarity. Sample answer : F1: both have several (bony spinous/ transverse) processes P1: for muscle attachment F2: both have facet / articulation surface P2: to articulate with next vertebrae F3: both have centrum P3: to absorb shock/ provide support F4: both have vertebral foramen P4: to provide passage of spinal cord Any F with correspond P c (i) Able to name structure S Answer : Intervertebral disc Able to explain the function of structure S Sample answer : F: permit movement of vertebral column P: absorb shock / reduce friction Able to give reason why eats plenty of dairy products is a good idea. Sample Answer : P: provide plenty of calcium (which help to reduce the effects of osteoporosis) Able to state two possible disadvantages of having a hip replacement. Sample answer : P1: it may cause the surrounding tissue to become inflamed P2: Painful P3: dislocation /blood clot P4: risk of infection after surgery P5: her legs may not be exactly the same length P6: the artificial hip will eventually need replacing Marks
