Key Facts About States Of Matter:

Fill in the blanks with the words in the box so that the statement makes sense.

molecules matter away state heat fast matter movement

The ____________ of ____________ depends on how ____________
molecules move.
Adding ____________ or taking it ____________ can change matter from
one state to another.
When ____________ changes state, it is really the ____________ of
____________ speeding up or slowing down.

GLOSSARY
Heat: It is made by friction, electricity and burning.
Conduction: when heat is transferred directly from one object to another
Radiation: when heat is transferred as heat waves through emptiness
Convection: when heat is transferred in a circle
Heat Transfer: When heat moves from a hot object to a cold object
Molecules: the building blocks of everything in the world
Matter: It is what makes everything in the world, and it is made of molecules. Matter has
different states which are called solid, liquid and gas. Matter changes into these states through
heating or cooling, and definitely through boiling or freezing. These two are extremes of heating
and cooling.

Solid: when something is hard and firm, like wood. Molecules dont move at all here.
Liquid: It is something that flows that you can pour, like juice. Molecules move slowly here.
Gas: It is something that will spread to fill any space, like air. Molecules move the fastest here.
Condensation: the process of gas turning into liquid
Evaporation: the process of liquid changing into gas
Melting: when a solid turns into a liquid
Freezing: when a liquid turns into a solid
Temperature: how hot or cold something is
Thermometer: the tool we use to measure temperature
