Course Description This is a course for students to develop specific language skills to communicate effectively in work-related contexts. Emphasis is placed on the importance of communicative aspects of conducting discussions and meetings. Students will also be taught to interact in discussions and to conduct meetings effectively according to correct meeting procedures. Syllabus Content 1. Understanding and applying language functions appropriate to discussions and meetings a. Starting and controlling a meeting/discussion b. Making suggestions/motions and amendments c. Teaching Methodology 1. The course focuses on the practical aspects of participating in discussions and meetings. Opportunities to practise the written and oral skills will be provided through activities which help to develop students ability to: - use language effectively, fluently and appropriately in discussions and meetings - write the necessary documents for meetings 2. Opportunities to acquire and practise the skills will be provided through: Viewing recordings of meetings to familiarize students with the language used in meetings Language practice activities role-play, simulation (e.g. opening meetings, making suggestions, presenting opinions, etc). Conducting mock meetings and videotaping them to enable structured feedback. Writing of minutes.
Agenda for meetings may include topics that are relevant to the respective faculties.
