1.1 To provide guidance, consistency and prompt evaluation by the physician and subsequent admission of emergent patient and to define which types of admissions are considered emergent. 2. DEFINITION: 2.1 Emergent surgical condition is defines as a surgical condition that manifests with acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) that may result in any of the following, if not immediately treated. 2.1.1 Places the patients health in jeopardy 2.1.2 Serious impairment to bodily functions 2.1.3 Serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part 2.1.4 Serous disfigurement of the member 2.1.5 An emergency behavioral health condition 3. POLICY 3.1 It is the policy of Gulf Diagnostic Center Hospital and its medical staff that all patients with emergent surgical condition are given priority in initial physician evaluation admission and management. 4. SCOPE 4.1 This policy applies to emergent/urgent surgical admission in Gulf Diagnostic Center Hospital. 5. RESPONSIBILITY 5.1 Emergency Room nurses 5.2 In-patient ward nurses 5.3 Treating physician 6. GUIDELINES: 6.1 Patients who are seen initially in a physicians clinic and need an emergent surgical admission as assessed by attending physician. 6.2 If patient is from attending physicians clinic, the patient will be transported to the Inpatient Ward by the clinic nurse. Receiving nursing unit gives immediate care. In cases when room is not available, patient is brought to Emergency Room. Once the room is

already available in the nursing unit, the patient can already be transferred by the Emergency Room nurse. 6.3 Patients who are hemodynamically unstable transferred from other hospital/health care facilities for further management are assessed at Emergency Room. 6.4 All patients with emergent surgical conditions are managed immediately upon arrival at Emergency Room. 6.5 Specific patient problems with the patient care nurse feel are emergent, should be treated as emergent. 7.
