Plans for a Moorestown park
scrapped. PAGE 3
SHANNON SADLER/The Moorestown Sun
Showing signs of wear and tear on Oct. 1, the David Gentile Skatepark in
Wesley Bishop Park will soon be demolished. Moorestown Recreation
Advisory Committee Director Theresa Miller said that a request for pro-
posals to demolish the park will soon be sent out by the township.
By SHANNON SADLER
The Moorestown Sun
Once serving as an outdoor
recreation facility for the youth of
Moorestown, the David Gentile
Skatepark at Wesley Bishop Park is
soon to be a thing of the past, with
the township about to send out a
bid for demolition of the park.
Closed permanently for about a
year now, Moorestown Director of
Recreation Theresa Miller said that
it had been closed several times for
maintenance in the past, before
closing down for good after falling
into a state of disrepair.
Its a wooden structure and its
outlived its shelf life, Miller said.
However, Miller acknowledges
that kids sneaking into the park are
still an ongoing issue, citing that
she has, on several instances with-
in the last year, asked kids to leave
the park.
Miller said there is currently no
expected start date to the demoli-
tion and a bond was approved for
the project to go out to bid.
Its become unsafe, Mayor
Stacey Jordan said.

Dog park plans fall by wayside
Township will not move forward with proposed
park due to lack of funding, suitable location
By SHANNON SADLER
The Moorestown Sun
Almost seven months after a
dog park in Moorestown was ini-
tially proposed, Moorestown Boy
Scout Troop member John
Matthews submitted a statement
that the township has decided not
to move forward with the project
due to a lack of funds and a suit-
able location.
Matthews had proposed the
park as part of an Eagle Scout
project in early February to both
the Recreation Advisory Commit-
tee and the town council and had
since worked with the township
to see the project come to fruition.
We worked very closely with
him, Moorestown Director of
Recreation Theresa Miller said.
Miller explained that those in-
volved included township manag-
er Scott Carew, the Moorestown
police department and the depart-
ment of community develop-
ment.
The proposal came before the
Recreation Advisory Committee
on Feb. 5, later being approved by
the town council on Feb. 18.
We had a significant amount
of resources that we used to help
John do the project, Miller said.
We looked at as many sites as
possibilities in the town.
Of those locations considered
by the township were Pryor Park,
Wigmore Acres, Locust Park and
Wesley Bishop Park. Miller also
explained that the township met
with Toll Brothers for a possible
location.
Depending on the needs of
each specific location, Miller said
the township reached out to re-
sources such as the Burlington
County planning board engineer
for permit information and the
police department for reports on
how the park would affect traffic
in the area.
A lot of the infrastructure on
the new sites becomes very cost-
ly, Miller said.
To construct the park from the
ground up, Miller explained that
everything, including parking
permits, trash receptacles, ADA
compliancy structures, landscap-
ing, fencing and benches, would
be needed to facilitate the park,
not including the yearly mainte-

nance fees and supervision of the
park.
Basically, the town wasnt pre-
pared to take on the cost of main-
tenance, Miller said.
In addition, residents located
close to Pryor Park voiced con-
cerns about the dog park, being
that it would be too close to their
houses and too close to children
playing.
We really tried to help and
bring this along, Miller said.
She added that the town and
the recreation advisory commit-
tee had met with Matthews on
several occasions to discuss the
logistics.
I sincerely appreciate the of-
fers of support, both monetary
and otherwise, that I received
from so many people in
Moorestown, Matthews wrote in
an emailed statement. I am dis-
appointed that we werent suc-
cessful in adding a dog park to
Moorestowns recreational facili-
ties.
During Matthews initial pro-
posal to council, he said the park
would help to curtail the number
of residents who walk their dogs
off-leash in recreational fields to
help provide a safer environment
for the dogs and to preserve the
fields.
Matthews originally estimated
that the park would cost between
$10,000 to $15,000 to complete, but
did not include materials and
labor for fencing, which he hoped
could be donated by contractors.

Geriatric care planning and support are
being offered to seniors in Moorestown and
their caregivers by Senior Citizens United
Community Services of Audubon, accord-
ing to CEO Stephen Considine.
Considine said the program is designed
to enhance the quality of life for seniors,
encourage their independence and provide
a safe, supportive living environment by of-
fering experienced care managers who will
evaluate a seniors needs and create a care
plan to meet those needs, assist in coordi-
nating services and monitor care deliver, if
needed. Benefit and budget counseling is
also available.
As a non-profit agency serving area sen-
iors since 1979, SCUCS is well aware of the
need for an affordable comprehensive care
planning service, said Susan Romano,
SCUCS executive director and supervisor
of the program. The service is available to
assist seniors in Camden, Burlington and
Gloucester counties. She noted that seniors
and their caregivers are often over-
whelmed and confused by the various op-
tions and programs that can help a senior
retain their independence.
The SCUCS program offers a home as-
sessment that includes a physical and psy-
chosocial evaluation, a financial review to
determine eligibility for county/state sup-
portive services and/or ability to pay for
private services. A home safety evaluation
is also conducted.
Based upon the findings, a care plan is
developed for each client, Romano said.
Follow up services, such as budget coun-
seling and assistance with entitlements,
care plan coordination and implementa-
tion and monthly case management are
also available. SCUCS has significant expe-
rience in the area of case management,
providing this service to hundreds of glob-
al options participants in the past few
years under a contract with Medicaid.
For more information or to schedule a
free initial consultation, contact SCUCS at
456-1121 and ask for the Geriatric Care
Management Program.
ELECTION LETTERS

be the last edition before elections to
print these letters.
Geriatric care planning and support offered for local seniors
V
ote them out office all of
them. That seems like an ap-
propriate response to the fed-
eral government shutdown that began
the first day of October and, as of this
writing, was still in effect.
Its pathetic. It truly is. We the peo-
ple of the United States of America
voted these people into Congress to
represent our best interests. But in the
name of their political party, and not
in the name of those who they repre-
sent, they have failed to reach agree-
ments to balance the nations budget
and decided to shut down.
As a result, more than 2 million fed-
eral workers will see their paychecks
delayed, and its possible that 800,000 of
those people might never get repaid.
That is because, of course, as is typical
with our government, the politicians
arent affected by their own decisions,
while those whom they represent
must bear the brunt of it all.
A government shutdown in reali-
ty isnt a complete closing of doors. By
law, certain agencies must operate
with unsalaried employees. That in-
cludes agencies that deal with nation-
al security and also those that manage
benefits such as Social Security pay-
ments. So, in effect, these people are
forced to work, with no pay, just be-
cause the politicians whom they chose
to represent them are deciding to play
party politics instead of coming to an
agreement for the good of the people.
This is just one example of how the
shutdown affects these politicians
constituents. The longer it drags on,
the worse it will get. Veterans may not
receive benefits. The Centers for Dis-
ease Control and Prevention will halt
its flu program, right as flu season be-
gins. Small business financing could
be seriously damaged. And the list
goes on.
Politicians nowadays dont seem to
care about whats good for the people.
They only care about their own party
line whether it be Republican, Demo-
crat, Tea Party or otherwise. Thats
sad, and it negatively affects all of us.
So the only response we, as citizens,
can make is to vote them out of office.
Bring in new people who care about
the people they represent and not the
party to which they belong. Bring in
new people with new ideas who want
change and welcome compromise.
This partisan political culture we
live in needs to stop.
Partisan politics at its worst
The government shutdown is a disgrace

This summer, the Moorestown
Tree Planting and Preservation
Committee, with the help of
many volunteers, completed the
Tree Inventory. The data from the
Inventory is used to track the
health and placement of our
street trees and is an important
part of our Tree Management
Plan.
Next, they began a Tree Prun-
ing Project, which they tested last
summer on Main Street. Again
using volunteers, each Thursday
morning (weather permitting,
through October) they go to areas
of town identified by the Commit-
tee and trim low-hanging branch-
es to improve the health of the
street trees and the appearance of
the neighborhood. The trimmed
branches are left by the curb to be
picked up by Public Works on the
next brush pick up date. The
areas are selected and done with
the brush pick up calendar in
mind to ensure brush is not left in
an area for too long.
So if you see a group of people
trimming your neighborhood
street trees, or placing the
branches by the curb, wave and
say thank you! These are your
neighbors, improving your neigh-
borhood.
If youd like to help with the
Tree Pruning Project, contact the
Committee at moorestown-
trees@gmail.com.
