Marines and Corpsmen,

As we enter the final quarter of 2013, Id like to remind you that the Department meeting will be held at Paul E. Boyd Detachment on 05 October 2013. Breakfast will be served at 0800 hrs and the meeting will begin at 0900 hrs. After the Department meeting, if time permits, we will have our Department Devil Dog meeting. If not, we will eat lunch first and then hold the meeting.

P.E.B. SPONSORED BINGO Every Thursday 10:30am To 2:30 pm Lions Bingo Hall 7401 Airline Drive Metairie, LA We need HELP in all areas of the bingo. This is a good source for information and camaraderie. So come by, lend a hand and keep abreast of things. Bingo proceeds support most of the PEB Hall expenses.

On Saturday, September 21, the Devil Dogs held a social. In spite of the rain and previous obligations of some members, twenty-five people were treated to a delicious pork roast dinner which included twice baked potatoes and cheese broccoli. Dessert was a selection of cherry, apple and peach cobblers. Good music and conversation was shared by all. Pat Ligon presented each person with homemade white chocolate in the shape of an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor medallion.

Your Marine Corps League needs YOU to bring in a new member. Please consider inviting a Marine to join us here at Paul E. Boyd Detachment.

Chaplains Corner
It is my sad duty to report to you that one of our long time members and former Detachment Commandant has answered the call of the Supreme Commandant to report to his final duty station. On Sept. 5, 2013, Mr. Lenox "Lenny" Siess Jr., age 88, passed away peacefully at The St. Joseph Hospice in Kenner. During his short hospice stay he had several cordial visits with old friends who reported that he was upbeat and content. Mr. Siess was a WWll veteran who fought the Pacific campaigns, including Iwo Jima, with the Fourth Marine Division. His memorial service, including our wake service, was held on Sept.14,2013, to which we turned out 35 members and auxiliary members. Mr. Siess will be sadly missed. No sooner had we completed Mr. Siess's service when I was notified that another member, Mr. James "Pat" W. Patterson, a Korean War veteran, had passed away on Sept. 12, 2013. His funeral was held on Sept. 16, 2013 and in spite of the short notice we turned out 15 members and auxiliary members for our wake service. I would like to thank everyone who attended one or both of these services as it shows that our members are truly "Always Faithful". Please join me in asking: Lord, please receive the souls of these two old Marines into your loving arms, judge them kindly and allow them to dwell forever in that part of Your house that You have reserved for Your righteous warriors, Amen. Thought For The Day "Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you. 1) Jesus Christ 2) The American G. I. One died to save your soul, the second to save your freedom." -Arthur unknown Semper Fi, Don LeCourt, Chaplain

This Month in Marine Corps History October 1917: The 8th Marines was activated at Quantico, Virginia. Although the regiment would not see combat in Europe during World War I, the officers and enlisted men of the 8th Marines participated in operations against dissidents in Haiti for over five years during the 1920s. During World War II, the regiment was assigned to the 2d Marine Division and participated in combat operations on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa, and earned three Presidential Unit Citations. November 1950: In a carefully planned assault, eight Chinese Communist divisions in Korea launched a massive attack which had as its expressed purpose, the destruction of the 1st Marine Division. This action led to the successful southward Marine Corps attack out of the Changjin (Chosin) Reservoir December 1995: In Bosnia, 22 Marines from Marine Corps Security Force Company, Naples, Italy were among the first American troops to arrive. They provided the security for Allied Forces Southern Europe headquartered at Sarajevo.
