FIGURE 1

INTRODUCTION
The Brush Lifting device is a system that operates after a wound rotor motor completes the starting period in order to provide the rotor short circuit with no current flowing from the slip ring collector to the brushes. The system consists of a dual action motorized mechanism that works connected and in sequence one to the other, as follows ( see fig. 1 ) : Group "A" - Mechanism for short-circuiting the rotor winding Group "B" - Mechanism for raising the brushes

flow through the collector rings , brushes and the external rheostat . When the rotor completes its starting period, the motor brushes are short circuited through the rheostat and a signal is sent to the system . This signal makes the motor "E" to start and to drive the spool "A" over the shaft until the knife type male connector "G" engages the female side "H", short-circuiting the rotor windings. Just before the engagement is completed, the mechanism "B" for raising the brushes starts to operate, separating the brushes from the slip rings . If by any reason the wound rotor motor shuts down the mechanism is automatically reset to its original condition, i.e., with the brushes lowered and the contacts disengaged .

SYSTEM OPERATION
The wound rotor motor must always start with the brushes "C" lowered i.e. in contact with the rotor collector rings "D", making the rotor winding current GE Industrial Control Systems GEEP-390-I

The rheostat has a protection system to avoid the main wound rotor motor from starting if the rotor is short-circuited and the brushes are lifted . This must be verified passing a 30 mils feeler gauge between the brushes and the rings .

INSTALLATION AND SET UP

After completion of the electrical connections of the brush lifting system according to "Brush Lifting And Shorting Device" drawing (see also fig. 3 - Electrical Diagram) and before operating the main motor , the following procedures are recommended: 1 - Verify if the one-phase and three-phase connections are correct and check for power availability . 2 - Manually close the contactor K2 and check if the arm moves the spool towards the rotor rings to short-circuit them. If the direction is opposite, then reverse any two of the three phases of the power source. 3 - Temporarily install an auxiliary SPDT type contact to connect the rheostat terminals (reference : positions 7 and 9 common plus 8 and 10 of control diagram on fig. 3 ) in order to simulate signals from rheostat . 4 - Mannually actuate the auxiliary contact ( SPDT ) - close 9 / 10 , open 7 / 8. In this condition, the shortcircuiting movement must be followed by the raising of the brushes. Actuate again the contact mannually activating the system backwards - open 9 / 10 , close 7 / 8. Now the brushes must be lowered first and the knife type contacts disconnected afterwards. Repeat this operation several times to assure everything is working properly as described below. 5 - The knife type contacts must have engaged approximately 1 inch before the brushes start to move upwards. Total engagement is approximately 1.25 inch and normally produces a typical sound from the spool locking device which consists of a spring / ball and an undercut on shaft. After locking the spool, the driving yoke returns 0.125 inch to avoid continuous contact between yoke ball bearing and spool ( if ball bearing gets in contact with the spool continuously, it will be damaged in a very short period of time ). 6 - When the knife type contacts are completely engaged the brushes must also be already lifted.

7 - When the system is activated backwards, returning to main wound rotor motor starting condition, with the brushes lowered and the rotor winding NOT short-circuited , the locking device will lock the spool producing again the characteristic sound . Again the yoke must return 0.125 inch to avoid continuous contact between the ball bearing and the spool .

8 - There must be enough pressure between the brushes and the rings to guarantee a good electric contact between them and this can be verified as described bellow .

MAINTENANCE
The brushes must be replaced whenever their exposed length is less or equal to 90 mils. When the brushes are removed , before assembling new ones , measure the minimum distance between empty brush holder and ring with a feeler gauge , it must be between 40 and 60 mils ( this assures the brush holder will never touch the ring ) . To assure there is enough pressure between brush and ring , a portable scale should be installed on brush holder lifting hook as indicated in fig 2 . Pull the scale and read the value at which the brush holder starts to move , it must be between 9 and 11 pounds . Correct the spring force if necessary . The brushes should last for a long period of time if starts are not frequent . The contact surfaces of male and female contacts should be examined at least every three months to look for sparking marks, dirty contacts and hot spots. They can be cleaned with fine sandpaper and solvent. They may also be silver plated to improve electrical contact if so decided by the maintenance electrical engineer . At least once a year repeat the procedure described on items 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 above and verify also if the spool is sliding easily on the shaft. Add molybde -

num disulfide grease (D6Y14A2) whenever necessary . Inspect also the ball bearings which must be running free but tight . They are shielded and can not be greased . External diameter must be free from friction marks and maintain the original round shape .
