Also, the DCON theme was announced last month during Fall Rally in Dallas. Its Hooked on Service! and its based on Peter Pan. It will very literally be magical and you wont want to miss it. Letter from the PRESIDENT

Dear Key Clubbers,
Fall is coming, which means colder weather, thicker scarves, and pretty leaves. But more importantly, it means countless fall festivals to serve at and Trick or Treat for UNICEF. This year, we want to raise more money than ever before for ELIMINATE and the adorable Trick or Treat boxes are a great way to do that! $5 equals one physical hour. Think about how many lives we are changing with this money! Its truly inspirational and wonderful the work we do. In just two days, I raised over $20 for Cypress Falls KEY CLUB Newsletter ELIMINATE. I am making a greater change than I ever thought I could. I challenge all of yall to raise as much money as you can to save mothers and their babies. What could go to a greater cause? For the month of October, we have many awesome events for members to participate in! This includes the Adam Elementary Festival, Saint Maximilian Fall Festival, Color Fest, Houston Italian Festival, and much more! As a freshman, I loved serving at the fall festivals at the elementary schools because it created such a great interaction with the community. October is a great month for thanking the community by giving by through volunteering.

Volunteer Til You Drop!
By Winnie Lu, Freshman Rep
Approximately two weeks ago, I volunteered at my first event as a freshman, Shop Til You Drop. I absolutely fell in love with volunteering after participating in this event. I found out about so many different aspects and cultures in our community and it was a great to be able to help out the vendors who had prepared and put in so much hard work. It was a wonderful event because the majority of the shops are local and a lot of the merchandise and products were handmade. Also, a portion of the products were customized for the customers and I think this was another great aspect of this event. There were many things there that are usually hard to find elsewhere. This really shows a large sense of community and our community members coming together. Another great thing about this event was that proceeds benefitted the Cy-Fair Womens Club Scholarship Fund and many other local Houston charities. Not only that, I also met a lot of people and made new friends, including people from other high schools. At Shop Til You Drop, I saw and helped a lot of vendors who had handmade home dcor and jewelry pieces. You could definitely tell that they had spent a lot of time, effort and passion into creating their merchandise. The hard work that these vendors had dedicated to their business and products is incredible, so I was really glad to be able to help them out. I volunteered the afternoon shift, so the other volunteers and I spent a large chunk of our time there helping take apart the shops. We helped the vendors pack up their products, take down their shop grids (for hanging merchandise) and take down shelves, tables, signs, etc. Then, we carried out, or pushed out on a cart, all of the merchandise and setup outside to the Berry Center curb and parking lot. There, we helped vendors stock their belongings into their cars. It was great to help them out so they were able to relax a little after a long day of working. After all the vendors had their merchandise packed away in their vehicles, the volunteers and I set out to clean up the Berry Center. We removed all the sectioning tape off of the ground, and picked up a lot of excess trash. Overall, the v olunteers spent the majority of their time cleaning up the event and Berry Center entirely before signing out. This was the very first Key Club event Ive been to and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I even surprised myself with how much fun I had at Shop Til You Drop. Im excited to volunteer at a lot of events this year and I cannot wait for the next annual Shop Til You Drop!

As a new member of Key Club, I was amazed to find out what Key club is actually about. All I knew was that members volunteered. But for what? Isnt Key Club just like any club in school? I asked to myself. The answer is no. I was surprised to find out to find out about the variety of volunteer works. From libraries to international campaigns, the amount you can do is grand. Just doing tiny projects can impact the world in such a positive light. I am looking forward to do the Eliminate Project. Billons of people have so little resources, and it only takes about a $1.50 for vaccinations. My lunch cost more than a b abys life. Another thing I didnt know about Key Club is its procedures. When I first heard about Key Club Hours, I was really overwhelmed. It sounded very intimidating, and I was kind of discouraged. But with the encouragement of friends, I joined and am so glad I did. I think, to attract more members, Key Club officers should explain it in simple terms and explain that it isnt that bad in terms of requirements to be a member. Only after the second meeting did I understand and relaxed a little. As a new officer, I am looking forward to learning new things and teaching new things to fellow officers. Not only does Key Club enhance your work ethics, it strengthens your leadership skills. It allows students to take charge and change their community. Students can come up with new ideas and explore different ways to fulfill the plan whatever it may be. When you are a leader, you must learn to work with fellow classmates. That may be difficult for many people, because it requires you to compromise even though you may not like it. And you may have to find the courage to speak up when you dont agree about something. I will, through m y experiences, find the equilibrium between those two and advice with others before I complete an action. So as a new member and officer, I am glad to be a part of an organization that helps the lives of so many people around the world. I am waiting for new friendships to spurt from this club and develop into a long lasting relationship past the club and high school. I appreciate opportunity of being part of the contribution to my community.

Governors Project

Spotlight

Have you ever wanted to take a stand against something so prevalent in schools that it affects one in seven students every year? Well, now you have your chance! This year, the governors project theme is anti-bullying, and we can do our part by wearing a blue shirt this Monday, October 7. I know its also Hawaiian day, BUT if you wear a blue shirt and some leis and sandals, you can be stylish AND help bring awareness about bullying and its effects on high schoolers. Bullying is a serious issue, and together, we can all raise awareness and make bullying so pass.

Trick or Treat for ELIMINATE?

If yall have looked at a calendar lately, you mightve noticed that its October. What does this mean? Cooler weather (THANK GOODNESS), leaves changing color, and Halloween! Personally, Halloween has been one of my most favorite holidays EVER, because its cold- and who doesnt love candy? However, instead of getting candy this fall, you, as a Key Clubber, have an opportunity to save mothers and babies just by trick or treating. How? TRICK OR TREAT FOR UNICEF/ELIMINATE! Its super easy. You just have to pick up an orange box and collect money in it and turn it in after Halloween! Remember, every $1.80 you collect goes to save mothers and babies from neonatal and maternal tetanus. If we all do our part now, neonatal and maternal tetanus will soon be a thing of the past. What will you trick or treat for this Halloween?

Dorothy, Nafeesa and I are trick or treating for ELIMINATE. 8
