Hilary Hao | Patricia Tan The Case of Ariel Castro Monday afternoon May 6, 2013 Ariel Castro forgot

ot to lock the big inside door of his home when he left for McDonalds, giving three women a chance to live normally once again, after almost a decade of captivity in this run-down house just a few blocks away from their real home. Ariel Castro (52 years old), a former school bus driver, held captive three women in his Cleveland home for more than a decade. The three women, Michelle Knight (32 years old), Amanda Berry (27 years old), and Gina de Jesus (23 years old) disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004. Castro reportedly lured the victims into his car on separate occasions, with all three women accepting his offer because they knew the suspects children. Castro drove them to his house, and chained them up in the basement. The women were bound with duct tape, restrained with an extension cord, and chained to a pole in the basement. The house was wired with alarm clocks in a makeshift manner, to create an alarm system to the house. They were fed one meal a day, and were punished with the cold of the basement and the heat of the attic. Worse, Castro kept them as sex slaves. He allegedly impregnated one of the women five times, and punched her in the stomach until she miscarried. It was a decade-long nightmare of beatings, chained confinement, starvation, forced sexual conduct and death threats for the three women. Ariel Castro was able to keep this a secret for more than a decade. With the escape of the three women from this House of Horror, the police were able to elicit a statement from the suspect regarding the crime. Castro admitted to kidnapping the women, but blamed it to his sickness, claiming he was plagued by an addiction to sex and pornography, similar to that of alcoholism. He claims to have no control over his addiction, saying, My sexual problem its so bad in my mind. On the other hand, Castro denied torturing or beating up his victims. He claims that any sexual activity was consensual and that there was a lot of harmony in the house. Moreover, he claims living a normal life, and the victim reported that he even went to Church every Sunday. Experts say that based on the suspects 16-minute statement in court, Ariel Castro is likely a sexual sadist who knew exactly what he was doing when he abducted and held his victims captive, but who refuses to take responsibility for his crimes. He also exhibits psychopathy, which is not a mental illness, but a personality disorder that is distinguished by a stunning lack of conscience. Such people show no remorse or empathy for what they do. Separate information has also emerged regarding Ariel Castros relationship with Grimilda Figueroa, his common-in-law wife. Since 1997, Figueroa had sole custody of their four daughters. In 2005, Figueroa got a temporary protective order against Castro after she complained that he broke her nose, ribs, shoulder and tooth. He also frequently threatened to kill her and their children, and attempted many times to abduct the kids and keep them from their mother. In November 2005, a court judge dissolved the protective order against Castro when Figueroas attorney was unable to appear in court.

Moral Situation faced by character Berry told police that Castro forgot to lock the "big inside door" of the home when he left Monday to a nearby McDonald's Ariel Castro, aged 52 at time of capture (May 2013), a former school bus driver, held captive three women in his run-down Seymour Avenue, Cleveland home for over a decade. A decade of torture. Prisoner of war The three women, Michelle Knight (kidnapped 2002 (age 20), now 32) Amanda Berry (kidnapped 2003, now 27), Gina de Jesus (kidnapped 2004, now 23) and, disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16 and 20. Castro approached woman asking for directions, and offered to give her a ride. She accepted the ride because she knew/was friends with Castros son and/or daughter. Castro lured the victims into his car on separate occasions and kept their presence in his west Cleveland home a secret for more than a decade. All three were chained up in the basement, but Castro eventually freed them to live on the second floor. Drove her to house, restrained with an extension cord, dragged to basement, restrained with chaines, raped. Bound with duct tape, chained to a pole in the basement The home was wired with alarm clocks in a makeshift manner, to create and alarm system to the house. The women were restrained by chains attached to their ankles with access only to plastic toilets in the bedrooms that were rarely emptied. Castro fed them one meal a day. Punishment techniques: cold of the basement, heat o fthe attic

Forced sexual conduct, locked in a dark room, Kidnapping, rape, assault, aggravated murder. Kept as sex slaves beatings, chained confinement, starvation and death threats The report alleges that Castro impregnated Knight five times, forced her to starve for weeks at a time and punched her in the stomach until she miscarried. Castro, the report said, also forced Knight to deliver Berry's baby in a plastic kiddie pool and threatened to murder Knight if the newborn died Impregnating victims, causing abortion The women were kept in two rooms, behind a door that could be secured from the outside with a lock. Cut off from the outside world 6 year old daughter with berry Circumstances/modifiers Separately, information has surfaced on Ariel Castro's relationship with Grimilda Figueroa, mother of four of his children. In 2005, Figueroa got a temporary protective order against Castro after she complained that he broken her nose, ribs, dislocated her shoulder and knocked out her tooth. Castro threatened multiple times to kill her and a daughter, Figueroa's attorney wrote on the petition. Since 1997, Figueroa had sole custody of the children fathered by Castro. They lived with her full time in a house on Liberty Avenue in Cleveland. But, the attorney wrote, Castro "frequently abducts daughters and keeps them from mother." The protective order that barred Castro from coming near her or the children noted that Castro has access to firearms and deputies attempting to enforce the order should "proceed with caution." Castro challenged the order and when Figueroa's attorney was unable to appear at a November hearing, the judge dissolved the protective order on Nov. 21, 2005. We have reports that Castro was violent towards his common-in-law wife, Grimilda Figueroa, with whom he had three children. She reported to police that Castro "broken petitioner's nose (twice), ribs, lacerations, knocked out tooth, blood clot on brain, (inoperable tumor), dislocated shoulder, (twice, once on each side) threatened to kill petitioner and daughters 3 to 4 times just this year."

Agents motive He admitted to kidnapping them. Ariel Castro blamed the kidnapping on his sex addiction, comparing it to ones addiction to alcohol. He was plagued by an addiction to porn. I am sick. My sexual problem. Its so bad in my mind, I never tortured them, or beat them up. He had everything going on for himself, though, according to him. He claims that he had no control over his addiction, and said that he is not a monster. He claims to have lived a normal life, and the sex he did was consensual, so he denies raping them. There was a lot of harmony in the house, Castro went to Church every Sunday, but came home to torture us. Ariel kept everyone at a distance," Tomba said. "You didn't go into his house. You called before you came over. He ran the show. He was the big bully. Ariel Castros rambling, 16-minute statement in court has shed some light on the type of person he is, experts say: a likely sexual sadist who knew exactly what he was doing when he abducted and held three women captive, but who refuses to take responsibility for his crimes. And psychopathys not a mental illness, its a personality disorder and its distinguished by a stunning lack of conscience no remorse or empathy for what they do. Theyre very arrogant individuals."
