09-24Optic Neuritis 2013 Op c Neuri s (ON) has been observed in about 40% of MS pa ents during the course of their disease and may be the rst presen ng event in about 20% of pa ents with MS. It is characterized by loss of vision in the aected eye and pain on movement of the eye. Much less commonly, pa ents with ON may describe transient ashes of light and black squares (phosphenes) las ng from hours to months.

Onset of ON typically occurs over minutes or hours, rarely days; however, loss of vision (visual acuity) progresses over days to weeks and may range from minimal to profound. Complete loss of vision is very rare in op c neuri s and hence other poten al causes should be considered in such pa ents.
