Zachariah The Hadith of Gabriel P1

Hadith: saying, description, or action of the Prophet Muhammad. It may even be about the Companions, but the Prophet, SAWS, was there Categories: Authentic, Forged Authentic (sahih) is like its historically verified; documentation, verified by evidence, witnessed, and reported There were so many people who report it thats impossible that they all got together and decided to lie. Too many people have verified it to make it a lie There are a whole bunch of people saying the same thing, so you can be more confident that it actually happened Forged People forged them I.e., a guy who sold eggplants made up a hadith about how eggplants are so good A guy made up a hadith for the Caliph at the time. He used to like to play with doves and raise doves. What he did, he made up a hadith about how great it was to take care of doves because he wanted the Caliph to like him. So how do you know if its true? Rely on scholars, not just the guy whos trying to sell eggplants Everything in Islam should have a reference Sometimes people make up stories with good intentions. One scholar made up a hadith about how great it was to read certain surahs. Basically, if you read x-surah, you get this, if you read y-surah, youll get this. People approached him about it and accused him of lying. He said he saw people studying other things and he wanted to bring them back to the Quran The Prophet (pbuh) said Whoever says something about me that I didnt say, then let them take their place in the hellfire. Say youre paraphrasing OR dont say the Prophet (pbuh) said this The Prophet (pbuh) and his Jewish neighbor who used to dump garbagemade up. Reason being, Jews didnt live in Medina with Muslims. They lived in fortresses outside of Medina The story about Ali fighting a man who spat at him, and he walked away because he didnt want his pride to get in the way also made up So theres authentic, forged, and everything in between. They exist on a spectrum. Good sources for hadith: Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, First Hadith in Muslim: it summarizes all of Islam. Its a story The Hadith of Gabriel

Umar ibn al-Khattab said: One day when we were with God's messenger, a man with very white clothing and very black hair came up to us. No mark of travel was visible on him, and none of us recognized him. Sitting down before the Prophet, leaning his knees against his, and placing his hands on his thighs, he said, "Tell me, Muhammad, about submission." He replied, 'Submission means that you should bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is God's messenger, that you should perform the ritual prayer, pay the alms tax, fast during Ramadan, and make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to go there." The man said, "You have spoken the truth." We were surprised at his questioning him and then declaring that he had spoken the truth. He said "Now tell me about faith." He replied, "Faith means that you have faith in God, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and that you have faith in the measuring out, both its good and its evil." Remarking that he had spoken the truth, he then said, "Now tell me about doing what is beautiful." He replied, "Doing what is beautiful means that you should worship God as if you see Him, for even if you do not see Him, He sees you." Then the man said, "Tell me about the Hour" The Prophet replied, "About that he who is questioned knows no more than the questioner." The man said, "Then tell me about its marks." He said, "The slave girl will give birth to her mistress, and you will see the barefoot, the naked, the destitute, and the shepherds vying with each other in building." Then the man went away. After I had waited for a long time, the Prophet said to me, "Do you know who the questioner was, 'Umar?" I replied, "God and His messenger know best." He said, "He was Gabriel. He came to teach you your religion. "

So lets parse this: Umar ibn al-Khattab said: One day when we were with God's messenger, a man with very white clothing and very black hair came up to us. No mark of travel was visible on him, and none of us recognized him.

Umar establishes the scene, when something strange happened. White clothing and black hair is significant because Arabs considered contrast to be very beautiful (i.e. black hair with white skin; black pupil with white sclera)

No mark of travel was visible on him, and none of us recognized him. Medina was a small place; everyone knew everyone. Umar is saying no one knew who he was, but they could tell he wasnt a traveler. Sitting down before the Prophet, leaning his knees against his, and placing his hands on his thighs, he said, "Tell me, Muhammad, about submission." Interesting; Gabriel called him (pbuh) by his first name. Even the Companions referred to him as Rasullulah (Servant of God)

He replied, 'Submission means that you should bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is God's messenger, that you should perform the ritual prayer, pay the alms tax, fast during Ramadan, and make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to go there." Gabriel asked Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) about Islam. Islam (as a deen) is composed of Islam (submission), Iman (belief), and Ihsan (utmost excellence) Important to recognize that Arabs then understood Islam in its linguistic sense (What is your religion? I am one who surrendered to God.) The first pillar is to speak out loud (you have to testify) The second thing is to pray (you have to be conscious of God through active prayer) The third is to pay zakah (you have to give) The fourth is fasting (you have to sacrifice) The fifth is pilgrimage (you have to move) These are all outward. Submission is an outward thing, whereas Iman is to believe The man said, "You have spoken the truth." We were surprised at his questioning him and then declaring that he had spoken the truth. He said "Now tell me about faith." He replied, "Faith means that you have faith in God, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and that you have faith in the measuring out, both its good and its evil." Gabriel asked Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) about belief (iman) This is inward, in the heart. A person can do all the outward things, while lacking the inward things. Surah 49 about the Bedouins who say We believe, when in fact they were just asking for something. Youve submitted outwardly, but belief hasnt entered their hearts yet. Remarking that he had spoken the truth, he then said, "Now tell me about doing what is beautiful." He replied, "Doing what is beautiful means that you should worship God as if you see Him, for even if you do not see Him, He sees you." Gabriel asked Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) about utmost excellence (ihsan) Ihsan is the highest extent of beauty It is to do things to the absolute best of your abilities Note that all of these things are stacked: you start with the base stuff, the pillars, then you move into faith, then you achieve perfection You do everything as if you can see Allah watching you. In another hadith, even if you dont see Him, then know that He sees you. You remind yourself that Allah is watching you. Then the man said, "Tell me about the Hour" The Prophet replied, "About that he who is questioned knows no more than the questioner."

Gabriel asked Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) about the Day of Judgement You know as much as I do; we both know something about it, but its the same. Cryptic answer. The man said, "Then tell me about its marks." He said, "The slave girl will give birth to her mistress, and you will see the barefoot, the naked, the destitute, and the shepherds vying with each other in building." Then the man went away. After I had waited for a long time, the Prophet said to me, "Do you know who the questioner was, 'Umar?" I replied, "God and His messenger know best." He said, "He was Gabriel. He came to teach you your religion. " Umar waited until the Prophet (pbuh) to address him. Some hadith say he waited as long as 3 days. This hadith is significance because it explains our whole religion.

Q&A: How do you tell if something is Shia or Sunni Shia will never quote Umar or Abu Bakr or Aishah Ask a real person that you trust and know as a religious figure and ask them about this person, and ask if they would recommend them Even among Sunni people there are some who I.e. one scholar was a very good speaker, very attractive, sharp looking, always smiling. Nonetheless he made serious mistakes in hadith.
