THIGS TO DO AFTER VISA

Before coming to USA

1. Write letter to universities from which you have got I-20 but you are not joining
about your decision to join “ZZZZ” university.

2. Write a letter to universities from which you received I-20 saying about
deferring of admission to the following semester. (In case you wish to shift in the
next semester to that university.)

3. Foreign exchange conversion (Money to be carried)


Money to be carried = [(Half of the tuitions on I-20) + Health Insurance + Initial Months
Expenses (2000 $)]
Out of which 300 $ in cash and rest in traveler’s checks and or demand Draft in favor of
university.
Traveler’s checks are very suitable. Demand Drafts sometimes create problems.

4. Visit Family Doctor


1) Get family doctor’s sign on the health form provided by the university. If
university do no issue any form then get a letter from doctor on his
letterhead stating the vaccination and the date on which it is taken with his
sign and stamp (Format attached at bottom).
2) Take hepatitis-B vaccines, Tetanus toxoid and other required vaccines.
3) Get the chest X ray done (PA View).
4) Take whole file of medical records to the university.
5) Get all the necessary medicines and their prescription.

5. Take oversees mediclaim policy for minimum period. (This is required till you get
your health insurance in the USA)
Companies such as New India assurance, United India etc. give such type of policies.
Consult any agent for this. Generally company emphasizes that 2 months heath policy
should be taken for students. But take it for minimum amount of period. It can be taken
for small that is around 21 days.
As such this policy is not required but this is supposed to help if you are injured
while coming to university (Pray for that this will not happen with anybody). But do
not think of much help.
Things required for taking insurance:
1.Filling the form and for that photocopies of passport and I-20.
2.Name and address with telephone of doctor and his registration no.
7. Visit Dentist and take suitable treatment and ask him how to take the care of
teeth while you will in USA.

8. Visit ophthalmologist (Whether you are having any eye problem or not)
Take 2-3 glasses to the university or proper number of contact lenses whichever
applicable. Take medicines and eye drops from the doctor with prescription.

9. Contact Indian Student Association for temporary accommodation and ask them
about arrival on the campus.

10. Medicines.
Get prescription written down by your Doctor for the medicines strip you are taking.
Bring the medicines in bulk (If you are having some specific illness), as they are
expensive in US.

11. Purchase Bags according to specification. (Generally 2 check-in pieces are


allowed with one hand luggage. Check in luggage with total linear dimension (l + b +
h) not exceeding 270 cms. And linear dimension of each should not exceed 115cm
and weight of each bag should not exceed 32 Kgs.)

13. List of utensils

1. Pressure cooker (5-7 liters)


2. Mug (For drinking tea 4 Nos.) (Get microwaivable)
3. Small Spoons for regular purpose (bring 12)
4. Bring 3-4 utensils for making vegetables, dals, curry etc. (Flat Bottom)
5. Tava (flat bottom)
6. Polpat latne (for making chapattis??????)
7. Microwaivable appliances. (Dishes, utensils etc)
8. Frying pan (Big one which can cook food around 10 people)
9. Ravi (For making buttermilk)
10. All Big Spoons Like (Spoon for stirring vegetables, Dal etc)
11. Some plastic Dabbas for storing grocery (Actually you can collect plastic Dabbas
of Yogurts etc. after coming to US.)
12. Knife---2 (For Cutting Vegetables etc)
13. Plastic Bowls
14. Plastic dishes
15. Filter for Tea.
16. Instrument for scrapping/peeling outer skin of vegetables such as Potato etc
17. A Plastic dabba for storing everyday masala items.
18. Utensils for pouring edible oil. (Preferably Tupperware)

14 Food Items

1. Papads (2-3 pack small)


2. Tea (0.5 Kg)
3. Coffee (1 Small Packet)
4. Sambar Masala, Goda Masala and Pavbhaji Masala as mush as possible (Minimum 0.5
Kg)
5. Chat Masala
6. Hing (Asafetida)
7. Masala Items (Small quantity) Cloves, Red Chilly Powder, Jira, Ova, Mustard seeds,
Turmeric Powder etc.
8. Pickle Bottles (Sealed containers)
9. Small quantities of dals (Toor dal, mug dal)
10. Poha
11. Rice
12. Rava
13. Shengadana Kut (Roasted and grated groundnut)

All these personal items (13), utensils (14) and food items (15) can be adjusted according to
space available in the bag and can delete some items, you can purchase after coming here.

15. Original Documents. (Take all the original documents to the school.)

1. All original mark sheets from S.S.C. to B.E. (or respective)


2. All passing certificates.
3. Degree certificate (Convocation)
4. School leaving certificate
5. College leaving certificate
6. Statement of purpose. (SOP)
7. Recommendation letters.
8. Transcripts.
9. Medical history file.

Some of the things such as SOP, Recommendation etc can be stored on CDS or floppies and
can bring those CDs.

16. For all the documents mentioned in 15 take 3 photocopies (One for home and remaining sets
in check-in bags and original in cabin bag.

17. Stationery
1. Rug sack for school
2. Scientific calculator
3. Lead pencils (0.5 mm) 2-3 in number with lead boxes.
4. Ball pens and refills
5. Eraser
6. Stapler with pins.
7. Reference books/ textbooks etc.

18. Prepare a book containing addresses, telephone os and e-Mail ID of friends and
relatives from both India & USA.

19. Finally things to be left at home.


1. Copies of book containing addresses of friends & relatives (as mentioned in 18)
2. Photocopies of original documents (mentioned in 15) and copies of passport with visa and
any other endorsements if any.
3. Medical history file (Photocopies)
4. Few blank signed papers.
5. Passport size photos.
6. Photocopy of Issue slip of traveler’s checks.

20. Things to be kept in Hand Bag (which is with passenger in the flight).

1. Regular medicines (Avomin, diegene)


2. Books for reading.
3. Full sweater.
4. Folders containing original documents.
5. Money (Cash, Traveler checks, DD)
6. Book Containing addresses of relatives and friends.
7. Contact details of persons who are going to pick you up or the telephone number of
roadrunner or Bus Company, which are taking you to campus.
8. Passport size photograph.
9. Two Sets of clothes if bag is misplaced in the journey.

21. Format for vaccination statement if the university does not provide the health
form.
Take it on doctor’s letterhead with his sign and seal/stamp.
