News Release from the Office of the Deputy Prime-Minister SEVERN CENTRE GIVEN SPECIAL RECOGNITION IN NATIONAL AWARD

Todmorden/Grimsby Medical Centre

The Severn Centre has been selected for special recognition within The Deputy Prime Ministers Award for Sustainable Communities 2005. The Deputy Prime Minister's Award for Sustainable Communities recognises projects and initiatives that contribute to making towns, cities and communities, including those in rural areas, better places in which to live and work. They pay tribute to those people whose commitment and enthusiasm are making a significant contribution towards the building of thriving and successful communities. The Severn Centre is a multi-use community building and outside sports and play facility in Highley, one of the most deprived parts of Shropshire. Bridgnorth District Council lead the project to build the new, fully-accessible Centre with the support of the local community and in partnership with other stakeholders. The Centre provides a variety of community and leisure functions including a library, 58-place childcare suite, police station, fitness suite, community hall, social area/bar, IT suite, Multi-Use Games Area, childrens play area, crown green bowling green, tanning suite, football/cricket pitches, outdoor swimming pool heated by a solar-powered hot-water system and sports hall.
