Masks let you isolate and protect areas of an image as you apply color changes, filters, or other effects to the rest of the image. When you select part of an image, the area that is not selected is masked or protected from editing. You can also use masks for complex image editing, such as gradually applying color or filter effects to an image. Quick mask mode lets you edit any selection as a mask without using the Channels palette (more on palettes below) and while viewing your image. Screen modes. The screen mode buttons provide different screen views of your image. The left button is standard screen mode, the middle is full screen mode with the menu bar, and the right is full screen mode without the menu bar. Jump into ImageReady. ImageReady is another Adobe image-editing program. With the Jump into feature, you can jump between Photoshop and ImageReady to transfer an image between the two applications for editing without closing or exiting the originating application. In addition, you can jump from ImageReady to other graphics-editing programs and HTML editing programs installed on your system. Jumping to a program saves you from having to close the file in one program and reopen it in another.

Palettes
By default Photoshops palettes are stacked up together in groups on the right side of the screen. Palettes help you monitor and modify images. Note that each of the palettes includes tabs that allow you access to more options. Navigator palette Navigator palette is use to zoom in and out of the image that you are working on. You can zoom in and out by using the little triangle at the bottom of the navigator tab window. Or you could type what % percentage of size you want at the bottom left of the navigator tab. If the entire image is not visible in the document window, you can navigate to bring another area of the image into view. Info palette The Info palette displays information about the color values beneath the pointer or cursor and, depending on the tool in use, other useful measurements. Color palette The Color palette displays the color values for the current foreground and background colors. Using the sliders in the Color palette, you can edit the foreground or background colors according to several different color models. You can also choose a foreground or background color from the spectrum of colors displayed in the color ramp at the bottom of the palette. Swatches palette You can choose a foreground or background color from the Swatches palette, or you can add or delete colors to create a custom swatch library. Creating libraries of swatches can help you group related or special swatches and manage palette size. Styles palette The Styles palette lets you view and select preset layer styles. By default, applying a preset style replaces the current layer style.

16

History palette You can use the History palette to revert to a previous state of an image, to delete an image's states, and in Photoshop, to create a document from a state or snapshot. Actions palette You use the Action palette to record, play, edit, and delete individual actions. This palette also lets you save and load action files. Tool Preset palette Tool preset let you save and reuse tool settings. You can load, edit, and create libraries of tool presets using the Tool Preset picker in the options bar, the Tool Presets palette, and the Preset Manager. Layers palette The Layers palette lists all layers, layer set, and layer effects in an image. You can accomplish many tasks-such as creating, hiding, displaying, copying, and deleting layers-using buttons in the Layers palette. You can access additional commands and options in the Layers palette menu and the Layers menu. Channels palette The Channels palette lets you create and manage channels and monitor the effects of editing. The palette lists all channels in the image-composite channel first (for RGB, CMYK, and Lab images), then individual color channels, spot color channels, and finally alpha channels. A thumbnail of the channel's contents appears to the left of the channel name; the thumbnail automatically updates as you edit the channel. Paths palette The Paths palette lists the name and a thumbnail image of each saved path, the current work path, and the current vector mask. Decreasing the size of thumbnails or turning them off lets you list more paths in the palette, and turning thumbnails off can improve performance. To view a path you must first select it in the Paths palette.

17

File Browser palette File Browser lets you view, sort, and process image files. You can use the File Browser to perform tasks such as creating new folders; renaming, moving, and deleting files; and rotating images. You can also view individual file information and data imported from your digital camera. Brushes palette The Brushes palette lets you select preset brushes and design custom brushes. Working with brushes is an important part of using the painting and editing tools. The brush you select determines many characteristics of the resulting stroke. Photoshop provides a variety of preset brushes to fill a wide range of uses.
