Oldest Battle Of Britain
Pilot Dies At 99
WILLIAM WALKER, whosepoemis part
of anational monument to his comrades in
theBattleof Britain, has died at age99.
TheBattleof Britain Trust said Walker
died at homein London last month.
Walker, a Spitfre fghter pilot, was shot
down and took abullet in his right ankleon
August 26, 1940, as British pilots engaged
aGerman bomber force.
His poemOur Wall is inscribed on the
memorial on theDover cliffs to thenearly
3,000 men who few in the battle from June
to October 1940
After retiring as chairman of the Ind
Coope brewery, Walker wrote poetry
including tributes to the fiers hailed by
Winston Churchill: Never in the feld of
human confict was so much owed by so
many to so few.
ITS AN UNUSUAL man who can
forgive his wartime torturer or whose
quest to do so can touch so many people
around the world.
Eric Lomax, a former British prisoner
of war whose moving tale of wartime
torture and forgiveness is being turned
into a flm, died last month in Berwick-
upon-Tweed in northern England, his
publisher, Vintage Books, reported.
Lomax was 93.
Lomax was a British army officer
when he was captured by Japanese
forces as they overran Singapore in 1942.
Lomax endured horrifc conditions and
savage beatings as he and thousands of
others were put to work building the
infamous Burma to Siam railroad.
Lomax endured years of suppressed
rage at the torture he suffered at the
hands of his Japanese captors, but when
he tracked his interrogator down, it set
the stage for a dramatic act of forgiveness
that formed the heart of his celebrated
1996 memoir, The Railway Man.
Lomax was born May 30, 1919, in
Edinburgh. He returned there in 1945
after more than three years of inter-
rogation and torture at the hands of the
Japanese.
Lomax is survived by his wife Patti, his
daughter from his frst marriage, Char-
maine, and his step-children, Graeme,
Nicholas, Mark and Jennifer.

THE CHILD ABUSE scandal that has
enveloped oneof Britains most respected
news organizations is now hitting oneof
Americas, as the incoming president of
The New York Times is on thedefensive
about his fnal days as head of the BBC.
Mark Thompson was in chargeof the
BBC in late 2011 when the broadcaster
shelved what would havebeen abombshell
investigation alleging that the late Jimmy
Savile, oneof its biggest stars, was aserial
sex offender.
The BBC scandal has horrifed Britain
with revelations that Savile, a popular
childrens television presenter, cajoled
and coerced vulnerableteens into having
sex with himin his car, in his camper van,
and even in dingy dressing rooms on BBC
premises. Heis also alleged to havesexu-
ally assaulted disabled children at hospitals
that hehelped by raising charity funds.
Police now say there could be more
than 300 victims, leading onechild pro-
tection charity to say that Savile could
rank among Britains most prolifc child
sex predators.
EMPLOYEES
In asign of how thescandal may spread,
the BBC said last month it was looking
into claims of sexual abuse and harass-
ment against nineother current and former
employees and contributors.

Referring to the

who have come

Thompson said he
had never been awareof thewhispers.
If I had, I would have raised them

UK, Scotland To
Set Out Terms Of
Independence Vote
By Ben McConville
and Jill Lawless
ITS NOT A meeting David Cameron
probably enjoyed.
TheBritish primeminister paid avisit
theleader of Scotlands separatist admin-
istration last month to agreetheterms of a
referendumthat could break up theUnited
Kingdom.
Cameron does not want to betheleader
who presides over thedemiseof the300-
year-old political union between England
and its northern neighbour. But, practi-
cally, thereis littlehecan do to stop politi-
cians in semiautonomous Scotland asking
voters whether they want to break free.
With Scotland, like much of Europe,
facing recession and economic uncertainty,
theanswer is hard to predict.
I cant fnd a job and my prospects are
slim, said Sally Murray, an unemployed
offce worker in Edinburgh. Ive got noth-
ing to lose. Perhaps my prospects would
improveby going independent.
Offcials from London and Edinburgh
met for weeks to hammer out details of a
vote. Sticking points included thedateand
thewording of thequestion.
Last month thetwo sides said they had
reached adeal, which was expected to be
approved later by Cameron and Scottish
First Minister Alex Salmond.
REFERENDUM
It is likely to call for areferendumin
October 2014, as Salmonds nationalists
had desired. Cameron and other pro-union
politicians had pressed for thevoteto be
held earlier, becauseopinion polls show
that only between aquarter and athird of
Scots favor splitting thenation.
The referendumwill involve a single
yes-no question on leaving the United
Kingdom, as Camerons government
wished. Salmonds Scottish Nationalist
Party favored including a third option
of greater autonomy short of full inde-
pendence.
Thedeal is likely to give16- and 17-
year-olds votes, another proposal backed
by theScottish nationalists. Thevoting age
in other British elections is 18.
Scotland and England haveacomplex
relationship. They fought one another
for centuries, and Scottish children are
still raised on tales of Robert the Bruce
and WilliamBraveheart Wallace. The
latters story was told, with Hollywood
artistic license, in the Mel Gibson flm
Braveheart. Many Scots arealso brought
up in the Unionist tradition and have
a strong affnity with England and the
monarchy.

Rock Star Mayor
BORIS JOHNSON received a heros
welcome at Britains Conservative
Party conferencelast month, but Prime
Minister David Cameron insists hes
not threatened by theLondon mayors

Crowd-favorite Johnson was care-
ful to use his conference speech last
month to predict Cameron would win
the2015 election rather than encourage
speculation that hewould makeabid
for thejob.
He also basked in post-Olympic
glory, calling for British frms to beat
the recession with the can-do spirit
shown during theLondon Games.
Johnsons political profile was
raised by thesuccessful Olympics and
Paralympics, leading someto suggest
heshould lead theparty into thenext

Cameron told ITV television it was

PROSECUTORS havecharged aman

old girl in Wales.
The46-year-old Mark Bridger was
also charged October 6 with child
abduction and attempting to pervert
the course of justice. He had been in
custody since the day after April Jones
went missing fromoutsideher homein
theWelsh town of Machynlleth.
She was last seen by another child
getting into agrey van.
The girls disappearance sparked
ahugesearch effort with hundreds of
local volunteers combing woods and
felds. She still has not been found, but
aprosecutor said therewas enough evi-
denceto chargeBridger with murder.

Theatregoer Rescued From
Toilet In Early Morning
A MAN created his own personal drama last
month when he had to be rescued from a
theatre toilet after falling asleep.
Croydon fre fghters were called to Fair-
feld Halls theatre at 2:50am to release the
32-year-old man.
A high-level platform was used to reach
the man, who was locked in a fourth-foor
toilet.
Fire fghter Sam Redfern said: He was
drunk, he was absolutely drunk. He had
just fallen asleep and then probably woke
up thinking something is not right here. He
was still drunk when we picked him up but
apparently the show was brilliant according
to him.
Tree Saves Man From
Stag In London Park
ANOTHER London Park animal incident
went viral on YouTube last month; this time
an innocent walk in Bushy Park turned into
a nightmare for a man who was trapped by
a rampaging stag, according to the Daily
Telegraph.
The man wasnt aware it was mating
season, but realised the seriousness of him
being in the vicinity of two animals when
one of the rutting male stags chased him
around the tree he placed between himself
and the angry stag.
The frightened man was shouting: I need
some help here.
After a few dodges around the tree the
man managed to climb to safety in the
branches of the tree.
A witness who flmed the incident ex-
plained: He was just walking along the path
and stopped, but the stag took his choice and
went after the bloke instead.
The man was eventually rescued after the
woman called police for assistance.
It was only a few months ago that Fenton
the dog garnered millions of views when the
animal got loose and was flmed chasing a
herd of deer as his owner chased behind
shouting the dogs name.

Seniors Raided By Police Over
Massive Marijuana Plant
A POT PLANT meant something completely
different to an elderly couple when police
raided their home to confscate the plant.
The pair innocently bought the plant at a
car boot sale, and were shocked to fnd that
their carefully tended shrub was in fact a
gigantic cannabis plant.
Police offcers in Bedford said it was the
biggest plant they had ever seen, reported
the Daily Mail.
Bedfordshire Police later took to Twitter
to comment on their fnd and post a photo
of the huge bush growing in the suburban
garden.
The tweet from Bedford Boroughs local
policing team read: Seized today. Elderly
couple bought shrub at car boot sale, tended
carefully biggest cannabis plant we had
seen!
Degreed Student Gainfully
Employed As . . . A Scarecrow
UNEMPLOYMENT continues in most western
nations and Britain seems be no different,
so one graduate student used creative
thinking last month and took on a job as a
scarecrow.
Jamie Fox, 22, has a degree in music and
English and recently graduated from Bangor
University. Fox is to use a ukulele, accordion
and cowbell to frighten partridges away from
a feld in Norfolk.
His wage will be 250 a week, and he
will wear a bright orange coat and play
the instruments in a ten acre feld where
birds are currenlty unpeturbed by ordinary
scarecrows.
His boss, Aylsham farmer William Youngs,
even warned him to bring a deckchair and
a good book for his days in the oilseed
rape feld.
Fox, who says his friends are slightly
envious of his role, is now saving to pay for
a trip to New Zealand next year.
I get to sit and read for a lot of the time but
whenever I see the partridges, I have to get up
and scare them off, he told the BBC.
Doggy Slimming Champion
Takes Weight Off His Mind
JACK the King Charles Spaniel has been
named as Britains pet slimming champion
after losing a third of his bodyweight.
Seven-year-old Jack, formerly nicknamed
Jumbo Jack, tipped the scales at 40lbs
double his ideal weight six months ago.
Now, he is down to a far healthier 31lbs,
trimming nearly eight inches off his waist,
after a strict diet and exercise regime.
Jack was already overweight when he was
adopted by current owner, Rose Welsh, 52,
back in January. Welsh said: When Jack
frst came to us he was morbidly obese and
could barely walk.
Today he is a different dog and we call
him Jumping Jack instead of Jumbo Jack, as
he jumps every time he barks now. He is ft,
healthy and happy everything a pet should
be and we are absolutely thrilled.
Jack beat off competition from 16 other
slimming pets to win the competition, or-
ganised by veterinary charity PDSA.
Shop Manager Reclaims Two
Sofas From Thieves Van
TWO THIEVES thought theyd done all that
was neccesary when theyd loaded two sofas
into the back of their van.
But, before they made their escape, the
plucky Justin Hallett rushed out and managed
to unload the pieces of furniture before the
rogues could drive off in their getaway van.
Hallett, 37, had his heroic antics caught
on a CCTV camera and now is well-viewed
on YouTube.
The thieves plunder would have been two
brown leather sofas worth 399 in total.
Hallet told The Sun: Ill definitely get
employee of the month for this.

Another Lottery Winner
Goes Back To Work
KNOWN FOR his down-to-earth attitude a
Suffolk man last month proved this when he
announced he would return to his job after
winning 148m.
Adrian Bayford, 41, has gone back to work
at his musical instrument store in Haverhill,
Suffolk despite becoming one of the richest
men in the country.
One shopper said: He was behind the
counter and just seemed perfectly normal.
Hes obviously a nice guy. The shop seemed
quite busy. Whether thats because they
wanted to buy a guitar, or because they
wanted to look at the lottery millionaire, I
dont know.
The Bayfords have splashed out on a new
car a relatively modest 17,000 Ford Kuga
4x4 family car, reported the Daily Mail.
One local resident said: Its a really nice
car, very new and shiny, but not what you
expect a multi-millionaire to own.
Bayfords wife Gillian, 40, a hospital
healthcare assistant, is planning to leave her
job to spend more time with children Aimee,
six, and Cameron, four.
The Bayfords won the second largest
lottery jackpot in British history in August
and celebrated with takeaway pizzas. They
are still living in the same four-bedroom de-
tached house and when they went on holiday
it was to share a caravan in Scotland with
Gillians parents.
Nickname Bucket Heid For
Man With Head Stuck In Bin
WILLIAM MIDDLETON was quite embar-
rassed last month after getting his head stuck
in a city wastepaper bin in Aberdeen.
Middleton, 53, said he accidentally
dropped his hat in the bin while disposing
of some rubbish.
It was while trying to retrieve the hat that
he got his head stuck the whole incident,
including his rescue in front of scores of
onlookers, even saw him getting a new
nickname.
It was shocking... I was stuck for about
20 minutes. It was stinking. Im now known
as Bucket Heid, (Bucket Head) he told The
Scotsman.
Middletons unfortunate accident was
captured on camera by a passer-by and
quickly went viral on Facebook and Twitter.
A passer-by called 999 and within
minutes police, paramedics and fre crews
with specialist cutting equipment arrived at
the scene. Many people sympathised with
his plight leaving hundreds of messages
of support on Facebook. But Middletons
friends saw the funny side.
One woman who did not want to be
named said: I walked around the corner
and saw his walking stick on the ground
and his bum sticking out and said thats
Willie.
Me and my pals tried to pull him out
but his ears were stuck. He is a well-known
public fgure around here and now hes even
more famous.
Edible Bus Stop Could
Become A Reality In London
A NEGLECTED patch of ground adjacent
to a bus stop in West Norwood, a suburb
of London, could soon be a source of food.
Gardeners last month turned out to work
on the area, and said they hoped to cover the
entire local bus route with similar gardens
Following the lead of a similar plot in
Stockwell, the Edible Bus Stop project is
looking to create small gardens along the
322 bus route through Clapham, Herne Hill,
Tulse Hill and Gipsy Hill.
Makaela Gilchrist, one of the projects
co-founders, said: We are looking forward
to making this a fagship of what can be done
with community spaces.
Pets Operation Wins Out
Over Vegas Honeymoon
CLAIRE and Ceri Morgan were devastated
when they discovered their pet American
bulldog was diagnosed with cancer so,
cancelling their honeymoon was not dif-
fcult.
The newlyweds had planned a trip from
Morriston, South Wales to Las Vegas, but
their pet Teeto came frst.
Garage worker Ceri, 36, said: We were
looking forward to our dream honeymoon but
Teeto had to come frst. He added: Hes
such a special dog, we had no hesitation. We
had to use the money for his vets bills.
Claire, 26, said: We told the vet that
it didnt matter about the money, just do
whatever it takes to make him better.
As well as forfeiting their 7,500 honey-
moon, the couple also travelled more than
80 miles from their home every three weeks
for Teetos chemotherapy.
Martian Valley Now Has a
Scottish Relative A Twin
A CELEBRATION was in order at a Scottish
village last month when it was chosen to
twin with a rocky valley on the planet
Mars.
Residents of Glenelg, in the Scottish
Highlands, were excited to learn that an
area of the red planet had been named after
their village.
Nasas space rover Curiosity, was about
to arrive at the Martian Glenelg, reported
The Scotsman.
Villagers decided to host a celebration
of its new cosmic links with a twinning
ceremony.
Glenelg has been named partly because
it is a palindrome, a word which reads the
same forwards as backwards, as Curiosity
will visit it on both the outward and inward
legs of its journey.
Also, features in the area being examined
have been given names associated with Yel-
lowknife, in northern Canada, where Glenelg
is the name of a geological feature.
Residents in Scotlands Glenelg hosted
a Space, Stars and Mars event in October
to celebrate Curiositys arrival at its name-
sake.
It included a visit by Scottish-American
astronaut Bonnie Dunbar, who will take
part in a candlelit walk and a ceilidh. Emma
MacLean, Glenelg Community Development
Trust offcer, said: This does not happen
every day.
Pippa Middleton Publishes

ONE THING everyone
in Britain can agree on:
Pippa Middleton knows
how to party.
So Middleton the
si st er of Kat e, t he
Duchess of Cambridge
was marking the re-
lease of her new book,
Celebrate, with a pri-
vate launch party last
month, posing outside Daunt Books in west
London.
Celebrate is Middletons guide to home
entertaining. It draws on her experiences
working with her parents business, Party
Pieces, and a London-based events com-
pany. It has tips on entertaining for different
celebrations throughout the year as well as
recipes, crafts and games.
Middleton said she hopes to give readers
ideas without breaking the bank.
Penguin published Celebrate last month

Viking published a US edition October 30.
Hearing Aid Aid From Super-
Hero Helps Brit Youngster
FOUR-YEAR-OLD Anthony Smith, who
recently moved from Southampton in
the UK to New Hampshire here in the
US, last month had a deaf superhero
named after himself, and now wears his
hearing aid to school.
Anthony originally insisted that su-
perheroes do not wear hearing aids.
Anthonys mum asked Marvel Com-
ics to help get him to wear his hearing
aid by writing US comic giant after the
youngster refused to wear the device to
school. Within 24 hours, she received a
1984 comic book featuring superhero
Hawkeye wearing a hearing aid after suf-
fering temporary deafness. And Marvel
also created a new character The Blue
Ear, which was Anthonys nickname for
his hearing aid.
Marvel editor Thomas Brennan said:
Our job is to make kids like Anthony
believe in heroes and we will do that
job.
Anthony, who now happily wears his
aid to school, suffers from a rare genetic
disorder which severely affects his hear-
ing. His dad Kevin, 41, said: Anthony is
a massive fan of superheroes, especially
Spiderman, Captain America and The
Avengers.
One day he told my wife that su-
perheroes dont wear blue ears. We
decided to contact Marvel to fnd out if
any of them do.
We were amazed and thrilled by
what they did for us. We are so proud
of him and happy that Marvel did this
amazing gesture for us.

The remaining 58 birds in the colony are
being treated daily with protective drugs sup-
plied by the Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
Experts say that penguins are particularly
vulnerable to malarias avian form because
they have not built up resistance to it unlike
many native birds.
Avian malaria cannot be passed to humans
but it kills in the same way by destroying
red blood cells carrying oxygen. The experts
believe that the penguins are likely to have
caught malaria after a mosquito bit a native
bird with the disease and then passed it on to
them. It cannot be passed directly from bird
to bird or to humans.
Zookeepers at London Zoo are feeding
their penguins at breakfast time with the
medicine Primaquine, which can also be used
to treat the disease in humans. They have set
up mosquito traps in the penguin enclosure
and spray lavender oil in the penguins nest
boxes to deter mosquitos. They have also
planted lavender, which the birds use to
build their nests.
A spokeswoman said: Due to the excep-
tionally wet and muggy weather this summer,
mosquito numbers were unusually high and
ZSLs keepers and vets decided to increase
the penguins preventative anti-malarial
medicine.
Our keepers and vets continue to keep
a close eye on the colony and all penguins
appear healthy and well.
ITS QUEEN HELEN AGAIN
Director Stephen Daldry has revealed that
his frst project after the Olympics will be to
direct Dame Helen Mirren in the West End.
Mirren, 67, will play the Queen again in
The Audience, which will recreate the weekly
meetings the monarch has held with succes-
sive Prime Ministers over the last 60 years.
The play is by Peter Morgan, who wrote
the screenplay for 2006 movie The Queen,
which also starred Mirren.
Daldry, who was the creative director of all
the ceremonies at the Games, described his
role as a fantastic and astonishing journey.
He said: It was the most satisfying thing Ive
ever done in my life. We were all so thrilled
that it went down so well.
The monarchs meetings with the Prime
Minister have always remained secret, with
both parties having an unspoken agreement
never to repeat what is said even to their
spouses.
Mirren will play the Queen from the age
of 25, when she met Winston Churchill, until
her meetings with David Cameron. Daldry
said: The play is a series of imaginings of
her meetings with 12 Prime Ministers. Its
fascinating and unique subject matter.
TRAVEL BY SMARTCARD
Paper train tickets will be phased out and
replaced with smartcards that will always
select the lowest fare, the Transport Sec-
retary vowed.
The technology similar to Oyster cards
used in London will be used across trains,
buses, underground and light rail services,
he said. On each journey, the card would
automatically deduct the cheapest fare, sav-
ing time and effort on buying the right ticket
in advance.
Smart technology is one way of making it
easier for passengers, Norman Baker said. I
want to get a better deal to make sure people
arent ripped off. The savings in getting rid
of magnetic strip tickets will be passed on to
passengers, Baker said.
He said the information that can be put
on smartcards would make it easier for train
fares to ft the way people travel today. The
Association of Train Operating Companies
said it was exploring ways that smart ticket-
ing could cut journey times and offer more
fexible fares.
QUICKER HEALTH SCAN
A phone-sized scanner which provides
high quality images of the inside of the
human body and takes just second to give
a diagnosis is being tested by London Air
Ambulance.
The LAA has been using it to give quick
assessments of internal bleeding without

out a two-week trial of the device. The
machine, called the Vscan, is much smaller
than any other portable ultrasounds the LAA
has used before and takes only 20 seconds
to boot up.
It allows doctors to identify any build-up
of internal fuid suffered by patients after a
serious accident or major trauma a condi-
tion that can cause life-threatening heart
problems. The LAA is now assessing the
effectiveness of the scanner.
POP ART AT WINDSOR
Andy Warhols most famous work in-
cludes iconic images of Marilyn Monroe,
Elizabeth Taylor and a tin of Campbells soup.
But the godfather or Pop Arts portraits of the
Queen have fnally found a place on the walls
of Windsor Castle after they were bought for
the monarchs art collection.
The vibrantly coloured portraits have
been acquired by the Royal Collection to
mark the Queens Diamond Jubilee and will
feature alongside Lucian Freuds 2001 oil
painting and photographs by Cecil Beaton,

ALL CHANGE AT VICTORIA STATION
Commuters using Victoria Tube Station
face major changes as part of a 700m
redevelopment taking place over the next
six years.
The combined rail and tube station is one
of the busiest in the country and is used by
more than 137 million people a year. Tube
bosses said that while everything possible
was being done to keep disruption to a
minimum. Passengers will fnd it easier to
buy tickets in advance.
Construction will double the size of the
south ticket hall and hoardings will shield the
work from passengers. A new entrance will
open near the Cardinal Place shopping mall
in 2016. Refurbishment to escalators will also
start this month though only one escalator at
a time will be out of action.
DISNEY BY THE THAMES
A 2bn scheme to build an 870-acre
entertainment destination on the Thames
Estuary near Bluewater is being promoted as
a rival to Disneyland Paris by little-known 44-
year-old theme park expert, Tony Sefton.
Plans are to create 27,000 jobs on
the scrubby Swanscombe peninsula in a
Paramount-branded park, complete with
water slides and roller coaster.
NEW HELIPAD FOR HOSPITAL
Thousands more lives will be saved with
the launch of Londons second hospital
helicopter landing pad.
Planners have given the go-ahead for
the 4m helipad at St Georges Hospital in
South London and means more seriously
injured patients such as shooting or road
accident victims can be fast-tracked for
emergency care.
Construction is expected to start in De-
cember and completed by next summer. At
present, patients are air-lifted or taken by road
to the Royal London Hospital in East London
for emergency treatment. The Royal London
is mainly used by the London Air Ambulance
in serious emergencies.
This new landing pad means patients
badly injured on the outskirts of London
will now travel shorter distances to get the
treatment they need. A critically ill patients
best chance of survival is to get specialist
treatment within the frst 60 minutes.
The helipad will be built on the rooftop of
St Georges St James Wing, which is fve
storeys high. It will have direct lift access to
the Accident and Emergency Department,
signifcantly reducing transfer times for criti-
cally ill and injured patients.
St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust has
received a 1m HELP Appeal grant for the
helipad. The appeal is run by the County
Air Ambulance Trust, which provides non-
repayable grants to hospitals that need to
update helipads or build new ones.
DRIVER TAKES MAGICAL
MYSTERY TOUR
Bewildered commuters were taken on
a mystery tour of the City when a hapless
London bus driver got lost during the morn-
ing rush hour.
The driver, who passengers said spoke
little English, spent 30 minutes on a loop
around the City before admitting defeat and
asking for directions. Frustrated travellers
aboard the 521 from Waterloo to London
Bridge eventually demanded to be let off when
he confessed to being lost.
One passenger, barrister David Spens,
said at frst he thought the driver was follow-
ing a series of diversions, but grew concerned
as other passengers also became restless
and bemused. Once the driver admitted he
was lost after 30 minutes, Spens offered to
guide him to their destination.
He said: That this could happen in London
in 2012 I fnd truly astonishing. The driver
shouldnt be on the road.
Sheldon Malcolm, communications man-
ager for bus company Go Ahead London,
said: There was an issue with the 521 be-
cause the road was blocked suddenly on the
east-bound route due to an unsafe building.
The driver wasnt certain of the diversion and
it affected several roads. There have been no
complaints to us as far as Im aware.
FINALLY
What did the doctor say about the bus
conductors wife who had triplets?
Typical of London buses you wait
ages for one to arrive, and then three come

BRITAINS new health secretary
has said he favors reducing the limit
for women to have abortions from 24
weeks of pregnancy to 12, reigniting a
divisive political debate and sparking
criticism from womens rights activists
last month.
Jeremy Hunt, who took up the
job just over a month ago, said that
after studying unspecifed evidence he
believed that 12 weeks was the right
point. In an interview with the Times
newspaper, he said: It is just my view
about that incredibly diffcult question
about the moment that we should deem
life to start.
The remarks, coming just before
the annual Conservative Party confer-
ence, immediately stirred up debate
and drew criticism from pro-abortion
rights campaigners and some health
professionals. Abortion is an increas-
ingly sensitive political issue in Britain,
though not as much so as in the US,
where it has fared up in the presiden-
tial campaign despite the candidates
reluctance to dwell on the topic.
PERSONAL
The prime ministers offce stressed
that Hunt was expressing purely per-
sonal views, and that the government
has no plans to change laws on abor-
tion. But campaigners for abortion
rights reacted strongly, attacking the
comments as insulting to women.
I think women and families across
the country will fnd it staggering that
the priority for this government is
playing politics with peoples lives like
this, opposition Labour Party health
spokeswoman Diane Abbott said.
Late abortion only affects a small
number of women, who are often in ex-
tremely challenging circumstances.
Abortion is legal in England, Wales
and Scotland up until 24 weeks of
gestation, although 91 percent of
terminations were carried out before
13 weeks last year. Only two percent
were carried out after 20 weeks, ac-
cording to the National Health Service.
Abortion is illegal in Northern Ireland
except when the mothers life is in
danger or there is a serious threat to
her health.
The Royal College of Obstetricians
and Gynecologists said that lowering
the time limit would not reduce the
abortion rate, and may only drive
abortion procedures underground.
Reducing the time limit to 12
weeks would severely limit womens
choice at an extremely diffcult time
in their life, spokeswoman Dr Kate
Guthrie said

Britain which, along with Northern Ire-
land, constitutes the state known as the
United Kingdom).
Scotland gained signifcant autonomy
after voting in 1997 to set up aScottish
Parliament with substantial powers. But
Salmonds party, which has a majority
in theEdinburgh legislature, wants to go
further and make the nation of fve million
peoplean independent country within the
European Union.
Salmond has successfully marketed a
kind of aspirational nationalism a sort
of Scottish Scandinavia that accentuates
building acozy social safety net and wel-
comes Scots of all races and creeds.
He insists independence will bring
greater prosperity, allowing Scotland to
better exploit its oil, gas and other energy
resources.
But theEuropean economic crisis has
forced himto alter someof his pitch. He
oncesaid an independent Scotland would
join the euro single currency. Now he
says it would retain the pound, though
its unclear whether London would agree
to that.
QUESTIONS
Therearemany morethorny questions
raised by theprospect of separation, includ-
ing thefutureof Scotlands nuclear subma-

its European Union membership.
As in many divorces, thereis also likely
to beabattleover assets and liabilities.
The SNP says independent Scotland
would beentitled to 90 percent of revenue
fromNorth Seaoil and gas which stood
at 6.5bn in 2009-2010 but only liable
for eight percent of 1 trillion national
debt, based on Scotlands share of the
UK population. The British government
disputes that breakdown.
Pro-union politicians also claimScot-
land lacks the economic clout to go it
alone, pointing out that its two biggest
fnancial institutions, the Royal Bank of
Scotland and theBank of Scotland, arenow
largely owned by British taxpayers after
nearing collapse during the 2008 global
banking crisis.
FACTORS
Then therearefactors beyond theUKs
borders. Europes crisis is boosting break-
away movements across the continent,
fromBelgiums Dutch-speaking Flanders
to theSpanish region of Catalonia, whose
regional parliament has voted to hold a
referendumon self-determination.
I dont want independence and I
amconcerned that people will think if
Cataloniacan do it, so can we, said David
Mackenzie, an insurance salesman from
Edinburgh.
For now, the Yes campaign a
loose coalition that includes Greens and
Salmonds SNP has the momentum.
Its slick campaign effectively uses social
media such as Facebook and Twitter to
mobilizesupport.
Thepro-union Better Together cam-
paign, which includes both Camerons
Conservative Party and its arch-rival
Labour, has had alackluster start.
Political commentator and former
Labour spin doctor Simon Piasaid thepro-
union sideneeded to raiseits game.
The SNP has stolen a march with
its campaign which is very savvy and
concentrates on positivereasons to split,
hesaid.
Hesaid pro-union forces need to offer a
vision of positiveand emotional alternative
to independenceand not just focus on the
negatives of theimpact of separation.

RECENTLY, our offce has experienced a
signifcant increase in Naturalization clients.
Many of these clients meet all the require-
ments to become a citizen of the United
States and should have no problem obtain-
ing their US Citizenship. Unfortunately, not
everyones case goes as smoothly. A primary
obstacle in many cases is the ability to show
good moral character.
In order to become a citizen of the
United States, an applicant must meet
several requirements. One of those require-
ments is that you have to demonstrate good
moral character. It is hard to defne what is
good moral character as there is no one
universally accepted defnition for good
moral character. In general, to show good
moral character, you must demonstrate
your past and present behaviors are that of
a law-abiding citizen. In order to determine if
one has been law-abiding, most immigration
offcers will look to the negative to see if you
meet this requirement. If you do not meet any
of the negative points, then the immigration
offcer will likely conclude that you have met
the good moral character.
If you answer any of the below queries in
the affrmative, your good moral character
will come into question:
Have you been convicted of a crime
Naturalization And Good Moral Character
and the term of imprisonment was 180 days
or more?
Have you violated any controlled
substance law (except for one offense of
simple possession of marijuana-30 grams
or less)?
Have you been involved in prostitu-
tion?
Have you smuggled or assisted in smug-
gling illegal aliens to the United States?
Have you been a habitual drunkard?
If you are a male between the ages of
18 and 25 and did not register with the US
Selective Service Program.
That said, if you answered yes to the
any of the above questions, do not lose
hope. There are still ways to demonstrate
good moral character, so consultation with
an immigration attorney is necessary before
you start and before you give up. Each case
is different and some people have more seri-
ous issues than others. One important thing
to remember when you are flling out your
naturalization application is that you should
always be honest about your past. Lying in
an immigration application is in and of itself
demonstrates lack of good moral character.
Therefore, always be honest!

FOUR ALLEGED phonehacking victims
have fled suit against the publisher of Brit-
ains Daily Mirror newspaper, a tabloid

gan, aprominent lawyer said last month.
As far as is publicly known, thelawsuits
are the frst to hit a publication outside
Rupert Murdochs News Corp empire
and could mark thefurther expansion of a
scandal which has already tarnished abig
chunk of Britains establishment.
Mark Lewis said thenew suits had been
fled against the Trinity Mirror Group at
Britains High Court. He confrmed the
claimants identities former England
soccer coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, soc-
cer star David Beckhams family nanny
AbbieGibson, former Blackburn Rovers
soccer teamcaptain Garry Flitcroft, and
UK television actress ShobnaGulati but
gavefew other details.
Britains Judicial Offce said it had no
details on thesuits. Trinity Mirror spokes-
man Nick Fullagar did not immediately
return messages seeking comment.
Word that the Mirror now stands
accused of eavesdropping on private
voicemails may surprisefew in Britains
scandal-scarred media. Insiders have
been warning since last year that furor
over phone hacking which frst erupted
at Murdochs now-defunct News of the

to thepapers competitors. Threemonths

The lawsuits are also a potential em-

who has repeatedly denied claims that he
knew that phonehacking had taken place
at the tabloid he edited between 1995
and 2004.
Lewis declined to comment on the

GB Cycling Glory Drives Boost In Bike Sales
BRITAINS cycling success in the
London Olympic Games and the Tour
de France has put bicycle sales in a
higher gear, a leading seller revealed
last month.
Halfords Group PLC, which sells
transport and leisure accessories, said
bike sales have surged since Bradley
Wiggins in July became the frst Briton
to win the Tour de France and Chris
Hoy and Victoria Pendleton helped the
country win multiple gold medals at the
Olympics.
Halfords said its cycling division saw
same-store revenues up 14.7 percent in
the quarter to September 28 compared
with the year before. By contrast, they
were down 9.6 percent in the first
quarter.
Investors were impressed and the
companys share price jumped 14
percent.
Halfords has proved a clear benef-
ciary of British cycling success, said
Keith Bowman, equity analyst at stock-
brokers Hargreaves Lansdown.
Despite the good news, the company
remains cautious given a diffcult eco-
nomic outlook. Consumers are still
reluctant to splash out at a time when
the country remains in recession and the
government is imposing austerity mea-
sures to get a grip on public fnances.

KEEPING UP WITH BRITAINS FAVOURITE SOAP OPERAS
LAST MONTH, all Lloyd had in the world was
a job with Streetcars, a best friend called
Steve and a belting collection of Northern
Soul tunes. This month hes got a job with
Streetcars, a best mate called Steve, a belt-

daughter called Jenna. He fnds out about
Jenna after bumping into long-lost love
Mandy but cant understand why Mandys

when he fnds out that Mandys daughter
Jenna is his daughter too and it all makes
sense. Lloyd wants to get close to Jenna
and tries to impress her in the Bistro over a
posh meal and wine. But it doesnt go well
until they both fnd out theyre pie and chips
kind of people and so decamp to the Rovers
where they get on very well. But its not plain
sailing as Mandys upset at Lloyd for meeting
Jenna behind her back and Jennas not happy
with Mandy because shes trying to stop her
from meeting Lloyd. Poor Lloyds caught in
the middle with a lot to learn.
Over at the Rovers, Stellas mum, the
glorious Gloria, enters the pub into a pub of
the year competition. Theres a suggestion
box which punters post comments cards
into. Its locked, but Gloria smashes it open,
desperate to see what the customers have
written about her and the pub. But she isnt
best pleased when one of the cards says that

Vulgar and loud? Gloria?

but she eventually comes around. And while
still an irresponsible teen, shes trying to be a
good mum. And Jay is drawing closer to her.
But just as Lola says theyre just like a little

Theres more romance, of a kind, as memo-

they were working at the Weatherfeld Gazette
many years ago. Anyway, Wendy reappears
in Kens life as one of the Governors at Bes-

Creepy Kirstys been worse than ever this

at Tyrone and bruising his face, she registers
Rubys birth and the certifcate says Father

to his daughter and is in no position to chuck
Kirsty, as he was planning to do, because if
she goes, Ruby goes too and Tyrone wants
his daughter more than the world.
Michelle almost comes to blows with
Tracy Barlow whos dating her son Ryan
just to wind up Michelle and Steve. Its too
much for Michelle. Shes tried to stay calm
and she cant so she chucks Ryan out and
bars Tracy from the fat. My house! My
rules! Ryan rushes round to Tracy and tells
her hes moving in with her but this isnt
what Tracy wants, no not at all, but hes too
thick to see it.
And fnally, Marias miserable and the
only one to notice is gay fatmate Marcus.

Lauren is doing volunteer work at a

catatonic and shuffing. She runs to tell Lucy
who doesnt want to know. So Lauren gets
her Dad to get Ian and bring him back to
the Square. Clearly traumatized, he doesnt
speak. Everyone thinks its because Mandy
jilted him, but we know its because of Bens
confession to him that he killed Heather that
sent him round the twist. Everyone but us
and Phil, Ben and Jay that is. Rather than try
to get Ian psychological help, Phil wants to
keep him in that state, like a pet, so he cant

Denise asks Shirley over to show her
pictures Carly sent of her new baby, but
while there, Denise sees the picture frame
that Kim bought for Denise at the charity
shop the frame that Ben was supposed to
get rid of and she recognizes it and goes
berserk and into sleuth mode. Though how
Shirley (AKA Columbo) was able to jump to
the correct conclusion that the picture frame
was the murder weapon, well never know.
But now shes hot it and shes like a dog with
a bone trying to connect it to the real killer. At
frst she assumes its Phil (naturally), but in a
confrontation with Ben he lets slip too much
info and she realizes its him. Phil comes
home and tries to convince Shirley to protect
Ben, but Ben goes and turns himself in. Thats
when DI Marsden comes in and refuses to
believe his story. After much back and forth
and the help of a detective with exceeding
squeaky shoes, they get to the bottom of it
and Ben is charged with murder and remains
in custody, while Jay is charged with pervert-
ing the course of justice and bailed, returning
to the Square as a reviled outcast.

Prince Charles Letters To Govt To Stay Secret
NO, YOU cannot read PrinceCharles let-
ters to British government offcials.
Attorney General Dominic Grieve
overruled a court ruling last month that
thepublic had aright to seewhat sort of
advicetheopinionated princewas offering
to thegovernment.
Grieve says many of the letters are
particularly frank and could compromise
the publics perception of Charles as a
politically neutral fgure.
Britains constitutional monarch has no
political power, but meets regularly with
primeministers and other senior politicians
to talk about events of theday.
Grievedecided that theprinces letter-
writing was part of his preparation to suc-
ceed his mother, theQueen to thethrone.

Spy Kids: UK Starts Secret Agent Apprenticeships
By Jill Lawless
HOWS THIS for a job title secret
agents apprentice?
The British government is recruiting
teenage apprentice spies and codebreak-
ers without university degrees in a bid to
deepen the talent pool of its intelligence
services for the era of cyberterorrism
and cyberwarfare.
Foreign Secretary William Hague
announced the program last month in
a speech at Bletchley Park, Britains
World War II code-breaking head-
quarters.
Young people are the key to our
countrys future success, just as they
were during the war, Hague said.
It will be the young innovators of
this generation who will help keep our
country safe in years to come against
threats which are every bit as serious as
some of those confronted in the Second
World War.
The Foreign Offce said the apprentice-
ship program aims to fnd up to 100 new
recruits for GCHQ Britains electronic
surveillance agency and the MI5 and
MI6 and intelligence services. The idea
is to expand recruitment of spies beyond
the traditional method of a discreet tap
on the shoulder at university.
BACKGROUNDS
The program will be open to bright
18-year-olds with backgrounds in sci-
ence, technology, engineering and even
computer gaming. They will undergo a
two-year course of university classes,
technical training and work placements
before starting full-time jobs.
High-school students will also be
invited to take part in a national ci-
pher challenge competition intended
to inspire pupils to consider careers in
mathematics and cybersecurity.
The Foreign Offce said the goal was
to harness the expertise of its young
people, who have grown up with a world
of social media, global connectivity and
interactive gaming, to make sure we can
tackle the threats and challenges of the
21st century.
Hague also said the government was
donating 480,000 toward restoration of
Bletchley Park, a complex of buildings
and wooden huts northwest of London
where hundreds of mathematicians,
cryptologists, crossword puzzle experts
and computer pioneers worked to crack
Nazi Germanys secret codes. Histo-
rians say their work shortened World
War II by as much as two years.
Bletchley Parks
guardians are fund-
raising to restore the
site and turn it into a
museum.

HALFWAY THROUGH the life of this parlia-
ment, the autumn party political conferences
revealed a sense of urgency kicking in as the
parties jockeyed for position.
The United Kingdom Independence Party
(Ukip) were frst up. They are currently polling
about seven percent. Not a signifcant force
then for a party described by David Cameron
in 2006 as fruitcakes, loonies and closet rac-
ists, mostly. Despite that they came second
behind Labour in the 2009 Euro elections and
are level-pegging in the polls with the Liberal
Democrats.
They exert a powerful infuence on the
Conservative Party, mainly because they
represent commitment to getting Britain out
of Europe. Frankly it is amazing that they are
at all opposed to the European Union since
they are well rewarded in salary and expense
terms: the 13 current Ukip MEPs had received
in the last three years 13m for virtual non-
attendance and almost total non-voting.
But now they are regarded as a deposi-
tory for disaffected Tory and Lib Dem votes.
They have more or less forced Cameron into
conceding he will hold a referendum on EU
membership following the next General Elec-
tion. Whether they have a long-term serious
future is debatable. The party organisers for
the beneft of their TV image actively tried to
ensure they had young people sitting on the
front row of the audience. They could only
fnd four.
LIB DEMS
The Lib Dems held their conference the
same week in Brighton. It was prefaced by
a party political broadcast from Nick Clegg
seen as the blond across the water, Cam-
erons only heir and if many Tories had their
way, his immediate replacement.
It will not happen but the Prime Minister
was thrust into the shadows by the entry of
his hugely popular friend.
Nevertheless, Cameron rallied the ranks
with a fne speech where he proved to his
own satisfaction that despite suffering from
a privileged background, it was hard work
that enabled him to succeed. Without once
referring to Eton (his school), he affrmed
that he wanted every child to have that sort
of education he had had and enjoy the same
privilege as him. A slightly unlikely prospect
Nothing Is Quite What It Seems In The Party Conference Season
who concentrated on
apologising for pledg-
ing to keep students
tuition fees down. So
entertaining was his
apology that it was
set to music by an in-
ternet company and
released as a single.
He was praised for
his frankness even
though it was later
revealed he apologised for making the pledge,
not for breaking it. To most the niceties of
such hair-splitting eluded them.
Cleggs message to his party boiled down
to urging them to hang on in there, that joining
a coalition with the Tories was the bravest
thing they would have done at a critical
moment in the nations history. Historians
looking back on this period may deem the
Lib-Dems to have done the right thing. Sadly
for Clegg it is the current generation of disil-
lusioned voters who have the vote.
LABOUR PARTY
Ed Miliband and the Labour Party con-
vened the following week in Manchester. Ed
is Labours biggest problem and he deliber-
ately set about brushing up his image. This
culminated in a magnifcent speech to the
conference lasting 70 minutes using neither
teleprompter nor notes. It was a genuine tour
de force thrilling the faithful and stunning
opponents.
Though it was a moment hailed by just
about every commentator as the highlight of
the conference season, his personal popu-
larity appeared to have budged upwards by
not one jot. Sad, really. Eds problem is that
he is frmly established in the public mind as
a nerd leading a party that was responsible
for the fnancial mess we are now in. That
perception is a propaganda triumph secured
by David Cameron and Nick Clegg during
the past two years of coalition government.
They are always reiterating that whatever they
are doing is to clear up the fnancial mess
caused by the Labour Party. Until Miliband
can defeat that argument, he will never
form a government however many brilliant
speeches he gives.
CONSERVATIVES
All of which brings us to the Conservative
Conference in Birmingham.
Lets face it, Cameron is not popular with
the electorate. These are hard times fnan-
cially, with money buying less, cutbacks in
public services, the economy in recession
and no end in sight. This year he was saddled
with the behaviour of his recently-promoted
Chief Whip, Andrew Mitchell. He had sworn
at a police offcer in Downing Street, styling
him according to the policemans notes a
f****** pleb. Mitchell denies using the
words he is accused of and has apologised
for swearing, with the policeman having ac-
cepted it. For all that, Mitchell, Birminghams
only Tory MP stayed away from the confer-
ence to avoid causing a distraction.
Cameron managed to rise above every-
thing apart from the contribution of Boris
Johnson, Londons Mayor the only Tory
since 1992 (John Major) who has succeeded
in winning in a major election. He is widely
given the cost of an Eton education.
SCOTTISH INDEPENDENCE
Immediately after the conference closed,
Cameron met Scotlands First Minister, Alec
Salmond and fnalised arrangements for the
Scottish Independence vote. It will take place
in autumn 2014, the 700th anniversary of
the Battle of Bannockburn when Robert the
Bruce routed the English under Edward II to
win freedom for the Scots.
Salmond agreed that the vote would be
a simple yes or no, in or out Scottish or
British. Cameron conceded that the voting
age would be extended downwards so that
16-year-olds could vote. That generation of
disenfranchised voters who made Jedward
stars in the X Factor. Salmond argued that
youngsters should be allowed to vote since it
was their future they were voting for. It makes
you wonder what election is ever not about
the future and therefore why everyone includ-
ing unborn babies does not have the vote.
One obvious outcome of this agreement is
that it is pretty certain that in all elections the
vote will be given to all 16-year-olds before
long without further need for discussion. For
his part, Salmond is content to enfranchise
this generation since he feels confdent that
given their lack of political awareness they
will vote for him and independence.
What a way to end three hundred years of
a United Kingdom should his ploy succeed!

Tory Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell
WARNING!! What Im going to say here wont
affect people who are tax residents in the US.
Put simply, if you fle a 1040 form, this will
not apply to you! But since UJ has readers
with either holiday homes or investment
property here, this will, hopefully, be of use
and interest to them.
When you sell a US property as a non-
resident person, you have to pay US tax on
any gain. Most countries have a similar law,
so the country where the land or property is
has the frst taxing rights. The UK is unusual
in only assessing residents to capital gains
tax (which is often to our advantage once we
are living here!)
Way back in the 1970s, the US was aware
of foreigners buying property and became
concerned that when people sold, and took
the proceeds back to their home country,
they would have little incentive to fle a US tax
return and pay US tax. From the US govern-
ments point of view, this was defnitely not a
good thing. A law was introduced, known as
FIRPTA (Foreign Investment in Real Property
Tax Act of 1980), under which 10 percent
of the sale proceeds are withheld and paid
to the IRS on account of tax on the capital
gain of a foreign seller. You did read that
right, its 10 percent of the sale proceeds,
not 10 percent of any gain! And if you are a
foreign seller, it applies even if you made a
loss on the sale.
There are some circumstances when it
does not apply. The main one is if a property
sells for under $300,000 and the purchaser is
intending to use the property as a residence
for themselves or their family. If the purchaser
is a company or other entity you cannot meet
this requirement no matter what the sales
price is, and you will suffer the withholding.
Is there anything a seller can do? You can
make an application to the IRS to reduce the
amount of the withheld tax, even if appropri-
ate, to zero. This application must be made
before the sale closes, because the seller
must notify the person dealing with the title
transfer, and your buyer, that you have made
this application. And you cant make it in
advance, because you need the details of
your buyer. So there is often a small window
for getting this done!
It can take three months for the IRS to
consider an application and issue a decision.
Once they have done this, the person hold-
ing the funds must transfer to the IRS within
twenty days, the portion they have decided
they should receive, and the balance can be
released to the seller.
Having made this application does not
remove the requirement for a seller to fle a
non-resident tax return for the year of sale,
and they will then be able to claim back any
additional amount of tax paid.
This procedure can have a considerable
impact on people selling one property and
thinking they will use the proceeds to buy
another. Unexpectedly losing 10 percent of
the sale proceeds can make quite a difference
in these circumstances!

NORTHERN IRELAND police say

Belfast.
Police evacuated about 30 homes
during the alert in the Ardoyne dis-

The Irish nationalist Sinn Fein
party condemned those responsible
as disconnected from reality. They
urged all factions to join the cease-fre
observed since 1997 by the major IRA
faction, the Provisionals.
The Provisionals renounced vio-

al small IRA splinter groups continue
to mount occasional bomb and gun
attacks, chiefy targeting police.
Police have described the bomb as
substantial in size and capable of
killing nearby residents. British Army
experts safely dismantled it.

Unemployment Falls, But Record
Number Of Part-Time Workers
THE federal government in the US
has apparently ended a 433-year-old
historical controversy by determining
that English sea captain and explorer
Sir Francis Drake came ashore in what
is now a county in the San Francisco
Bay area when he claimed California
for England.
For years, some historians and other
scholars said Drake landed on the Point
Reyes Peninsula, north of San Francisco,
in Marin County.
But others pointed to what they con-
sidered evidence that Drake landed in lo-
cations ranging from San Francisco Bay
to Alaska, Oregon, British Columbia or
other sites along the California coast.
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar
apparently ended the controversy last
month when he designated the Drake
site as Point Reyes in Marin County
as one of 27 spots nationwide that are
national historic or natural landmarks,
the San Francisco Chronicle reported
last month.
There never was any dispute that
Drake had sailed his ship, the Golden
Hind, north along the Pacifc Coast.

Afghanistan In 2013
BRITAINS defense secretary says
thousands of troops will leaveAfghani-

forces there.
Britain has said 500 of its 9,500
troops in Afghanistan will be with-
drawn this year, and all will bebrought
homeby theend of 2014, when inter-
national troops aredueto hand security
over to Afghan forces.
DefenseSecretary Philip Hammond
said last month that he planned a
signifcant reduction in force numbers
by theend of next year.
He told the BBC that thousands,
not hundreds of troops would be
withdrawn latein 2013, but I would
not expect it to bethemajority of our
forces.
Since2001, 433 British troops have
died in Afghanistan.
to repair his ship, his crew nailed a plate
of brass to a tree claiming the land for
Queen Elizabeth.
But the descriptions of the harbor
where Drake landed were vague, spark-
ing debates by historians. Some said
he landed as far north in what is now
Alaska, while others said that area he
described was what is now San Diego.
The Drake Navigators Guild, a North-
ern California organization of historians,
said it has more than 50 detailed clues
about the landing, including 16th-centu-
ry reports, identifying Drakes Cove, an
inlet near the larger Drakes Bay, as the
site where Sir Francis Drake landed.
The Point Reyes claim, as submit-
ted by the guild, had more evidence
than any other possible site, said John
DellOsso, chief of interpretation at Point
Reyes National Seashore.

VACUUM powerhouse Dyson fled legal
proceedings last month against Bosch in
Britains High Court, accusing its German
rival of having obtained corporatesecrets
through amolewithin ahigh-security re-
search and development department.
Dyson, known for its popular bagless
vacuumcleaner, claims that arogueengi-
neer working in its facility in Malmesbury
for Dyson digital motors was handing
information on secret motor technology
to Bosch for up to two years.
Dyson has confronted Bosch with evi-
denceof wrongdoing but it has refused to
return thetechnology. Nor has it promised
not to use the technology for its beneft,
forcing Dyson to take legal action, the
company said in astatement.
Dyson alleges that Bosch paid themole
through an unincorporated business creat-
ed solely for that purposeand that Boschs
vice president, Wolfgang Hirschburger,
was awareof theengineers work.
Mark Taylor, Dyson Research and
Development director, said that Bosch
had benefted from Dysons know-how
and expertise.
We have spent over 15 years and
100mdeveloping high-speed brushless
motors, which power our vacuumcleaners
and Airblade hand dryers, he said in a
statement. Wearedemanding theimme-
diatereturn of our intellectual property.
Bosch disputed someof thefacts. It said
in astatement that Dyson had employed an
individual with apre-existing consultancy
agreement with Bosch Lawn and Garden
Ltd in relation to garden products and
not vacuumcleaners or hand dryers as
Dyson implies.
The company expressed regret that
Dyson has pursued legal action, saying it
has been trying to establish what happened
and what, if any, confdential informa-
tion was supposedly passed between the
companies.
UNMARRIED and same-sex couples
in Northern Ireland should be al-
lowed to adopt children, a Belfast
judge ruled last month, rejecting a
1987 adoption law that discriminates
against both groups.
Gay rights activists praised the rul-
ing in favor of a lawsuit pursued by
the Northern Ireland Human Rights
Commission. But Health Minister Ed-
win Poots, an evangelical Protestant
opposed to gay partnerships, said the
government would appeal.
It is my intention to urgently ap-
peal this judgment and I am taking
this action with a heavy heart, said
Poots, who called the ruling against
the best interests of children.
Belfast High Court Justice Seamus
Treacy ruled the law clearly violated
European human rights laws on pri-
vacy and discrimination.
Other parts of the United King-
dom already permit gay and unmar-
ried heterosexual couples to adopt
children. But Northern Irelands
law restricts applicants to married
couples and single adults, includ-
ing gays.
Northern Irelands chief com-
missioner for human rights, Mi-
chael OFlaherty, said the successful
lawsuit sought to protect the best
interests of the child. Given the high
numbers of children in care, who
need a family in Northern Ireland,
the importance of this case in widen-
ing the pool of prospective parents
cannot be overstated.
More than 2,500 children in North-
ern Ireland are in state care awaiting
adoption.

n ST AUGUSTINE every December.
Before the Yanks booted us out, the British
had an especially large presence in Florida
and in fact, unlike other states, did not seek
independence. The British Night Watch is an
historic reenactment commemorating the
British Period of St Augustine, 1763 to 1783.
The main feature is the Grande Illumination
Parade, a ceremony then used on special
occasions and Holidays. Every night, the
town was secured by guards locking the city
gates, but on special occasions, it was made
festive by involving the community in a candle
or lantern lit parade that ended with musket
volleys, singing, and much merriment. In
2012, locals are encouraged to join in and
march behind uniformed British Redcoats.
Theres a festival and vendors too, so make
a night of it, bring your candles and wave

n KNOWN FOR OUR stiff upper lip, heres
the origin of the slogan that inspires us Brits
still. Keep Calm and Carry On: World War II
and the British Home Front, 1938-1951 is the
exhibition in West Palm Beach running No-
vember 1 to January 20, 2013 at the Norton
Museum. (See ad this issue) When the British
government produced the poster Keep Calm
and Carry On in 1939, it was a rallying cry
for the public, and a demonstration of a new
collaboration between the government and
the creative class. This special exhibition
explores the ways in which artists, designers,
architects, and flmmakers in Great Britain
bolstered a nation and helped win the war
on the home front. Virtually every member
of Englands creative class, from fashion
designer Hardy Amies to arts leader Kenneth
Clark and writer Noel Coward, helped fght
the war at home. Included are objects and
images from the 1946 Britain Can Make It
exhibition at Londons Victoria and Albert, the
1948 Olympics, the 1948 Earls Court Auto
Show, and the 1951 Festival of Britain. Also
on Sunday January 13, Barry Day, a Fellow
of the Royal Society of the Arts and Trustee
of the Noel Coward Foundation, will recall
growing up in England during the Blitz. For

So sad that Floridas once-abundant British
pubs are struggling, closing or sold on and
repurposed by a new American owner. Times
change, their heyday was in the 90s when
Brits had to fock there as the only means
of watching the footers so they advertised
in this paper. My offce has a physical fle on
every British pub that ever existed in Florida
and the CLOSED list reaches two feet high.

Coe To Become British
Olympic Association Chairman
JUST MONTHS after successfully run-
ning theLondon Games, Sebastian Coeis
moving into another high-profle Olympic
job.
Thetwo-timeOlympic middle-distance
champion will become chairman of the
British Olympic Association after his only
challenger withdrew last month.
Richard Leman, head of Britains feld
hockey federation, said he was pulling
out in favor of the person who led the
organization and delivery of what is widely
regarded as themost successful Olympic
and Paralympic Games in history.
The BOA will officially elect Coe
on November 7. He will replace Colin
Moynihan, who is stepping down after
seven years as chairman.
Coe is also a vice president of the
International Association of Athletics
Federations.
And if the volcano does explode the land west
of the fault will rupture and that will send 500
billion tons of land into the ocean causing a
tsunami never seen in our lifetimes.
In comes Scott Adler, a CIA agent. He sus-
pects that terrorists are involved in a plot to
cause the volcano to erupt but no one wants
to believe him as he was the one who said
they were WMDs (weapons of mass destruc-
tion) previously when none were found.
It is a roller coaster ride as the story
unfolds and it weaves in and out with the
different characters and their minders. The
Americans and the British are forced to work
together in the end and the ensuing conversa-
tions between the female head of MI6 and the
US are quite amusing.
Pick this one up! I rate it right up there
with other great espionage writers such as
Ken Follett and great storytellers like John
Grisham! I cant wait to read the next one!
Only one warning with this book if you
do pick it up you wont want to put it down
until you have fnished it!!

The Kitchen is the heart of the
home; The cook is the soul
I RECENTLY returned from a trip to England
with my dear friend Penny, to celebrate 50
years of friendship, very special. We met
in Hitchin, my home town both applying
for a receptionist position at The Sun Hotel,
Penny missed her train to go back to Dorset,
and I invited her to stay over and she
stayed a year! We both married Americans
and came over different times, and lived
different places, but we have always been
glued to the hip, a very close friendship,
it was a joy to celebrate together.
I hadnt been back for fve years, but it
didnt seem like it, did pretty well with the
driving too, although had to really concen-
trate with the roundabouts! The weather
was appalling, in fact we had to buy coats
the second day we were so cold, thank
goodness for the charity shops! However
the foods and drinks were outstanding
so that helped compensate.
The majority of our meals were in pubs,
and I cant say we had a bad meal at any
of them. There defnitely has been a shift
in the improvement of meals and variety,
much more emphasis on fresh and organic,
and you can really taste the difference. I of
course kept a food diary, and would like to
share some of the choices we had, I ate as
much fsh as possible as it was always so
fresh, and was never disappointed, those
fsh and chips may have been usurped
a bit as a favourite for a while with curry
overtaking, but the chippy is still a frm part
of the community, luverly with lashings of
malt vinegar and mushy peas. Starters
were wonderful I often had 2-3- instead of
an entre, and the soups were souper
(sorry!) Choices there included carrot and
orange, coriander, potato Leek, Broccoli
and Blue cheese, Parsnip and Porcini mush-
room, and Pumpkin (a version of which I
plan to feature this column). Although I had
a couple of ploughmans, a popular thing
now is the board, which is basically the
same thing with bread, relish and pickle,
but instead of just wonderful cheeses,
(they were great too) I had one that was
seafood, with smoked mackerel, salmon,
anchovies and prawns in crme fraiche, and
another which was a British game Board
featuring partridge, pheasant, venison etc.
Very good. I had roast lamb twice, one was
featuring Romney Marsh lamb (in Rye)
which was so tender and sweet, and then
Welsh lamb cooked to perfection by my
friend Margaret, and we were licking our
fngers with that one! Desserts were also a
treat; I pretty much had the traditional ones
with crumbles, pies and custard or cream. I
found it interesting also that coffee choices
included lattes and cappuccinos of course
but the most popular is the Americano,
which is regular coffee served with hot milk
not sure how that got called that. The
last splurge we had was a champagne tea
at The Grand Hotel in Eastbourne, so very
elegant and with fnesse, the weather was
raining and blowing and chilly but we felt
we were in a cocoon nestled in the deep
armchairs sipping champers, then teas.
I had Darjeeling for a change.
I do feel I want to put a plug in here
though. Penny and I stayed in fve different
places during the two weeks, but the best
was the last. My oldest friend Margaret (we
were in school together) has a bed and
breakfast in East Sussex, and it is heaven,
lovely snuggling comfort beds, ambience,
gardens, house, hospitality etc. if you want
a real piece of English country life, I heartily
recommend her place, please look her up at
her web site www.netherwoodlodge.co.uk
and if you plan to be in that area I know it
would be worth your while, she is right near
Glynbourne.
So, I consider myself very blessed to
have such a wonderful circle of friends,
and to have four best friends, but this trip
was extra special being with my two oldest,
I never take that for granted.
When we lived in Wisconsin and had
a huge garden, we used to grow our own
pumpkins, and although the end result was
terrifc, it truly was a pain to peel, chop,
cook, mash etc etc, nowadays I just buy the
plain canned (tinned) pumpkin, no season-
ing or spices, sooo much easier! Hope you
enjoy my version, it was always a popular
choice in Autumn in the Tea room.

The i sl and of La
Palma in the middle of
the Atlantic Ocean is a
ticking time bomb. A
fault line runs through
it that, if it ruptures, will
case a tsunami that will
devastate the eastern
seaboard of the United
States.
This is defnitely one of the best books Ive
read for a long time. It keeps you turning the
pages to fnd out what happens next! Tom
Delaney and his longtime girlfriend, Jane
Simons, are both experts on tsunamis and
volcanoes. They are offered the chance to
conduct research on La Palma to inspect the
fault line and the volcanoes on the island.
They jump at the chance and it all starts
there. When they get to the island things
start happening that dont make any sense.
Professor Golding (from the British University
that sponsored them) has already done this
research and didnt fnd a problem. They meet
one of the locals and he warns them that the
bad spirits are back and is worried the island
is going to explode. The townspeople think
hes crazy but Tom and Jane are not so sure
after they discover that the fault line is huge!

Prince Roy Of
Sealand Roy Bates
Dead At 91
PADDY ROY BATES, who occupied
an abandoned fort in the North Sea
and declared it the sovereign Princi-
pality of Sealand with himself as its
prince has died at age 91.
Bates son Michael says his father
died at a care home in Leigh-on-Sea
in eastern England. He had been suf-
fering from Alzheimers.
In the 1960s, Bates moved with
his family to a disused World War II
fort about seven miles off Englands
east coast. He proclaimed it the
Principality of Sealand, with himself
as Prince Roy.
Bates gave Sealand its own fag,
passport, stamps, coins and national
anthem. It claimed to be the worlds
smallest sovereign state, though it was
not internationally recognized.
Bates is survived by his wife Joan,
son Michael and daughter Penny.

Acclaimed Session Guitarist Big Jim Sullivan Dies
British Historian Eric Hobsbawm Dies
ERIC HOBSBAWM, who has died aged
95, was honored as oneof Britains most
distinguished historians, despiteretaining
an allegianceto theCommunist Party that
lasted long after many supporters had left
in disgust.
Daughter Julia Hobsbawm said: Hed
been quietly fghting leukemia for a num-
ber of years without fuss or fanfare, she
said. Right up until theend hewas keep-
ing up what hedid best, hewas keeping
up with current affairs. Therewas astack
of newspapers by his bed.
Hobsbawms reading of Karl Marx and
his experience living in Germany in the
1930s formed his views. He joined the
Communist Party in England in 1936 and
stayed amember long after Soviet military
force crushed the Hungarian uprising in
1956 and theliberal reforms of thePrague
Spring in 1968, although hepublicly op-
posed both interventions.
Hobsbawmis best known for three
volumes, spanning theperiod from1789
to 1914: The Age of Revolution (1962),
The Age of Capital (1975) and The Age of
Empire (1987). A later volume, Ageof
Extremes, took the story forward from
1914 to 1991.
His last book, How to Change the
World, published in 2011, was not a
revolutionary tract but a collection of
essays dating back to the1960s on Marx
and Marxism.
ACCLAIMED session guitarist Big Jim
Sullivan who played on dozens of hits
in the 1960s and 1970s has died. He
was 71.
WifeNormasaid that Sullivan had died
at their home in West Sussex, England,
on. He suffered fromheart disease and
diabetes.
Sullivan learned guitar as a teenager
and turned professional when hewas just
16. He played with many of the biggest
names in British pop at theheight of the
Swinging London era.
Along with Jimmy Page, who would
later star in Led Zeppelin, Sullivan was
oneof themost in-demand session guitar-
ists of his era. His websitelists sessions

FIGURES show that in 2010, the age-
standardised mortality rates in the UK
for males and females were655 and 467
deaths per 100,000 population respec-
tively, thelowest rates ever recorded.
Within theUK thereis somevariation
in mortality rates between the constitu-
ent countries. In 2010, Scotland had the
highest mortality rates for both males and
females, 785 and 552 deaths per 100,000
population respectively, whereas England
had thelowest rates for males and females,
638 and 456 deaths per 100,000 population
respectively.
Northern Ireland has experienced the
largest declines in mortality for both
males (51 per cent) and females (43 per
cent) since 1980. In contrast males and
females in Scotland haveshown thesmall-
est declines in mortality rates over thelast
30 years at 44 per cent and 35 per cent
respectively.
But therewerestill signs of anational
dividewith peoplein thenorth morelike-
ly to die earlier than those in the affuent
south. Mortality rates in Manchester were
32 per cent above the national average,
whilein South Cambridgeshirethey were
26 per cent below. The variations could
beexplained by socio-economic, income
differences and health behaviour, the
ONS said.
Cancer accounted for threeout of ten
deaths, though thenumber has fallen in the
past decade, and circulatory diseases, such
as heart diseaseand strokes, accounted for
29 per cent of deaths.
Thechild mortality rateroselast year,
from4.3 deaths per thousand to 4.4.
Meanwhile, thefertility ratenow stands
at 1.93 children per woman with 723,913
live births last year, up 0.1 per cent on
2010s 723,165.
Throughout recent years, UK mortality
rates have generally fallen due to medi-
cal advances in the treatment of various
illnesses and diseases, illustrated by the
reduction in age-standardised mortality
rates for many causes of death. In recent
years circulatory diseases, as a cause of
death, have seen the greatest fall in age
standardised mortality within theUK.
Between 1980 and 2010 age-standardised
mortality rates for males and females have
declined by 48 per cent and 39 per cent
respectively. Malemortality rates havebeen
higher than females throughout the30 year
period, but because rates for males have
fallen at afaster rate, thegap between male
and femalemortality has decreased.

GIVEN ROYAL approval by Prince William
and wife Kate, English footballs new head-
quarters were offcially opened October 9 to
boost hopes that one of the sports serial
underperformers can soon close the gap to
the worlds top teams.
Thirty-seven years in the making, the
100m national football center at Burton-
upon-Trent in central England will be the
permanent home for all 24 of Englands
senior and junior teams as well as a training
base for aspiring coaches.
France and Spain became world cham-
pions a decade after building their national
academies and England, whose only major
trophy was won at the 1966 World Cup on
home soil, is targeting the same result.
Coming here and seeing these wonderful
facilities gives the same feeling as when I

It gives me great pride we have created

Facilities were developed after extensive

Europeans Retain Ryder Cup
The 39
th
Ryder Cup encounter between
the Americans and the Europeans at the
Medinah Country Club, Illinois, September
25-October 1, hinged once again on the third
and last day of play; the twelve match-play
singles. The United States have won just
two of the last eight encounters with the
Europeans in the Ryder Cup, but got off to
a good start and were 5-3 up after the frst
day of play. Rory McIIroy and Graeme Mc-
Dowell, plus the pairings of Ian
Poulter and Justin Rose won
their foursomes, and Lee West-
wood and Nicolas Colsaerts
won a fourball. On the second
day, the fery and focused Ian
Poulter, won with Justin Rose
again in the morning and in the
afternoon with Rory McIIroy,
but the Americans still stretched
their lead to 10-6, over the Europeans The
fnal day of singles showed the Europeans
at their best, and they took eight and a half
points from a possible twelve to retain the
Ryder Cup with a winning total of fourteen
and a half points to thirteen and a half. Ian
Poulter, was likened to a cross between Rod
Stewart and Sid Vicious, by an American
television golf commentator for his tenacity,
but proved the star of the European side
winning all of his matches.
Justin Rose won the eight-man invitational
World Golf fnal in Turkey, October 12, win-
ning all his fve games, culminating in beating
Lee Westwood by a stroke in the fnal. Tiger
Woods beat Rory McIIroy in the quarter-fnals
by a stroke, but was ousted by Rose in the
semi-fnal, by a similar margin. Rose col-
lected a cool $1.5m for his victory.
Heather Watson Wins In Japan,
Laura Robson Getting Better
Heather Watson became the frst Briton
to win a WTA event in 26 years, after claim-
ing a 7-5, 5-7,7-6 (7-5), victory over Chang
Kai-Chen of Chinese Taipei in the Ladies
Japan Open, October 14. Chang had previ-
ously knocked out Laura Robson, in the
third round. Watson beat Polona Herzog
(Slovenia), Zhou Yi-Miao (China), Pauline
Parmentier (Fr), Anabel Medina-Garrigues
(Sp), and Misaki Doe of Japan in the semi-
fnal, to go on and claim the biggest victory
of her career. The 20-year-old from Guern-
sey, spent time at Nick Bolletteris tennis
academy in Florida as a youngster and is
ranked 71
st
in the world. Sara Gomez was
the last British player to win a WTA event,
back in 1988.
A couple of weeks earlier, Laura Robson
became the frst British woman in a WTA fnal
in 22 years when she faced Su-Wei-Hsleh, in
the Guangzhou Open in China. The teenager
won an Olympic silver medal with Andy Mur-
ray in the mixed doubles, and is ranked 74
th

in the world. Nerves played a part in a tight
result as the Taiwanese player claimed the
title 6-3, 5-7,6-4. Later at the China Open, the
18-year-old Robson, attempted to move into
the top ffty world rankings, but was thwarted
by Lourdes Dominguez of Spain, who beat
her 7-5, 6-3, in the second round.
Djokovic Beats Murray In
Shanghai Final
Britains new US Open Champion Andy
Murray, returned to the courts looking to
retain his Japanese Open title. He beat Ivo
Karlic (Croatia) Luka Lacko (Slovakia)
Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, before
losing to Milos Raonic in the semi-fnals. The
Canadian was not over-awed by the Scots
recent Grand Slam success and won 6-3, 6-7
(5-7)7-6 (7-4). Novak Djokovic took revenge
for his recent US Open defeated at the hands
of Murray, and beat the Scot in the fnal of the
Shanghai Masters, October 14, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3.
Murray had a bye in the frst round, a walkover
in the second, before eliminating Alexandr
Dolgopolov (Ukr), Radek Stepanek (Czech),
and Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-
fnals. An injury saw Murrays withdrawal
from the Swiss Indoors Championship.
David Price & Ricky Burns
Retain Their Edge
Liverpools David Price (14-0) retained
his British and Commonwealth heavyweight
titles at Liverpools Echo Arena, October
13, with a complete demolishing of chal-
lenger Audley Harrison (28-6) in the frst
round. A capacity partisan crowd saw Price
catch Harrison with an early haymaker that
left the former Olympic medalist unable to
defend himself. The ref stopped it after just
one minute and 22 seconds, as the crowd
vocalized their disappointment with a chorus
of boos. On the under-card, former British,
Commonwealth and European heavyweight
champion Matt Skelton (28-7) in the process
of a comeback, knocked out Jakov Gospic of
Croatia in the second round. The 45-year-old
Skelton, a former kick-boxing champion is
expected to be Prices next opponent. Same
weekend in Glow, Kent, former Olympic gold
medalist James Degale (13-1) retained his
European super-middleweight crown with a
unanimous decision over Hadillah Mohou-
madi (13-3-1), the French champion.
Late September, Scotlands Ricky Burns
was too much of a powerhouse for challenger
Kevin Mitchell in Glasgow, where the WBO
lightweight champion retained his title after
the ref stopped it in the fourth round. The
Coatbridge (34-2) champions mounting
aggression had the Essex fghter (33-2) down
twice in the fourth. On the under card, former
two time WBO featherweight champion Scott
Harrison (27-2-2) continued his comeback
after a six year hiatus with a points win over
late stand-in, Joe Elfdh of Nottingham.
Leanda Cave Is The Iron- Lady,
Jonny Brownlee Claims The World
Triathlon Crown
Britains Leanda Cave captured the world
crown at the World Ironman Championships
in Hawaii, October 14. She completed the 2.4
mile swim, the 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2
mile marathon in nine hours, 15 minutes and
54 seconds, fnishing one minute ahead of
her nearest rival. Born in Louth, Lincolnshire,
the 34-year-old Briton, lives and trains in Tuc-
son, Arizona. She started running triathlons
some dozen years ago before later moving on
to the more stamina and endurance sapping
ironman contests. Two days later, Jonny
Brownlee replaced his elder brother Alistair
(who was having surgery) as the new World
Triathlon Champion after being runner up in
the fnal race in the World ITU eight races
series in Auckland. The 22-year-old Olympic
bronze medalist, needed a top three fnish in
New Zealand to claim the glory. He fnished
90pts behind Javiar Gomez of Spain, but it
was enough to give him the world title.
Jockey Hughes Wins Seven Races
In One Day
Irish jockey Richard Hughes won seven
of the eight races at Windsor Racecourse
last month, a feat that commanded odds
of 10,168-1.
Bookmaker Paddy Power says Hughes
cost the firm about 750,000, with one
person winning 85,000.
Jockey Frankie Dettori won seven out of
seven races in one day at Ascot in 1996.
Kate Miller, a spokeswoman for book-
maker William Hill said: Were very grateful
that Richard timed his on a quiet Monday.
Well pay out around 100,000 but the fgure
could easily have been 10 times that if hed
chosen this Saturday instead.
French jockey Olivier Peslier, claimed his
fourth Prix larc de Triomphe. October 6. The
richest horse race in Europe is run over one
mile and three furlongs at Longchamps, and
attracts quality thoroughbreds from around
the world. Peslier overcame Japanese trained
Orfevre (5-1) on the line by a neck, claiming
a shock victory on Solemia, a 33-1 shot.
American trained Masterstroke (11-1) was
third, seven lengths distant.18 ran.
Motor Racing
Sebastian Vettel forged ahead of Fer-
nando Alonso in the Formula One drivers
table, after three consecutive victories. The
German, who drives for the Red Bull team,
won the Singapore GP late September, the
Japanese GP, October 7, and the Korean
Grand Prix, October 14. Vettel leads the
championship with 215pts with Alonso
chasing 209pts. Only bit of British good
news, was Jensen Buttons second place
fnish at Singapore.
World Cup 2014; England Top Group
A series of world cup qualifers took place
October 12 and 16, which saw the England
captaincy temporarily in the hands of Wayne
Rooney as England took on Euro minnows
San Marino at Wembley. Rooney put England
on the way to a 5-0 victory, starting with
a penalty in the 35
th
minute, and putting
another one away in the 69
th
minute. Danny
Welbeck got a brace too, while Alex Oxlade-
Chamberlain made it fve. The second game
in Poland, was postponed for a day because
of a water-logged pitch, and the second night
in a hotel did go down well with the players
who put in an under par performance at
Warsaw for a 1-1 tie. Wayne Rooney found
the Polish net in the 31
st
minute,(his 32
nd
goal
for England ) but the Poles came back in the
71
st
minute after Kamil Glik leveled the game.
England top Group H, with eight points after
four games, one ahead of Montenegro.
Scotland & Wales World Cup
Hopes Shaken
Scotland have not won in Cardiff since
1983, and this encounter did not change
the record as Welsh coach Chris Coleman,
reaped his frst victory in fve games as Wales
new manager watch his side win 2-1. A small
crowd of 23,000 witnessed James Morrison,
put the Scots ahead in the 27
th
minute, but
Gareth Bale came back with a penalty in the
81
st
minute, and scored again, one minute
from the end. Belgium is regarded as the
most improved team in Europe, and Scotland
needed a victory in Brussels to bolster their
World Cup hopes. It did not happen however,
and two goals in a three minute period, 68
th

and 71
st
saw Scotland beaten 2-0, and Craig
Leveins coaching job in jeopardy. Wales
visited Croatia, where a goal in each half saw
the hosts claim the three points with a 2-0
win. Scotland (2pts) and Wales (3pts) are
the bottom teams in Group A. Dean Shiels
netting at Windsor Park in the 14
th
minute had
Northern Ireland fans hoping it was enough
against Luxembourg, but Dan da Mota got
an equalizer four minutes from time to see
the game end 1-1.
United States Through, Honduras
Hits Eight
Eddie Johnson put a smile on Jurgen
Klinsmanns face as his double gave the US
a 2-1 win at St Johns, over Antigua & Bar-
buda. Johnson put the Americans ahead in
the 20
th
minute, but fve minutes later Dexter
Blackstock, equalized for the Caribbean side.
Johnson hit the winner in the dying seconds.
At Kansas City, Carlos Ruiz put Guatemala
ahead in the ffth minute before Carlos Bo-
canegra, got the US level fve minutes later.
Clint Dempsey followed with a brace giving
the Americans a 3-1 win and a place in the
fnal qualifying round. The US, Mexico, Ja-
maica, Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama
with fght it out for three places in Brazil.
Former England coach Fabio Capello,
saw his Russian charges beat a Cristiano
Ronaldo led Portugal side 1-0 in Moscow,
thus winning all their group games so far.
Goal-feast of the world cup encounters saw
Germany win 6-1 at Dublin over Ireland,
while Israel slammed Luxembourg 6-0
away from home. Honduras beat Canada
8-1, Mexico took Guyana 5-0, and then the
hapless Guyanians were slammed 7-0 by
Costa Rica.
European Soccer
The second series of Champion League
group games October 2-3, saw Manchester
United leave Romania with a 2-1 victory
under their belt after a Robin van Persie (29
th

& 49
th
minute) double against Cluj Napoca.
United had dropped behind in the 14
th
minute
before van Persie hit back. Celtic produced
a 3-2 win in Russia over Spartak Moscow,
goals courtesy of Gary Hooper (12
th
minute)
a Dmitric Kombrov own goal in the 71
st
min-
ute, while Georgios Samaras hit the winner in
the fnal seconds. Spartak were down to ten
men in the 62
nd
minute after Juan Insurrade
got his matching orders. Chelsea slammed
Nordsjnelland in Denmark, 4-0. Juan Mata
got a brace, with David Luiz and Ramires
fnding the net too. At the Emirates Stadium,
Arsenal overwhelmed Olympiakos of Greece
3-1. Nettings by Gervinho, three minutes
before the break, Lukas Podolski in the 56
th

minute, and a conclusive third in the dying
seconds by Aaron Ramsey. A successful
Mario Balotelli penalty just prior to the fnal
whistle, had Manchester City breathing
easier as the Sky Blues edged a 1-1 tie with
Borussia Dortmund, who had led since the
62
nd
minute.
The Europa League second match group
scheduled, October 4, witnessed Newcastle
Utd win 3-0 at home against Bordeaux.
Shola Ameobi put the Magpies ahead in
the 16
th
minute, while an own goal by the
French side in the 40
th
minute added conf-
dence, and Papiss Cisse made it three, four
minutes after the break. A stunning header
by Michael Dawson in the 35
th
minute,
gave Tottenham Hotspur the advantage in
Greece, but Panathiakos leveled it in the
second half for a 1-1 result. Liverpool found
themselves 3-1 down against Udinese, when
Sebastian Coates found his own net in the
70
th
minute and Giovanni Pasquale scored
two minutes later. Earlier Jonjo Shelvey had
put Liverpool on the scorecard in the 23
rd

minute, Antonio di Natale equalized just after
the break, while a second by Liverpools Luis
Suarez in the 75
th
minute did close the gap.
A 40,000 plus Anfeld crowd lamented a 3-2
Udinese victory.
English League Cup
The third round of the Capital One English
League Cup late September, saw Aston
Villa surprise Champions Manchester City
at the Etihad Stadium with two extra-time
goals that pushed them to a 4-2 victory.
Leeds Utd beat premier side Everton 2-1 at
Elland Road, while Wigan won 4-1 at Upton
Park against West Ham. Chelsea slammed
Wolves 6-0 at Stamford Bridge, while Ar-
senal dispatched Coventry City, 6-1, at the
Emirates stadium.
Scottish League & Cup Action
Celtic led the Scottish Premier Division
by three points mid-October, with a game
in hand. Over the month, they won 2-0 at
Motherwell, 1-0 over Hearts at Parkhead,
followed by a 5-0 away victory at St Mirren.
Partick Thistle clobbered Airdrie United at
home 7-0 to go top of Division One. Queen
of the South remain unbeaten after nine
games and led Division Two by seven points.
Rangers lead the Division Three table with
Elgin City, both on 15 points apiece. Stirling
Albion shocked Ally McCoists men with a
1-0 win, October 6 where the Rangers never
recovered from a Brian Allison netting in the
eighth minute.
Rangers crashed out of the quarter-fnals
of the Ramsden Challenge Cup at the Ibrox
Stadium, in front of a 23,000 crowd, late Sep-
tember. Rangers Barrie McKay and Lee Mc-
Culloch looked to have sewn it up with a 2-1
lead over Queen of the South with a minute
to go, but then, Gavin OReilly found the net.
The match went to a penalty shootout with the
South winning 4-3. In the semifnals, Queen
of the South beat Arbroath 2-1 where extra-
time was needed and a late Ryan McGuffe
netting provided the winner. A Steve Craig
goal in the 74
th
minute gave Partick Thistle
a 1-0 win over Cowdenbeath. The Challenge
Cup fnal is scheduled for April.
The second round of the Scottish Cup,
September 29, pit the junior sides in with
Scottish Division Three clubs,which saw
Rangers visit the Highland League Champi-
ons, Forres Mechanics at Mosset Park. A
Kal Naismith netting provided the only goal
of the game, and the Mechanics had a man
sent off in the second half as Rangers came
through 1-0. No such luck for Peterhead
who were beaten 3-2 at Deverondale, while
Montrose was eliminated at home 3-1 by
Edinburgh City. League sides Clyde and An-
nan Athletic would make their farewells too,
losing replays to Nairn County and Buckie
Thistle respectively.
The third round of the Scottish Communi-
ties League Cup, saw Lee McCulloch and
Dean Shiels give Rangers a 2-0 win over
Scottish Premier League leaders Motherwell,
in Glasgow, while cross City rivals Celtic,
pummeled Raith Rovers 4-1 at Parkhead,
courtesy of four goal hero, Gary Hooper.
Late European Soccer
Champions League and Europa League
matches continued through October 23-24
and 25. Manchester United went two down
against Braga at Old Trafford, in front of a
packed 73,000 plus crowd but came back to
win 3-2. The Portuguese went ahead in the
2
nd
and 20
th
minutes, before Mexican striker
Javier Hernandez hit a double in the 25
th

and 75
th
minutes. Jonny Evans got the win-
ner for the Reds eight minutes from the end.
Celtic looked to have earned a 1-1 draw at
Barcelona, but Alba scored in the fnal minute
to make the Barca 2-1 winners. Georgio
Samaras gave the Hoops the advantage in
the 18
th
minute, before Iniesta put things level
on half-time. Ukrainian champions Shaktar
Donetsk welcomed Chelsea and won 2-1.
Oscar put the Blues on the scorecard two
minutes from time. 60,000 fans at the Emir-
ates Stadium saw Arsenal outgunned by
Schalke 04, as two second half goals gave
the Germans a 2-0 win. In Amsterdam, Ajax
beat Manchester City 3-1. Nasri put the Sky
Blues ahead after 22 minutes, but the Dutch
came back with a goal on the break, and two
more in the 57
th
and 68
th
minutes.
In the Europa League, French midfelder
Gabriel Obertan, netted three minutes after
the break, at the newly renamed St James
Park, giving Newcastle Utd a 1-0 win over
Club Bruges. Liverpools Stewart Downing
broke the deadlock against Russian side,
Anzhi Makhachkala at Anfeld, where his 53
rd

minute goal gave Liverpool a 1-0 result and
the three points. Tottenhams visit to Slovenia
ended in a 1-1 draw with NK Maribor. The
hosts went ahead three minute prior to the
break, but Icelandic midfelder Gylf Sigur-
dsson, netted in the 58
th
minute, giving the
Spurs a 1-1 result.
Hodgson Granted Knighthood By
Finland
England manager Roy Hodgson has been
honored with a knighthood by Finland after
leading the Nordic team to its highest-ever
ranking during his two years in charge.
Hodgson coached Finland from January
2006 to November 2007, when the team
climbed to 33rd in the FIFA rankings and only
narrowly missed out on qualifying for the
2008 European Championship. It would have
been Finlands frst major tournament.

Arsenal: Mikel Arteta scored his
frst goal of the season in controver-
sial circumstances, peeling away
from the goal line off-side but not
whistled for knocking home the goal by which
the Gunners beat Queens Park Rangers, 1-0.
The Gunners lost for the second time in three
matches when goalie Vito Mannone fumbled
a shot and Norwich banged in the loose ball
for the only goal of the game.
Aston Villa: Christian Benetkes
goal in the frst half provided a 1-0
lead that Villa tried to nurse through
a nervous second period, most of
which they played a man down following
Joseph Bennetts dismissal in the 52
nd
min-
ute. They succumbed with 11 minutes left in
regulation and settled for a 1-1 draw with Nor-
wich. Before the game manager Paul Lambert
behind Liverpool by two goals but entered
the locker room tied at 2-2, which is how the
219
th
Merseyside derby ended. They rode out
a 1-1 draw with an own goal at QPR a man
down for the last half an hour following Steven
Pienaars dismissal
Fulham: The Cottagers twice let
one-goal leads slip at Reading and
wound up tied, 3-3. Bryan Ruizs
goal near the hour mark tied the
game and after Chris Baird scored a goal that
was matched, Dimitar Berbatov tallied an ap-
parent winner with two minutes left. It wasnt.
Bairds goal with six minutes left was enough
to down Aston Villa, 1-0.
Liverpool: Luis Suarez scored
in the 20
th
minute, six minutes
after an own goal had given
Liverpool the lead against Everton
at Goodison Park. But the Reds
squandered the advantage and though they
left with a point via the 2-2 draw, it left them
lower than their city rivals in the standings
and in 12
th
place. England Under-21 interna-
tional Raheem Sterling scored his frst goal
for Liverpool in a 1-0 defeat of Reading. At
17 years and 317 days old, he is the clubs
second-youngest Premier League goalscorer
behind Michael Owen.
Manchester City: A great strike
by Carlos Tevez and a second
clean sheet of the season for Joe
Hart, along with the three points,
were all City could celebrate after a grim 1-0
home win over Swansea. Terez connected
with a blast from 25 yards after Hart had kept
the game scoreless with two good saves from
Michu. The defending champions showed
their mettle by rallying 10-against-11 and
getting two goals from substitute Edin Dzeko
to beat West Bromwich Albion, 2-1. He scored
a minute after coming on as a sub with 10
minutes left and struck again two minutes into
stoppage time.
Manchester United: Javier
Hernandez provided United with
a 3-2 victory at Chelsea that
they had led 2-0 on an own goal
and a strike from Robin Van Persie, his ninth
of the season. The victory moved United to
within one point of the league leader. Wayne
Rooney equalized his own own goal, and then
Robin Van Persie and Danny Wellbeck scored
a minute on either side of halftime to power
United past Stoke City, 4-2. Rooney provided
the fnal margin with his second goal of the
game in the 65
th
minute. Rooney also netted
a pair, including his 200
th
for the club, in a 4-2
thumping of Stoke City.
Newcastle United: A double
dose of Demba drove the Mag-
pies to a 2-1 victory over West
Bromwich Albion. Papiss Demba
Cisse struck the winner in the third minute of
stoppage time; Demba Ba had opened the scor-
ing 10 minutes before the interval. An own goal
by Ba with fve minutes left gave Sunderland
a 1-1 draw after Yohan Cabaye had shot the
Magpies ahead in the third minute and Ismael
Cheik Tiote was sent off in the 25
th
.
Norwich City: The Canaries
downed Arsenal, 1-0, with a Grant
Holt goal to earn their frst Premier
League victory. Holt pounced on
a goalkeeping error in the 19
th
minute and
John Ruddy made fve saves to earn the win.
Michael Turner converted a fne feed from Wes
Hoolahan in the 79
th
minute of a 1-1 draw at
Aston Villa.
Queens Park Rangers:
A great start forged by David
Hoiletts goal in the second
minute couldnt be sustained in
a 1-1 draw with Everton that left QPR as the
only league team without a victory after nine
games played. Keeper Julio Cesar equalized
with an own goal and the Rs couldnt exploit
a 11-v-10 advantage for the fnal half an hour.
They lost their ffth game of seven, 3-2 at
West Bromwich Albion;
Adel Taarabt cut a 2-0
defcit in half, but QPR
conceded another again
and Esteban Graneros
goal came in stoppage time.
Reading: In the fnal seconds
Hal Robson-Kanu poked home
the last equalizer of a wild 3-3
draw with Fulham. Four goals
were scored in the fnal 13 minutes; Mikele
Leighterwood had opened the scoring in the
frst half, and after falling behind the Royals
re-tied the game at 2-2 when Garath McLeary
struck fve minutes from time. The Royals took
a 2-0 halftime lead at Swansea with goals by
Pavel Pogrebynak and Noel Hunt, but they
conceded twice in the second half to record
a second straight 2-2 draw.
Southampton: Jay Rodriguezs
goal midway through the second
half brought the Saints only half-
way back at home against Spurs,
and at the fnal whistle they were still there at
2-1. Keeper Artur Boruc allowed four goals in
his Saints debut as they were routed, 4-1, at
West Ham. Adam Lallanas goal in the 63
rd

minute briefy cut the defcit to 2-1.
Stoke City: Michael Kightly
scored in the 58
th
minute to nar-
row a defcit at Manchester United
to 3-2, but that goal plus an own
goal was all they generated in a 4-2 loss.
American international Geoff Cameron played
the full 90 minutes at right back. The Potters
held off Liverpool at Anfeld to secure a 0-0
draw that was their ffth deadlock in the last
seven games.
Sunderland: Still only one
win in the league. Had a bad
start to the month with a 3-0
downer at Man City. A third-
minute goal by close rivals Cabaye looked
to have settled the Newcastle derby until a
defection off Ba fve minutes from time left
all square at the Stadium of Light. Then a
goalless non-thriller at Stoke preceeded the
Black Cats succumbing weakly at home to
their other NE lesser rivals Middlesbro 1-0 in
the Capital One Cup.
Swansea City: A goalless game
sprang to life after the hour mark
when Pablo and Michu scored
just two minutes apart, but the
Swans conceded after another two minutes
and needed some defensive heroics to hold
off Wigan, 2-1. A groin injury suffered by
goalkeeper Michael Worm in a 1-0 loss at
Manchester City will keep him out of action
until at least late November.
Tottenham Hotspur: American
striker Clint Dempseys goal in the
39
th
minute proved to be the winner
as Spurs topped Southampton, 2-1,
at St Marys Stadium. Gareth Bale had
opened the scoring against his former team in
the 14
th
minute. William Gallas and Jermaine
Defoe bracketed halftime with the goals that
gave Spurs a 2-1 lead over Chelsea, but a
three-goal onslaught in the second half left
them 4-2 in arrears.
West Bromich Albion: Romelu
Lukaku tallied 10 minutes after half-
time to tie the match at Newcastle,
1-1, and the Baggies were seconds
away from a point when they conceded the
winner well into stoppage time. Shane Longs
goal midway through the second half gave
WBA a 1-0 lead against 10-man Manchester
City, but the lead evaporated in the fnal min-
utes of a 2-1 defeat.
West Ham United: James
Tompkins goal in stoppage time
averted a shutout but not a 2-1
defeat at Wigan. Mark Noble
scored twice and Kevin Nolan and Modibo
Maiga netted one apiece in a 4-1 rout of
Southampton. Noble fighted home a 40-yard
free kick in frst minute of the second half to
trigger the barrage.
Wigan Athletic: Ivan Ramis
and James McArthur scored
early in each half and the Latics
survived a stoppage-time reply
to edge past West Ham United, 2-1. Two
minutes after conceding a second goal in as
many minutes, Wigan pulled back to 2-1 at
Swansea through an Emmerson Boyce goal,
and thats how the match ended.

Chelsea: The unbeaten league
record ended with a 3-2 home
defeat by Manchester United. A
David Luiz own goal helped stake
the visitors to a 2-0 lead; Juan Mata and
Ramires scored either side of halftime to tie
the match, but two sendings-off (Branislav
Ivanovic, Fernando Torres) and an off-side
winner proved decisive. Goals by Mata three

New Scottish Caps
For All Blacks Test
ANDY ROBINSON has freshened
up his Scotland squad with seven
uncapped players for the game
against world champion New
Zealand on November 11 at Mur-
rayfeld.
Kelly Brown, Rory Lawson,
Jim Hamilton, Kyle Traynor and
Ruaridh Jackson were recalled last
month after missing the triumphant
summer tour of Australia, Fiji and
Samoa, while the seven uncapped
players were Edinburghs Stuart
McInally and Grant Gilchrist, and
Glasgows Alex Dunbar, Peter
Horne, Peter Murchie, Tommy
Seymour and Henry Pyrgos.
Scotland has never beaten the
All Blacks, but Robinson sees a
matchup they can learn a lot from.
Injured Kearney
To Miss Irelands
Autumn Tests
IRELAND will be without injured
fullback Rob Kearney for the au-
tumn tests, leaving the team short
of a regular No 15 for matches
against South Africa, Fiji and Ar-
gentina next month.
Kearney, the European player
of the year, wasnt included in the
31-man squad named by Declan
Kidney last month because of a
back injury.
With Geordan Murphy retired
and Luke Fitzgerald also out in-
jured, Kidney is short of options
at fullback and may turn to center
Keith Earls.
Ireland plays South Africa on
November 10 before matches
against Fiji and Argentina over the
following two weekends.

A Tale Of Two Fly-Halves
WHAT IS IT about fy-halves? They are
the players with all the key skills at the
heart of a team, dictating the course of
a game. Yet all too often they cannot run
their own lives.
Take Gavin Henson at Lon-
don Welsh who have made a
fair start in their return to the
top level of the English game.
Some part of this is due to his
introduction at fy-half. The TV
stars first appearance was
delayed by an early season
injury. But now hes settled down, he
looks awesome, running games as
though he has never been away from the
game still plenty young enough to play
for his country.
Or what about Danny Cipriani at Sale,
also looking for a return to international
glory. He came on as a sub against Cardiff
and was on hand to score the deciding
try to beat the Blues. With his kicking and
passing game in fne fettle and his social
life under control out in the feshpots of
Cheshire, he must surely be back in the
reckoning for England.
Restless Saracens On The Move
Saracens are quite an ambitious club,
always seeking new opportunities in
unlikely places. Last month they moved
a home fxture in the Heineken Cup to
Brussels to play the Parisian side Racing
Metro. Now theyve come up with another
great wheeze to play Januarys home
tie against Edinburgh in Cape Town. The
Scots, however, are unmoved by the
prospect of playing a vital game thousands
of miles away from their fans homes,
despite the lucrative prospect of a 56,000
crowd and have turned down the offer. It
will be the Sarries last game at Vicarage
Road, Watford, before they move to their
new pitch at Allianz Park, Hendon.
The London outft has also had its bid
to stage a mid-December game against
Munster in New York. They wanted to
hire the New York Metlife stadium used by
the Giants and Jets with space
for 82,500 fans. However,
the NFL teams owners didnt
want rugby posts installed on
their artifcial pitch and refused
the application. It would have
been a great money-spinner
but surely the players would
have faced considerable physical danger
on artifcial turf.
News From Down-Under
An under-strength Australian team
managed to scrape a 25-19 victory against
Argentina at the Rosario ground in Buenos
Aires to fnish runners-up behind New
Zealand in the inaugural season of the
southern hemispheres Rugby Champion-
ship. Laser beams were shone in the faces
of Aussie place kickers Mike Harris and
Kirtley Beale. The victory rescued coach
Robbie Deans who has been fghting to
hang on to his job with the visit of the
Great British and Irish Lions set to tour
the country next year.
The New Zealand rugby shirt is a mighty
symbol. Black with a silver fern, it is the
ultimate, assertion of supremacy. But
it changed in late October as the NZRU
faced up to the dire state of their fnances.
In order to plug a 100m gap, it has ac-
cepted a sponsorship deal from AIG. The
American insurance giant at one time
sponsored Manchester United but ended
the deal after receiving a record $182bn
bailout from the US government during the
global fnancial crisis.
