there was a large turnout even from places as far away as Upington, Kimberley and Cape Town. The theme this year was "The power of God for Salvation" and all speakers developed the theme according to the
subjects and scriptures that they were given. Fran spoke for a ladies class and Ipreached the Sunday morning service. This conference is devoted just to the preaching and teaching of the gospel. We do not have long meetings discussing many problems of the churches: we just have the building up of the church through God's Word. Along with the main services of preaching, there are always classes for
men, women and even activities for the youth. The
youth always have classes and then on Saturday have an organized activity where they go to a local resort, etc., to enjoy being together as just the youth. Some of the older youth now head up those activities and have put into practice what they have learned over the years about being leaders. All in all, conference caters to everyone who wants to be involved and, when people participate, they can be built up during their time together. The planning committee for the conference is elected every two years and is mainly responsible
for planning the conference every year. This year Iwasaskedtobethechairman onceagain and Iwill
serve for the next two years. This is the fourth twoyear term that Ihave served and Iam pleased to be ofservice to the people in thisway. AndrewCalvert, the minister that we work with here in George, is
again serving as treasurer as he has since 1983. Jerry Kennedy served wellas chairman the last four
years and we are thankful for his service.
Next year's conference is being planned for the town of Upington inthe northern part ofthe country.
We were there in 1988 for the conference and the
ofthe arrangements well. Twoyears from nowwe are planning for conference to be here in George,
and the people here are so excited that they are talking about skipping next year's conference and just planning for that one. Please pray for us as we make future plans and help the people have an
encouraging time in the Lord.

Cape Town, four hours' drive away. All came to spend the weekend with us except for Steve Zimmerman who drove in and out the same day. While here, the ones who spent the weekend took part in the two services on Sunday at the George church, which pleased the local people very much. Our goal in 1998 is to have at least one session
(whether it be a week, a weekend, or successive
weekends) taught every month in different places around the country. We already have requests from Humansdorp, Port Elizabeth, Graaff-Reinet and others in the planning stages for the next year. Please pray forthe workof Cape BibleSeminary as
we feel it is an effective tool of the kingdom to build

we are convinced of that. When we came here in
Of
December last year, we wanted to rent a furnished apartment and the real estate agent told us that that would be impossible as it was just getting into the holiday season and most apartments were taken with holiday makers. Atthe last minute she remem bered a couple who had been trying to sell their house with no success. She said that they might be interested in renting itfurnished until they got itsold. They had left their furniture in it to make it more attractive to buyers to look at and so, therefore, it suited our needs. They decided that they did want to rent it out, but only on a monthly basis, and that was fine with us. Our things were in storage, we could look out after their place, and itwould all work
well.
While we were renting that house, we started looking at houses to buy in January. After looking at forty to fifty houses with many estate agents, we decided on and signed the papers for the house at 48 Stander Street, hoping to move in by April or May at the latest. The people living in the house were renting from the previous owners and had a con tract to stay until June 30 and decided that they would stay until that time. Not getting in the house earlier than July disappointed us, but we figured that there must be a reason for it. April 17 we got the reason when we got a call from Texas and we made that quick trip back for Fran's brother
course we were gone until June 4th and could not have moved in May anyway. After the people moved out on June 30, we took ownership on July 1. We then took a week in which we painted the house, had an alarm system in stalled, and got ready for our belongings which would arrive from storage in Cape Town the next week. It only took us about two car loads to move ourthings that were already here in George and our first night in the house was actually the 8th, the day our belongings arrived. Coincidentally (that's what some people would say), the house that we were renting sold immediately after we moved out and people moved in there the first of August. With the things arriving from Cape Town which included all of our belongings from Cape Town and the container load from furlough, you can just imagine the mess. It took us over a month to unpack and we are now settled just fine. This house has four bedrooms, an adjacent apartment, a sepa rate office and plenty of space for visitors. When the Cape Bible Seminary co-workers came, they all stayed here with no problem. We are very thankful for this house and pray that God would use itfor his glory. The Sunday before we moved in, we invited the church in George over and we had a small dedication service on the back patio to dedicate the house for God's glory. Please pray for us that we may use it for his will and his glory. If you want to come and visit and help with work, you are always
welcome.

Fran's Feelings
Hi You All!!
We hope and pray that this letter finds you well and happily serving our Lord. There have been some of you who have been injured, sick and lost
loved ones since our return to South Africa. Please
best to watch for anything in the different places. So far he is controlling his diabetes with his diet, and we pray it will remain this way for a long time, Lord willing of course. This year's conference was in Queenstown. We had never been there before and they had never hosted a conference before. It all went very
well and Queenstown is a nice little town. Consid
know that you are inour prayers and our hope is that you are recovered and have found peace and comfort in your trying times. Thank you for remem bering us in your prayers as well. It is so nice to be settled in our home in George.
We all love this house; it is so comfortable and
useful. At times I felt like we would never get everything unpacked before we got busy, but we did. It took us about six weeks to get everything unpacked and put away. We are so grateful for such a nice and big house because we were able to find a place for everything. Denzil was so good, too. He hardly ever got in the way, and he actually helped occasionally. It was quite exciting for all of us to go through everything because we forgot some of what we had. Most of Denzil's things seemed like they were new to him. He would say, "Oh my goodness!" or "Surprise!" Again, we say thank you to all of you who sent things to put in the container, and a big thanks to those who helped us pack up the container. Only a few things got broken in the move and they were the things that were already here in storage. So we
thank God for that.
Kennedy did all of the children's classes; she loves doing it and the kids seem to like her a lot. Denzil enjoyed the classes and that is a first since we've been back in South Africa. He usually won't leave my side, so we were pleased to see this progress. The youth were expecting Pete and me to be with them some, but it wasn't planned and we weren't able to. Next year, since Pete is chairman of the planning committee again, we will make a plan to be with the youth. Sunday evening and the Monday and Tuesday
after conference, we were at Graaff-Reinet for a "missionary retreat." It was encouraging and a fun time for all of us who attended. We always enjoy getting together with the other missionaries be cause of the common bond in 1) being a Christian, 2) working in South Africa, and 3) being Americans. It was encouraging and uplifting for us. Septemberthrough November is a busy time for traveling. We have Cape Bible Seminary week ends, other traveling to do, and a Vacation Bible School to plan. Please continue to pray for safe travels. Denzil still is a great little traveler. He is growing up fast and is getting to be an independent
August was a busy time for us in that we had a lot of company all month. Our first guest was a friend of mine from Cape Town, Sharon Reed. We then had David Jantjies and his family (7 total) come and spend the weekend. The following weekend we had ten missionaries here for a Cape Bible Seminary meeting. It was a busy time, but great fun. We had a bed for everyone and fellow ship was wonderful. Iknow that many of you worry about Peter's diet when we have company and travel now that he has diabetes. I have some recipes that I make special for Pete (especially things like cookies, sauces and even brownies). He does very well resisting the "no-nos," but he still needs your prayers; it's not always easy. Itis difficult to find things for him to eat
and snack on here, unlike the States. So we do our

little fellow. So far, he does well interactingwith the African kids. He has trouble with many ofthe youth and adults because they scare him by pulling at him, grabbing at him, and teasing him (ofcourse, all done lovingly). But he is learning and isall right with it all most of the time as long as one of us is close by. Denzil is learning to dance and sing like the Africans and becoming quite a performer. He is
popular that is for sure.
We plan on spending Christmas in Cape Town as Kevin and Debbie Oakley (friendsfrom Berea Christian Church in Hampton, GA) are arriving with their children the day after Christmas at the airport in Cape Town for a visit here in George. While here, they will be helping witha Vacation BibleSchool that we are having from December
29 to January 5.

After the annual conference, we met in the town
