Galway Chain

Materials
Fabric 1 yd. Aqua (4378-13) Fabric 2 2 yds. Turquoise (4375-11) Fabric 3 1 yds. Brown Floral (4377-31) Fabric 4 2 yds. Dark Brown (4374-31) Fabric 5 2 yds. White Tonal (4376-01w) Fabric 6 2 yds. Focal Print (4379-13) 9 yards of coordinating fabric for quilt backing 103" x 103" piece of batting usual sewing and rotary cutting supplies

Finished Quilt Size: 95" x 95" Finished Block Size: 15" x 15"
3. Sewing lengthwise, join as shown: (1) 3 " brown oral, (2) 3 " white tonal, and (2) 3 " dark brown strips. Repeat to make a second strip set. Cut these strip sets into a total of (13) 3 " wide segments.

Cutting

(All strips are cut across the width of the fabric from selvage edge to selvage edge).

4. To make (1) chain block, stitch together as shown below: (2) segments from step 1, (2) segments from step 2, and (1) segment from step 3. Repeat to make a total of (13) chain blocks.

From the aqua, cut: (1) 9 " strip. Recut into (4) 9 " x 9 " squares. (4) 3 " strips. Recut into (16) 3 " x 9 " pieces. From the turquoise, cut: (2) 9 " strips. Recut into (8) 9 " x 9 " squares. (8) 3 " strips. Recut into (32) 3 " x 9 " pieces. (10) 2 " strips for the binding. From the brown oral, cut: (14) 3 " strips. From the dark brown, cut: (15) 3 " strips. Recut (8) strips into (96) 3 " x 3 " squares. Reserve (7) strips for strip sets. (8) 2 " strips for inner border. From the white tonal, cut: (23) 3 " strips. Recut (4) strips into (48) 3 " x 3 " squares. Reserve (15) strips for strip sets. From the focal print, cut: (9) 8 " strips for the outer border.

Make the Alternate Blocks 1. Draw diagonal lines on the wrong sides of (2) 3 " dark brown squares. Right sides together, layer the marked squares on each end of a 3 " x 9 " turquoise piece. Sew on the marked lines. Trim 1/4" beyond the seam lines. Press the resulting dark brown triangles up to make the unit shown. Repeat to make a total of (4) units. 2. Stitch (2) units from step 1 to opposite sides of a 9 " turquoise square, noting orientation. Stitch 3 " white tonal squares to each end of the (2) remaining units from step 1. Sew these units to the remaining sides of the 9 " turquoise square, again noting orientation.

Sewing
(All seams are sewn with pieces held right sides together, raw edges even, and using a 1/4" seam allowance.)

Make the Chain Blocks


(All strip sets should measure 15 " high from raw edge to raw edge.)

1. Sewing lengthwise, join as shown: (1) 3 " dark brown, (2) 3 " white tonal, and (2) 3 " brown oral strips. Press all seams away from the white tonal strips. Repeat to make a total of (3) strip sets. Cut these strip sets into a total of (26) 3 " wide segments.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make a total of (8) turquoise alternate blocks. Using 9 " aqua squares and 3 " x 9 " aqua pieces, repeat the procedure from steps 1 and 2 to make a total of (4) aqua alternate blocks.

Quilt Assembly
1. Arrange the blocks into (5) rows with (5) blocks in each row. Alternate the chain and alternate blocks as shown in the quilt pictured on the cover. Sew the blocks into rows and sew the rows together to complete the quilt center. 2. Trim the selvages from the 2 " dark brown strips. Sew the strips together end to end to make a long 2 " strip. From this long strip, cut (2) 75 " and (2) 79 " lengths (if your measurements are di erent, cut to t your quilt top). Sew the shorter pieces to the left and right sides of the quilt top. Sew the longer pieces to the top and bottom. 3. Trim the selvages from the 8 " focal print strips and sew the strips together end to end to make a long 8 " strip. From this long strip, cut (2) 79 " and (2) 95 " lengths (if your measurements are di erent, cut to t your quilt top). Sew the shorter pieces to the left and right sides of the quilt top. Sew the longer pieces to the top and bottom. 4. Layer the nished quilt top with batting and backing and quilt as desired. 5. Trim the completed quilt and bind using the 2 " turquoise strips.
