I TA L I A N
INTRODUCTION ITALY: SOCIAL AND BUSINESS CUSTOMS There are around 60 million speakers of Italian in Italy, half a million in Switzerland, where it is one of the four official languages, and 1.5 million speakers in France and the former Yugoslavia. As a result of migration, Italian is also widely spoken in the USA, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, and Australia. While many and varied dialects are spoken in everyday conversation, standard Italian is the national language of schools, media and literature. This began developing in the 13th and 14th centuries, predominantly through the works of Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio, who wrote chiefly in the Florentine dialect. The language drew on its Latin heritage and many dialects of Italy to develop into the standard Italian of today. Opera, movies and literature from the great Renaissance works to modern writers such as Alberto Moravia, Italo Calvino, and Umberto Eco have all contributed to portraying Italian as the vibrant, melodic, and rich language that it is. Although many Italians speak some English, it is more widely understood in the north, particularly in major centers such as Milan, Florence, and Venice, than in the south. Youll find that staff at most hotels and restaurants usually speak some English but youll always receive a warm welcome if you attempt some Italian. Italians are very social and friendly people. In personal encounters, however, they maintain a certain formality until theyve gotten to know you. As a rule, dont try to become too familiar with people, when you first meet them. Do not address them by their first names. To say you use formal Lei rather than familiar tu unless you are speaking to a child or unless the other person first addresses you as tu, a sign of intimacy. When you enter a store, you will be greeted immediately. Politeness is always appreciated, and when you are asked what you would like, it is often better to reply, io vorrei (I would like), than to say, io voglio (I want). The former has a gentler tone. The same is true when making a request: potrebbe (could you) is better than pu (can you), which sounds brusque. In business affairs, it is good to have your documents translated and have other supporting material on hand when you approach your Italian contacts. Punctuality is appreciated but it is not the best quality of Italian people, so be prepared to accept the many and different excuses for not starting on time. 1

Either because of their long lunches or because of the work habits, Italian managers tend to stay late at the office: senior executives commonly work past 7:00 p.m. Italian meals especially at home tend to be rather involved affairs. There may be an appetizer, a first course, and a second course followed by salad, cheese, fruit, and dessert. Business lunches can last for two or three hours. Wait for the host to broach the subject of business; it is customary to spend the first part of the meal getting acquainted and chatting about the food. Relax, and enjoy your meal! Be open to try the different regional food and wine varieties; it will help you to understand the cultural and historical differences among the Italian regions and peoples. Gifts are not usually exchanged at first meetings, but it is appropriate to exchange gifts during the Christmas holidays. Whenever you are invited to an Italian home, it is appropriate to bring a gift. The same way Italians love food, they also love to be well dressed. Milan is the capital of the Italian fashion industry, and you will find all the famous designers clothing in very elegant boutiques. When you go out in the evening, you are expected to dress up. Italians enjoy life, they live la dolce vita from the title of a very famous film by Federico Fellini. They appreciate food and wine, love, fashion, expensive cars, and art. You can have a great time in Italy if you take with you the one thing necessary to participate in its life: a little knowledge of the language. WELCOME TO GLOBAL ACCESS ITALIAN Welcome to Fast Track Italian! This course is designed to teach you basic conversational Italian. It will enable you to communicate in Italian with sufficient ease to travel, conduct business, and survive abroad with comfort. Whether it be for business or pleasure, you can learn quickly and easily how to find your way in Italian. We have specifically included vocabulary and phrases geared to the needs of the business traveler. Mastering this vocabulary will help you communicate effectively in Italian by telephone, by fax, or face to face thus gaining valuable business information and contacts. You will learn business and social protocol for dealing with Italian-speaking countries. HOW TO USE GLOBAL ACCESS ITALIAN, CDs 1-4 The first step in the program is to familiarize yourself with the accompanying guide. Note that it is divided into five parts, and each part into smaller sections. The left-hand column gives an English word or phrase, and the right-hand column its Italian equivalent. On the CDs you will hear the English first. Then you will hear the Italian twice. As you listen to the Italian the first time, get ready to repeat the phrase after hearing it a second time. Listen to each CD the first few times while simultaneously following the script in the booklet. Then listen over and over again whenever you can: While you work around the house, while you drive, while you relax. You will find that this process of total immersion will make mastering the vocabulary effortless and pleasurable. Before you know it, you will be repeating phrases to yourself without even realizing it. And now lets start with a kind of survival kit, the very basics. 2

APPENDIX PRONUNCIATION
Italian has a consistent pattern of pronunciation and the few rules that follow are easy to master. Although some of the clipped vowels and long sound of double letters require a bit of practice, youll find that it is easy to make yourself understood in Italian. The Italian alphabet has 21 letters. The letters j, w, k, x, and y are only found in foreign words that have been adopted by Italian.

VOWELS
Vowels are generally more clipped than in English. a as a in art . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .pasta e as e in tell . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .festa i as i in bin, but sightly longer . . . . . . . .vino o as o in dot . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .donna o as o in port . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .coda u as oo in book . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .sambuca

In Italian each vowel is pronounced. So, the combination ie has two sounds run together i as in bin and e as in tell, ex: grazie.

CONSONANTS
The pronunciation of many consonants is the same as in English but there are a few rules you should learn. c before a, o, u, and h has a hard sound as k in kick Ex: camera, zucchini before e and i has a soft sound as ch in choose Ex: bocce, ciao before a, o, u, and h has a hard sound as g in get Ex: albergo, spaghetti before e and i has a soft sound as j in job Ex: gelato, giorno before a, o, u, and h has a hard sound as sc in scooter Ex: scaloppini, scherzo before e and i has a soft sound as sh in sheep Ex: crescendo, prosciutto is always silent, ex: ho is pronounced as the o in hot a rolled rr sound, as in Spanish, ex: supermercato a more dental, drier sound than in English 1) voiced as the dz sound in beds, ex: zero 2) unvoiced as ts in lights, ex: stazione 1) between two vowels it is voiced as s in pose, ex: casa 2) everywhere else it is unvoiced, ass in mouse, ex: s

Double consonants
These are pronounced as longer, more emphatic sounds than single consonants.

HELPFUL HINTS GETTING INFORMATION

A source of general information is the Italian Consulate which has branches in major American cities. LIstituto Italiano di Cultura, located also in major American cities, provides literature on cultural, political and economic developments. For businessmen, a helpful source of suggestions and contacts is the United States and Foreign Commercial Service, an export-promotion arm of the Commerce department that maintains offices in several American cities as well as abroad. The Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington D.C. 20402, publishes low-cost booklets on foreign travel, including a frequently-updated list of all U.S. consulates and government missions abroad. The U.S. Customs Service offers Know Before You Go, a free leaflet on restrictions and duties that apply to goods you might wish to bring back to the U.S.

TRANSPORTATION
Traveling by train in Italy is simple, cheap, and usually efficient. After you have bought a ticket, you must validate it in one of the yellow machines found at the entrance to platforms. Intercity (IC) trains run between the major cities in Italy. There are several types of trains in Italy: regionale . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .usually stops at all stations and can be very slow interregionale . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .runs between the regions diretto . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .indicates you do not need to change trains to reach the final destination espresso . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .stops only at major stations Buses and trams run in the cities and take you everywhere. Milan, Naples and Rome are the only cities in Italy which have metros. Cabs are the most common transportation between the airport and the center of the city. If you are planning to drive in Italy, a valid U.S. drivers license is sufficient, but you must also carry appropriate liability insurance. The basic traffic regulation is precedenza a destra, which means that the vehicle coming from the right has the right of way unless signs indicate otherwise. Cars are now banned from most city centers in an effort to reduce pollution and damage to buildings. Roads in Italy range from toll-paying autostrade (freeways) to serviceable strade statali (state roads) to picturesque strade provinciali (regional roads).

POLITICAL STRUCTURE AND CLIMATE

Italy is a parliamentary republic, headed by a president who appoints a prime minister. The parliament consists of two houses the Senate and the House of Deputies which have equal legislative power and are elected every five years. Executive power is exercised by the government and judiciary power by the Magistrature. The President of the Republic, elected for seven years, is in charge of the Constitution. The seat of government is in Rome. While this is not the place to attempt an explanation of Italian politics, a few remarks may be useful to the American visitor. There is a far greater number of political parties and a far greater difference there than here between the right wing and the left wing. Politics are polarized, and a national consensus appears to be lacking on many issues. Strikes (scioperi) by public workers occur often and the traveler should be prepared

for disruptions.

Many museums are closed on Mondays. Since August is a favorite time for vacations, some places take on the appearance of ghost towns during this month.

TELEPHONES
Only in major Italian cities are there Telephone Centers run by Telecom where you can find personnel who can give you all the information and assist you in the process of calling in Italy as well as abroad. In general you can use the public phones located on streets and in public places. Token-operated phones have virtually disappeared.
