In the Classroom

Don’t answer questions.

1. Don’t invite questions unless it pushes the class in the correct direction. If one student asks what time it is,
the next question is always, “When is class over?” That isn’t what you want them to discuss.
2. It confuses and distracts foreign teachers.
3. It confuses and distracts students. Instead of focusing on the lesson, they join the off-topic discussion.

Pencils and pens.

1. Implement and maintain a system. Maybe a student who needs a pencil has to give you a shoe. Whatever.
2. Give students a time limit. It shouldn’t take five minutes to open books or get erasers.
a. Offer a prize for students who can arrange themselves the fastest. A sticker or an eraser.

Chinese or English?
1. Short answer: whatever is most expedient.
2. Best practice: demonstrate if you can. Speak Chinese only to move things along or ensure comprehension.
3. Students should all be familiar with classroom language. They respond to English commands in their schools.

Seating.
1. Problem students sit in the front of the classroom, close to the teacher。
2. Separate large classes into groups or treat them as a single mass entity.
3. Mind physical space. Don’t let students sit too far from the teacher. They can move up if necessary.

Don’t watch classes.

1. If the foreign teacher is teaching, don’t stand and watch. You can check student’s work or prepare materials.
2. If you have a suggestion – you have a good idea for a game or activity, or you think the students need more
work on something – teach by doing. “I’ve got an idea. How about you take a rest, and I’ll play a game with the
students?”
