ASPE was organized to serve as a medium in the solution of professional problems pertaining to plumbing engineering as it affects the profession,

community and the general public.

Advance the general scientific interests of the plumbing engineering profession and to inculcate the desire of scientific achievement in the field among the members of the Association.
Bring about greater cooperation and understanding between the members of the association and plumbing officials, contractors, journeymen and the general public

Society. St. Louis Chapter www.aspe-stl.com

Thanks to everyone who attended the January Luncheon meeting, we had
another great turnout. Mr. Jay Stenklyft from Tyler Pipe gave a very
informative presentation on Siphonic Roof Drains. Eric Rogers has come up
with some great speakers in his first year as VP Technical. Please feel free to
contact Eric with suggestions on future speakers.

The 2012 ASPE Convention and EPE will be held in Nascars hometown of
Charlotte, North Carolina from October 27
th
to the 31
st
. Its not too early to start
thinking about attending this event. As an incentive to our members the board
has decided to send a minimum of one of our members as a delegate and
reimburse them for their registration, airfare and lodging. We will select them
based on how many general chapter meetings they attend from January thru
May of 2012. We will then pick from the ones who have attended the most
meetings. More information will follow in future newsletters.

ASPE Illustrated Plumbing Codes Design Handbooks. Please remember to
register at the sign in table before each meeting for your chance to win one of
four copies of this book (you can only win one book). The winning names will
be pulled out of a hat at our May 2012 meeting and you will not have to be
present to win.

The 2012 National Engineers Week will take place the week of February 19
th

and ASPE National is looking for volunteers to go out and talk to local schools
in your area about plumbing engineering. ASPE is working with other
organizations across the country to promote engineering as a career and if
you would like to get involved, please contact Pam Newman, ASPE Education
Program Coordinator or Mitchell J. Clemente, CPD, Vice President Education.

The 2012 Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) exam has just been announced.
The exam will be held on Thursday April 19
th
and Friday April 20
th
with
registration opening up, January 2
nd
. You will have until March 19
th
to
complete the registration process so just go to ASPE.org for more details or
contact Stacey A. Kidd with any questions that you may have.

Our next meeting is February 7
th
at the Engineers Club. Hope to see you all
then.

Please remember to RSVP to Mike Todd, and bring a friend along!

VP Technical Report
By: Eric P. Rogers

I hope everyone had a happy and safe new year.

As we start the 2012 year, I am very excited about getting speakers and
presentations lined up for everyones benefit. It seems as though the subject
matter and speakers are endless, so why should there be a problem lining up
meetings?

Getting a subject that applies to many of our members, presented from a
person that is considered an expert in their field that doesnt just want to do a
product line sales presentation can be a real challenge. I hope that the
selections of programs and speakers thus far have been meeting everyones
expectations and needs for true professional education.

A few programs in the works are a tour of a local copper factory and a
presentation that sometimes seems to be forgotten, fire protection design and
NFPA 13.

The January Meeting on Siphonic Roof Drainage presented by Mr. Jay Stenclift had
some very good comments:

1. This system is a pressurized full flow system so pitch is not required as in
gravity drain standard systems.
2. The IPC and UPC still require these systems to be self draining so offsets
up in the direction of flow are not allowed.
3. These systems may allow for longer horizontal piping runs with smaller
diameter pipe.
4. ASPE Technical Standard 45 used for apples to apples comparison of
siphonic drains is based upon real world data obtained for installations in
Europe.
5. Sipohonic systems must be provided with a gravity vent when connecting to
gravity type drainage, i.e. at the base of the storm stack.
6. This is considered an engineered system so using manufacturers software
is required during design and contractor field routing, Sizing changes require
computer analysis and a more diligent examination by the plumbing
designer/engineer.

The upcoming Tuesday February 7, 2012 meeting will be on Rainwater
Harvesting and will be presented by Mr. Mark Girgenti.

A lot of discussion has been going on surrounding low flow plumbing fixtures. One
of the questions is, do these reduced flows lead to stoppages of waste in building
drains? What is the tipping point at which flows can be reduced no further without
causing solids to clog the drain line? Does the installation of certain high-
efficiency plumbing fixtures contribute to stoppages? If so, are remedies available
that can mitigate or prevent drain line stoppages?

The Plumbing Efficiency Research Coalition (PERC) has begun doing drain line
carry research and hopes to bring answers to some of these questions.

I would like to get some of your thoughts on this topic, any field related issues
possibly caused by low flow fixtures? Send me an e-mail and I will post them in
next months newsletter.

On another note, IAPMO has just issued the 2012 edition of the Uniform Plumbing
Code. The codebooks will be released for purchase, both in hard copy and digital
format. They have made significant changes to the UPC. Here are a couple of the
more important changes:

1. New appendix L (sustainable practices)
2. New minimum plumbing facilities table (Chapter 4)
3. New alternate water sources for non-potable applications and non-potable
rainwater catchment systems (Chapters 16 and 17) based on IAPMOs
Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement.

As always, if you have a code related issue that you feel would be of interest to
others, please get that to me so we can share your knowledge with the other
members.

February is here and that means spring is around the corner. It is not too early to
start organizing your golf 4-somes. The annual ASPE Golf Tournament is being
held in June. We will have more on the Golf Tournament next month.

The 2012 CPD Examination will be held at testing sites across the country on
April 19 or April 20. Engineers interested in sitting for the 2012 exam can register
online at aspe.org/CPDRegistration.
The Certified in Plumbing Design program is an international certification program
for engineers and designers of plumbing systems. Completion of the CPD
program and examination confers upon the successful candidate the designation
Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD). The CPD is the only international credential
program in the plumbing engineering field and sets the standards for leadership
within the industry and provides formal recognition of outstanding professionals
with advanced skills in the design and specification of plumbing systems.
Continue to talk to your coworkers about the benefits of joining their local ASPE
Chapter. We are still offering our FREE LUNCH program. Talk to me at the next
meeting if you need Membership applications or pamphlet on the advantages of
ASPE.

Speakers Bio:

Mark Girgenti is the lead sales and design engineer for Burt
Process Equipment an environmental process design/skid
manufacturing firm. Mark has spearheaded the design,
integration, project management, and construction of water
treatment equipment for pH adjustment, rain harvesting, gray
water, and high purity water systems in the government,
institutional, and pharmaceutical industries both in the United
States and abroad. Mark brings a unique understanding to
these projects from a process engineering and chemistry
perspective as opposed to the traditional mechanical approach
from his years of study and publication record in membrane
separation technologies. Mark holds a Bachelors Degree in
chemical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
and a Masters of Science in chemistry. He is actively involved
in academic circles as a professional member of the graduate
advisory committee for Southern Connecticut State University
as well as serving as a volunteer faculty member.
