experience counts – get recognised!

Currently working in the building industry without any formal qualifications?

HIA can help recognise your experience through a process called RPL – which recognises your current skills and knowledge against required industry standards and is used to identify any gap training that may be needed. RPL can result in you being granted partial or full results in a qualification without undertaking formal study.

If you think you have skills and knowledge that may meet the requirements of any part of an HIA course, please contact your local HIA Training Services on 1300 650 620.

can HIA support my learning needs?

If you have any special needs for your learning linked to language or disability, you should speak to your local HIA Training Services office at the time of enrolment. HIA can often offer in-house support, or direct you to possible external sources.

HIA will also do its best to accommodate unexpected needs such as changes to your work or personal life.

NRT

Information for learners undertaking Nationally Recognised Training

What is Nationally Recognised Training?

Training is ‘nationally recognised’ if it is developed under the formal Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and is delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), such as HIA. Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) meets the standards required by industry. The ‘Qualification’ or ‘Statement of Attainment’ you gain when your training with the HIA is complete will be recognised across Australia.

When you are looking for NRT training, keep your eye out for the official NRT logo:

HIA VICTORIA 2013 TRAINING DIRECTORY

How much time do I need to dedicate to NRT?

At HIA, NRT is delivered face-to-face. The duration of each training course will be indicated on all training calendars, directories and information sheets.

Please keep in mind that when you undertake NRT, you will need to factor in some addition time outside of the face-to- face classes. This additional time should be used by you for research and assessment preparation. As a guide, you may need to allocate up to 3 hours for every 1 hour you spend in a face-to-face class.

What are the pre-requisites to attend training?

All training at HIA is delivered in English. There is a certain level of language, literacy and numeracy required to be able to successfully participate in NRT Training offered by HIA. If you feel that you may require language, literacy or numeracy support you should contact your regional HIA Training Services team and potentially undertake a Pre-Course Evaluation to determine your needs.

Each short course has additional requirements for items such as tools, stationary and/or protective clothing. This information will be provided to you by your regional training team upon registration into the course or can be requested by you prior to registration.

Recognition of Prior Learning

HIA, as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO number 1091), learners for any nationally to enrolment in the course.

The process of recognising your prior learning is commonly known as ‘RPL’.

This process, put simply, is the recognition of your current skills and knowledge, regardless of how, when or where you gained them. This includes through a combination of formal or informal training and education such as:

qualifications

non-accredited short courses

CPD training certificates

pre-vocational courses

school qualifications

RPL also recognises the importance of your skills and knowledge being current in the context of industry procedures and standards.

For example, business management skills in the construction industry learnt

15 years ago would differ greatly from those of today in terms of technology, industry practice, regulations, etc. HIA RPL assessors will take this factor into consideration when carrying out RPL assessment services on behalf of HIA.

Examples of evidence that may be provided can take a variety of forms including:

references from colleagues, employers, qualified builders, clients, architects, certifiers or engineers

related licenses from any state or territory

awards or prizes you have received relating to your work or relevant activities

relevant documents related to trade or building projects that you can prove you have supervised or managed such as correspondence with:

– clients

– architects, certifiers, and engineers

– councils, suppliers, and sub-contractors

job descriptions, work experience, letters of appointment, log-books

work journal or diary, photos or videos of your work

work samples such as:

– letters/memos

– job specifications

– quotes etc. related to work you have undertaken

What do you need to do to become a builder or a tradesperson?

To work as a builder or tradesperson in Australia you must have a licence or be registered (depending on which state or territory you live in). To gain a licence or registration you must have completed training which has been approved by the licensing body in your state. In some states of Australia you also need to attend training courses to maintain your licence or registration.

Can the HIA help me get the training I need?

Yes! HIA can offer you the right training to help you get your licence or registration, as well as help you keep yourself up- to-date as things change in the industry.

Here are the two main types of training you can do at HIA:

11 11

HIA VICTORIA 2013 TRAINING DIRECTORY

HIA VICTORIA 2013 TRAINING DIRECTORY

Professional Development (PD) is training that keeps your skills and knowledge updated. You do PD because you are interested in the topic, or you need to get some industry updates. PD is also the way you can accumulate CPD points if your state or territory licensing body says you need them to maintain your licence or registration.

Nationally Recognised Training (NRT). This training can only be delivered by registered training organisations such as HIA. NRT is also the type of training that makes up the ‘technical qualifications’ you need to gain an industry licence or registration – such as a Builder’s licence.

NRT can be a short course, a combination of short courses or it can be a full qualification.

Getting your builder registration in Victoria

Each State and Territory has specific requirements in regards to experience, skills, knowledge, and qualifications needed to gain a required license.

Full details about individual jurisdiction licensing can be gained from:

Victorian Building Commission Goods Shed North 733 Bourke Street Docklands VIC 3008 T: 1300 815 127 www. buildingcommission.com.au

Learners should also be aware that a system of Mutual Recognition exists between states and territories.

An online Mutual Recognition Calculator is available at the License recognition website: www. licencerecognition.gov.au

HIA offers the following 12 short courses to assist you to gain the technical qualifications associated with getting your Domestic Builder Unlimited registration.

Descriptions of each of these courses can be found on the following pages.
