WRESTLING IS IT HERE TO STAY?
Mark Williams, sports editor, considers the question.
0
Love it or hate it! This is how most people feel
about wrestling. Those that love it see it as a
clever sport which is exciting to watch. Those
that hate it dislike the violence, or believe it
doesnt require the skills that other fighting
sports such as boxing and judo need.
1
It is true there is a certain type of wrestling.
Professional wrestlers are encouraged to wear
exotic clothes and to jump and dive about the
ring like acrobats. They have strange names
and often one wrestler is seen as good whilst
his opponent is seen as evil. This is of course
a show, for the benefit of the crowd and at
times, the match can seem more like a circus
performance than a real sporting challenge.
2
But amateur wrestling is nothing like this. It is
a skilful sport which demands a great deal of
ability. Strength, speed and balance are all
important. Aclever wrestler can often beat a
more powerful and heavier opponent.
3
In fact, wrestling is one of the oldest sports.
Evidence of this lies in the many drawings
and carvings of men wrestling which have
been found around the world. Sometimes
these are as much as 20,000 years old.
4
Wrestling was first introduced into the
Olympic Games in Greece in 708 BC and
Sumo wrestling existed in Japan before the
700's AD. In Japan today, Sumo wrestling is
considered to be the national sport. The
wrestlers are national heroes in the same way
that football players can be in Britain.
5
There are more than fifty kinds of wrestling
throughout the world today. Each has its own
set of rules which are slightly different. There
are frequent national and world competitions
and every four years, wrestlers take part in
the Summer Olympic Games.
So love it or hate it you cannot deny,
wrestling has been around for a long time and
it seems it is going to remain.
