HD Production
UPGRADE OF HD PRODUCTION
TRAILER FOR SIS LIVE UNIT 10
Challenge
Many broadcasters continue to commission HD-
ready vehicles with an HD infrastructure and SD
components that can be easily upgraded at a later
stage. Others, including SIS LIVEa leading UK OB
eet provider - have undertaken to complete the
SD-to-HD conversion in stages.
Unit 10, a 14-metre production trailer, was origi-
nally designed and built by MHz as an SD vehicle
for BBC Outside Broadcast in 2002. Subsequently
MHz upgraded the vehicle to handle HD video.
When SIS LIVE acquired the BBC eet in 2008, the
company continued the phased upgrade of the au-
dio facilities by incorporating Dolby 5.1 surround
sound throughout and build a new state of the art
desk to accommodate the new audio mixer.
Solution
In 2008, MHz began the next phase of the upgrade programme for SIS LIVE: to refurbish the audio area and
incorporate new desks to provide an ergonomic working environment. MHz specied and replaced the
analogue audio cable with balanced and unbalanced AES digital audio cabling.
It also digitised the audio interfacing in the VT area and installed Dolby processors and Dynaudio 5.1 BM5A
and BM6A audio monitors enabling Dolby E-encoded 5.1 audio signals to be accurately monitored.
Most signicantly, an HD, 5.1 surround sound capable Calrec Sigma digital console with BlueFin processing
was installed ensuring the highest level of audio reliability to meet the most stringent demands of live pro-
duction operations.
As part of this refurbishment programme, MHz also manufactured and installed the requisite custom furniture
using its in-house woodworking facility. This included equipment racks and a bespoke control desk to accom-
modate the Calrec mixer. Having everything in-house enabled the different teams at MHz to work together
and deliver on the customer promise to have the trailer back in service to cover the Badminton Horse trails
for BBC Sport within three weeks.
Not only can MHz design and build from new, the company is also able to deliver a signicant return
on investment (ROI) for customers with its phased refurbishment approach.
So if you are looking to reduce costs and increase productivity of your aging OB eet or maybe
upgrade your SD vehicles to full HD production unit, then MHz can deliver this in a fast, exible and
cost-effective way.
Why MHz?
MHz has a broad range of expertise in building OB trucks & production trailers. MHz has achieved this by of-
fering a one stop shop to its customers. MHzs core competency is its ability to provide the majority of these
skills in-house from the companys base in Cambridge & through its network of international partners. To
that end MHz has built a strong reputation for satised clients with repeat business being proof of this success.
Customers clearly see the MHz offering as one that provides exible solutions to meet the rigorous demands of
their business, build ROI & generate revenue streams in an ever changing & competitive market.
MHz brings together all the many components to make this happen - the companys headquarters
incorporates not only a 2000 square metre prefabrication area, with integrated coach building facilities, an
integral paint shop & CAD Design team but also a wiring/cabling workshop staffed by in-house wiremen. From
compact DSNG vehicles to triple-sided expanded trailers, the MHz team can customise any vehicle in accordance
with client requirements & deliver a swift return on investment.

FILE-BASED 24-HOUR NEWS
FACILITIES & DSNGS FOR MAHAA TV
Challenge
With the proliferation of news channels in India
in recent years, Mahaa TV was keen to build a so-
phisticated infrastructure, using state-of-the-art
media equipment that would enable the company
to broadcast its new channel free-to-air and have
it streamed live over the Internet.
Translating this vision into a reality necessitated
the construction of a new, technologically-ad-
vanced facility which incorporated two news stu-
dios, a master control room and a central appara-
tus room supported by a le-based infrastructure.
Mahaa TV needed to partner with a company that
could bring fresh design ideas, incorporate new
technologies and complete the work in a timely
and professional manner and within budget.
Solution
Mahaa TV appointed Shaf Broadcast Pvt. Ltd to oversee the build out of these new broadcast facilities. Shaf
Broadcast in turn selected MHz, the UK-based system integrator, to handle the design and engineering plan-
ning of the clients le-based workow as the company had a wealth of expertise in this arena.

24-hour News Channel
FILE-BASED 24-HOUR NEWS
FACILITIES & DSNGS FOR E.TV
Challenge
In early 2008, e.tv, the rst free-to-air television
station in South Africa, unveiled its plans to launch
a 24-hour news channel. These plans necessitated
the construction of two news studios supported by
a server-based infrastructure the rst system of
its kind in South Africa. Furthermore, the project
included two DSNG vehicles for news and current
affairs coverage. As part of its plan e.tv wanted
to minimize its engineering crews in the eld in
order to capitalize on these skills at its production
headquarters.
Time was scarce, as the news channel was sched-
uled to go on air in June 2008. e.tv needed to part-
ner with a system integrator that could complete
the work correctly on time and within budget.
Solution
To facilitate this considerable expansion and to drive the work
forward to meet the planned launch date, e.tv appointed MHz,
a trusted SI to complete the work.
Based around an Omneon Spectrum server and a Dalet News
Suite system, the le-based newsroom includes networked
Apple Final Cut Pro systems for editing and post-production.
MHz supplied around two-thirds of the broadcast equipment
at this facility and completed the turnkey offering including
the design and build of the custom control room furniture and
equipment racks.
To address e.tvs need to minimize its crews in the eld, MHz
developed an innovative satellite remote-control system
M2RC (Megahertz Monitoring Remote Control) to allow e.tv to
remotely control vehicles via a satellite link, using affordable
off-the-shelf IP networking and switching technology.
E.TV South Africa
Why MHz?
Having built e.tvs original studios and le-based newsroom
in Cape Town in the late 1990s, MHz was already consid-
ered to be a trusted SI partner. Consequently MHz was the
natural choice to undertake the design and build of e.tvs
24-hour le-based newsroom, which together with its
M2RC DSNG remote-control technology, broke new ground.
This technology offered real operational and business ben-
ets as it enabled e.tv to reduce crew sizes and engineering
skills in the eld and offer an immediate return on invest-
ment (ROI). With its broad range of in-house skills, MHz
provided e.tv with a one stop shop to deliver a complete
turnkey solution. Furthermore everything was completed
on time and within budget to the highest possible standard
and e.tv is already reaping the benets today.

HD OBS & HD DIRIGIBLE
CONTROL VEHICLE FOR ACS
Challenge
Aerial Camera Systems Limited (ACS), based in
the UK, is one of the worlds leading providers
of specialist camera & broadcast facilities, includ-
ing close-up cameras for photo-nish & goalside
sports coverage, rail-based camera systems, &
airborne craft providing eye-in-the-sky footage
for outdoor festivals & events, stadium sports &
feature lms.
When many of their most important broadcast cli-
ents, such as Sky Sports in Europe, began trans-
missions in high denition, ACS wished to expand
their eet of outside broadcast units to include
at least two HD production vehicles, so that they
could continue to serve their customers without
having to hire expensive third-party HD OB units.
When MHz satised their requirements within the
tight timescale, ACS subsequently contracted MHz
to construct a third HD vehicleand an HD control
vehicle for the renowned ACS Blimp, a 19-me-
tre dirigible, which hangs in the sky over many
sports stadiums & outdoor events, & provides an
aerial feed from an on-board gyro-stabilised SD/
HD cameras.
Solution
The MHz team acted swiftly to full ACS rst order, delivering the rst of the initial two identically specied
HD production vehicles within 8 weeks of the order to ensure that it was ready for its debut booking. Based
around Ford Transit 330MWB vans, the vehicles were custom coachbuilt by MHz to include 4 remote-
controllable Sony HD cameras, high-denition Sony LCD video monitors & a Leitch X75 HD/SD up- & down-
converter.
The third HD production vehicle was based around a larger Iveco Daily 2.3 HPT van, & featured HD remote-
controllable Sony cameras, Sony widescreen & Panasonic HD LCD video monitors, an Evertz Topaz 32x32 HD
router, & a high-denition BES 2x24 jackeld.
The Blimp vehicle was also custom coach-built from a long-wheelbase Iveco Daily, & includes Evertz video
distribution & HD down-conversion hardware, Sony & Panasonic video monitors & a Prospect/Tait radio
talkback system for communication with the broadcast centre.
Why MHz?
Megahertzs reputation for producing OB vehicles within
tight deadlines helped to win them the order for the ini-
tial two camera vans, & ACS then returned for the third,
larger HD production van & the Blimp vehicle, aware that
MHz could understand the business potential of offering
HD footage from their dirigible-mounted camera & would
produce a suitable vehicle on time and within their budg-
et. Phil Beckett, Managing Director of ACS, commented,

TURNKEY BROADCAST STUDIO
& CONTROL ROOM FOR BOOMERANG TV, WALES
Challenge
Independent TV production company Boomerang
TV, part of the successful Welsh Boomerang+ group
of media companies, is responsible for a steadily
growing portfolio of national & international pro-
gramming, from sports to comedy, drama & radio
production.
In 2008, the company won a keenly-fought tender
for the rights to produce & broadcast Planed Plant,
the twice-daily strand of childrens programming
for Welsh-language terrestrial broadcaster S4C.
Due to the daily demands of producing Planed
Plant, Boomerang needed to construct a new dedi-
cated multi-camera production studio & associ-
ated control room fast. Space was available in
Boomerangs new headquarters, which were under
construction at the time, but there was no design,
equipment, or even proper provision for power
& services in the designated part of the building.
And Boomerang needed the studio to be designed,
built & operational within a few months of winning
the contract.
Solution
Boomerangs original brief, which they put out to tender, was for a server-based studio with an entirely le-
based workow, but after consulting the MHz team, they agreed that the available budget was insufcient to
do this concept justice.
MHz drafted a more cost-effective alternative design for the production studio, employing three Sony cameras
(one manned, two remotely operated) & maintaining some of the le-based operation of the original concept
by using an affordable tapeless Grass Valley Turbo disk-based video recorder as well as more traditional Sony
Betacam VTRs.
AVID video & 360 Systems Shortcut audio editing systems were included to allow the preparation of pre-
recorded segments for use in the middle of live transmissions, & the completed facility was connected to S4Cs
transmission centre by means of a dark-bre link.
Why MHz?
From the moment they were awarded the contract from
the half-a-dozen companies that tendered for the new Boo-
merang studio, MHz managed the entire project, not only
designing the system, procuring the equipment and con-
structing the custom furniture required to house it, but also
liaising with and coordinating Boomerangs architects, heat-
ing and electrical contractors during the construction phase
of the project.
According to Richard Moss, who oversaw the studio instal-
lation for the Boomerang+ group, MHz won this contract
partly on the strength of this ability, and partly because the
quote for realising the entire project, from design through
to installation and staff training, was very competitive.
The studio was completed on time and budget, leaving time
for full staff training before production of Planed Plant
switched to Boomerang.

HD-READY UPLINK VEHICLES
FOR ART SPORTS COVERAGE
Challenge
Arab Radio Television Corporation (ART) is one of the
leading Arabic pay TV & entertainment content pro-
viders. With Headquarters in Saudi Arabia & major
transmission facilities in Jordan & Italy, ART produces
Arabic-language family dramas, documentaries & live
sports programs to a global audience.
In late 2006, the Corporation won an exclusive con-
tract to broadcast Saudi Arabian football champion-
ship matches, which required the speedy expansion
of their current outside broadcast operation, together
with trained staff to operate them. The vehicles had
to be suitable for use in the arid Saudi climate, & were
also required to be affordably upgradable to HD op-
eration in the near future.
Solution
MHz understood ARTs urgent need for a swiftly de-
ployed solution, & quickly delivered plans for two
future-proof HD-ready SD uplink vehicles, designed
to operate in high temperatures & resistant to air-
borne sand & dust.
The plans included HD-capable components for all
of the most important aspects of the vehicles infra-
structure, including Leitch HD/SD 8x8 routers, BES
2x24 HD video jackelds, Marshall HD-capable TFT
video monitors & high-denition Evertz distribution
ampliers & cabling, so that any future HD upgrade
would be cost-effectively implemented.
The MHz team manufactured the vehicles in-house
& trained ARTs engineers within the available time-
scale of ten weeks, ensuring that they were ready
to begin transmission of the championship matches
on time.
Arab Radio Television
Why MHz?
According to ARTs Director of Engineering Hassan Merei,
the Corporation chose MHz for two reasons. Firstly, thanks
to its efciently integrated in-house design & coach-build-
ing teams, MHz has an established track record of deliver-
ing well-engineered vehicles within tight deadlines. Speedy
deployment was an essential business requirement for ART,
saving them the high cost of hiring in vehicles from abroad
to handle the football coverage.
Secondly, MHzs quote for the HD-upgradable uplinks was
itself very competitive. When MHz delivered for the rst
two uplinks vehicles on time & on budget, ART contracted
the team to produce a further three vehicles to the same
designtestimony to their condence & satisfaction in MHz
as an SI partner.

HD FILE-BASED PRODUCTION
WORKFLOW FOR EPIC
Challenge
EPIC, the East of England Production Innovation
Centre, is one of the most advanced broadcast pro-
duction facilities in Europe. The company has HD
studios suitable for drama light entertainment,
situation comedy, chat show, discussion & small
channel hosting as well as post production &
training facilities for hire.
Owned by Norfolk County Council, the centre was
created from Anglia Televisions former news &
light entertainment studios. EPICs remit was to
ensure the continuation of Norwichs long history
as a centre of excellence for television production.
In early 2008 it received funding from the East
of England Development Agency to provide state-
of-the-art facilities to rival other production com-
panies while also offering training opportunities
on the latest technology for new entrants into the
business.
The money allocated to this project enabled EPIC
to upgrade its production, post-production &
broadcast facilities to high-denition.
Solution
Having won a two-stage EU-wide tender process for the EPIC project, MHz designed & built a cost-effective
le-based workow solution that incorporated three studios. It was necessary for MHz to replace the entire
existing equipment inventory as well as the installation of HD-capable bre optic cabling.
The new equipment included a range of products from Thomson Grass Valley such as a K2 media server &
three Kayak HD-capable digital production vision mixers - one for each of the centres three studios. MHz
worked closely with the EPIC team to integrate the Thomson K2 media server, with an existing storage area
network (SAN) totaling 60 TB of storage. The K2 servers & the SAN storage provided seamless integration with
the Apple Final Cut Pro and the Avid editing systems, enabling on-SAN editing in the post domain. This created
a truly tapeless post production workow at this new facility. Cameras were based on six new high-denition
Sony HDC-1500 cameras congured with Canon lenses. In the production control room, the monitor stack
was completely replaced using JVC at-screen HD monitors & plasma displays. In addition, racks & facilities
furniture were designed, built & installed by MHz.
Why MHz?
According to EPICs Head of Engineering, David Hazel, MHz
won the contract for this major upgrade at EPIC because
not only did the company understand our needs, it was able
to provide the complete solution within budget & on time.
Hazel continues MHz created a well thought out solution - a
complete le-based workow that is as good for our com-
mercial broadcast clients as it is for the students learning
the latest production techniques.
Hazel also singles out MHzs project management for some
well-earned praise. It was a complex project to implement
& the MHz team completed the installation with little impact
to our commercial clients business or our trainee students.
In fact the implementation was quick & thorough.
