provides the virtual machine with all its CPU, memory, disk and
network resources.

Launch ESX Server installation
• Launch the installation (default is graphical mode)

Early installer steps
• CD media test
• Choose Install,
not Upgrade
• Use mouse or
TAB to move

Caution: watch for unpartitioned LUNs
• If any LUNs are unpartitioned, you will receive a pop-up

warning for each

Virtual Infrastructure (VI) client
• The VI Client is a graphical

user interface used to
configure the ESX Server and
manage its VMs
• At VI Client login screen:
• Enter ESX Server hostname or IP
address
• User root
• Password for user root

Host-based licensing
• License files are stored on individual ESX Server hosts

• Advantage of host-based licensing:
• One less piece of infrastructure
• Sufficient for a small, manageable number of ESX Servers
• Disadvantage of host-based licensing:
• Licenses do not float
• Features that require VirtualCenter cannot be used
• Two types of license editions: Starter and Standard

• Install the ESX Server software
• Access the ESX Server using the VI Client
• Display, then modify the ESX Server’s configuration

Pre-installation checklist
Network
 Supported Ethernet adapters
 At least one; additional Ethernet adapters are desired for NIC
teaming
 Network connectivity to a PC for management
 Network configuration details
 IP address, hostname, and netmask for ESX Server
 Gateway IP address and DNS (nameserver) IP Address
Software
 VMware ESX Server CD and host-based license file
 Guest OS (CD-ROM or preferably ISO file)
 License keys for guest OS, if any

ESX Server sizing: VMkernel resources
Sum desired disk sizes for all VMs;

Sum desired RAM maxima for all VMs, or
include space for all other VMs’ files,
minima if overcommitment is desired
which includes the VM swap file
Sum needed CPU cycles for all VMs;

Sum needed bandwidth for all VMs
allocate more if GigE is to be used

ESX Server sizing: Service console resources
Up to 800 MB Service console

(272 MB by default) filesystems
One CPU One NIC

How SAN boot works
• Server BIOS must designate Fibre Channel

card as boot controller
• Fibre Channel card must be configured to
initiate a connection to the target boot LUN

Preparations for booting ESX Server from SAN LUN
• If you plan to boot this ESX Server from a LUN on a Fibre
Channel SAN:
• Configure BIOS so that Fibre Channel adapter is the boot device,
and desired LUN is the boot volume
• Disable built-in
IDE controller
if present

Module summary
• The ESX installer allows installing to a local disk drive or a

remote SAN LUN
• Configure your ESX Server using the Virtual Infrastructure
(VI) Client
• Always check the compatibility guides first to ensure that
you are using supported hardware for your ESX Server
• Install ESX Server to boot from SAN if your ESX Server
does not have a local disk, such as in a Blades
environment
