1 ) What is Multimedia? Explain different input/output devices used in Multimedia applications. Also explain different components of Multimedia System.

Multimedia is media and content that uses a combination of different content forms. The term can be used as a noun (a medium with multiple content forms) or as an adjective describing a medium as having multiple content forms. The term is used in contrast to media which only use traditional forms of printed or hand-produced material. Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content forms. Multimedia is usually recorded and played, displayed or accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices, but can also be part of a live performance Multimedia (as an adjective) also describes electronic media devices used to store and experience multimedia content. Multimedia is distinguished from mixed media in fine art; by including audio, for example, it has a broader scope. The term "rich media" is synonymous for interactive multimedia. Hypermedia can be considered one particular multimedia application.
Multimedia Input output device:

Keyboard and mouse are two important components for ant multimedia pc. Since multimedia computers are accessed using a graphical user interface, therefore mouse is an essential input device for it. Here special mention is to be made about two important input output device. These are the sound speaker, which produce sound output and microphone which are used for online recording of sound using various multimedia software.
Components of multimedia

(a) Textual information: All multimedia production contain some amount of text, even some might contain a large amount of textual matter. The text can have various types of fonts and size to suit the professional pretention of the multimedia software.
(b) Image: Another important and interesting components of multimedia components is graphic one of the basic fact in multimedia production is that , people do not like reading large amount of textual matter on the screen. Graphic are used more often text to explain a concept, present background information etc. Bitmap image: A bitmap image assumes an image to consist of two dimensional squares, which are called the pixel or dotes on the screen, the size and the quality of such image depends on the pixel density and number of colors it uses. As bitmap image are stored as large files and you require large amount of disk space to deal with it. There are various formats such as PCX, TIF, BMP, and gif ETC

Vector image: Other formats for storing images is vector or object oriented format: In this format an image is formed as a set of straight or curved lines instead of dots. A line can be represented by mathematical equation, whose number can be stored as asset of binary codes (c) Animation: also plays vital part in the multimedia Program. The dedicated hardware and software built into the system speed. An animation is just a continuous series of still image that are displayed in a sequence. There are mainly two types of animation used in multimedia, namely 2d and 3d animation. (d) Digital Audio: The most common reason for using digital audio in computer is to be able to use multimedia in its full potential. The most common requirements are to be able to input sound such as a spoken commentary on an image or a document. The sound is a repeated pattern of pressure in the air and a microphone converts a sound wave to the shape and frequency of the electrical wave is identical to the shape and frequency of the sound wave and the clarity of what we gear is entirely dependent on the shape and frequency of the sound wave. Sound can also be recorded and reproduced using digital signals and the error can be reduced drastically in the digital recording of the sound (e) Digital video: Digitized video is one of the many technologies used in the development of interactive multimedia. it is one of the way to play back and record video in multimedia program it offers a wide range of flexibility as compared to standard video signal. Unlike regular video, quality of image would not degrade copy as digital video is made up of a digital code and not an electrical analog signal. However the final output depends on how the video image is converted to digital from during the development phase.

2) a) Explain the need of communication technologies for providing Multimedia Services.

The advantage of computing, communication and creation of relevant standards have lead to the beginning of an era where people getting multimedia facilities at home. May be in the form of an interactive T.V or through World Wide Web These services may include:

Basic television services Interactive entertainment Digital audio Video on demand Home shopping through e-mail Financial transactions using e-commerce Interactive single and multiuser games Digital multimedia libraries Electronic versions of newspapers, magazines etc.
Cable TV and telephone companies, dot com companies, publishing industry etc. are the main infrastructure provides for these facilities. The networking technology along with the improved compiling and compression technologies are delivering interactive services profitably. The entertainment cable, telephone, and internet passed industries companies are trying to design wide verity of such multimedia services.

(b) What is Animation? Explain use of Animation in Multimedia applications.

Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. The effect is an optical illusion of motion due to the phenomenon of persistence of vision, and can be created and demonstrated in several ways. The most common method of presenting animation is as a motion picture or video program, although there are other methods. Traditional animation (also called cell animation or hand-drawn animation) was the process used for most animated films of the 20th century. The individual frames of a traditionally animated film are photographs of drawings, which are first drawn on paper. To create the illusion of movement, each drawing differs slightly from the one before it. The animators' drawings are traced or photocopied onto transparent acetate sheets called cells, which are filled in with paints in assigned colors or tones on the side opposite the line drawings. The completed character cells are photographed one-by-one onto motion picture film against a painted background by a rostrum camera. Stop-motion animation is used to describe animation created by physically manipulating real-world objects and photographing them one frame of film at a time to create the illusion of movement. There are many different types of stop-motion animation, usually named after the type of media used to create the animation. Computer software is widely available to create this type of animation. 3 ) What Multimedia Authoring tool? List the features required in the Multimedia Authoring tools. Compare and contrast the features of Flash and Authorware.
Authoring can be described as a creating highly interactive application in which the information can flow in the bot the direction i.e. from application to user and from user to application multimedia authoring tools has helped in creating higher-quality audio and video application with very little expertise. Authoring does not require a team of programmers, Instructor, corporate communication, and content specialists with no previous programming experience should be able to learn and use the authoring environment

(a) Those that relied entirely on the point and click, and (b)
Those that are required simple scripting. Multimedia authoring tools can be evaluated by performing certain test, which include the creation of non- interactive multimedia computer-based training (cbt) application, catalog creation and even authoring for the World Wide Web. The advantage of using object- oriented programming has been inculcated in the authoring products like Everst Authoring System offers object instancing, while media versa and oracle media object allows to add new methods and events to existing object. Supplied template in athorware and media versa saves the time in implementing specific functionality. Authorware: Authorware is a dependable industrial-strength environment that allows multiple people to contribute to an application. Artist can load a library with media. Programmers can provide template for complex interaction and interface designers can put everything together. And one non-programming designer can even do the entire job alone. Some icon in authorware can manipulate media on the screen. They can display and erase graphic, move or animate objects, paly.AVI and Quick time digital movies as well as WAV sound files and access videodisk and videotape players. Designing in authorware is also allowed. Authore elegantly provides full data integrity for its naming of icons and variable. Changes a variable name and it changes everywhere it's used. Authorware can runtimes changes the flow in response to a user keep score and access laserdisc players via dialog box.

Design a multimedia package that helps in advertising of a product used for "Baby Care".

You must follow the standard methodology for development of multimedia. You must fill up various templates required for the development of Multimedia. (Refer Unit 4 of your CS-66 course material) Present a prototype of your design using MS-Office tools. Your multimedia package should include at least 10 slides having suitable graphics, simple animation and few audio clips. (Audio clips need not be recorded professionally but can be recorded using built in microphone of simple multimedia computer. Make assumptions wherever necessary.

* Methodology of Development of Multimedia : Planning the Multimedia Programme/application
-Defining the Goal -Outlining. -Logic Flowchart -Program Storyboard -Copyright issue and its management Defining the Goal

The Goal of a multimedia application is defined by the scope of work, which is a Written description of the proposed multimedia project. The scope of work clarifies Your ideas and goals regarding the proposed project. It also helps the development team members to visualize the basic objectives of the programme.

Once the goal and the objectives of the programme are clear, the next step is to create Outline of the project. An interactive multimedia presentation may not necessary be Linear presentation like a slide show or a video programme. It has the capacity of Branching. The outline of a programme represents branching in a Multimedia Programme. The content specialist does the outlining.
-Logic Flowchart

The logic flow chart is an important component of an Interactive Multimedia Programme. A flow chart is a graphical road map of the proposed application. The
Authoring team takes the help of this flowchart to produce the final multimedia Application. A flow chart represents the choices available from each topic to other Topics. The complexity of these flow charts is dependent on the applications being Developed. The flowcharts, which illustrate games, are among the most complex flowcharts.
-Program Storyboard

The storyboard is a graphical representation of the proposed multimedia project. The Storyboard is an extension of ideas presented in the programme script. It is presented With a series of templates used for various purposes.
-Copyright issue and its management

While designing multimedia application, copyright issue plays a crucial role because of two fundamental reasons. Multimedia involves use of multiple media each of that media element may be protected under the copyright laws. Original multimedia works are also protected by copyrights.
