Wacker Neuson CEO: Developing future workforce vital for industry
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR At an event geared to tomorrows workforce, the president of a local manufacturing firm presented the case for blue collar careers. As a country, you can see that manufacturing is going to become more important down the road, Christopher Barnard, president and chief executive officer of Wacker Neuson Corporation, said during opening comments at the Manufacturing and Career Expo at Davians in Menomonee Falls Oct. 9. The company is a leading manufacturing of light and compact equipment. Its American headquarters are located in Menomonee Falls. The Manufacturing and Career Expo which is organized by the Menomonee Falls, Germantown and Sussex chambers of commerce featured booths from more than 20 area manufacturing firms. Students from the Menomonee Falls, Germantown and Hamilton school districts attended during sessions on Oct. 10. There was also time set aside for the public at large to attend the event. During his opening comments, Barnard said that every $1 in manufacturing produces a mulitplier of $1.35. Also according to data cited by Barnard: If manufacturing in the United States was a country, it would be the 10th largest country in the world. The manufacturing sector in the United States is slightly smaller than Russia but larger than Spain, India, Canada and 60 percent the size of

...Energy key part of manufacturing growth

From page 1
Germany; In the United States, the average value added per worker in manufacturing is $118,419. In China, it is $13,266. The value added per U.S. manufacturing worker is almost 10 times the value of China, Barnard said. Barnard said manufacturing should be the engine for the future and it should be an area in which both schools and public policy focus for such a long period of time. Unfortunately, we dont see that happening. According to Barnard, the United States has gone from being an energy importer toward being an energy exporter. By 2020, the United States will be energy independent, he said. Seven years ago, you would never, ever have believed that was going to happen, he said. The implication of that will be an increased emphasis on jobs in the manufacturing sector, as there will be 3.3 million new jobs being created due to energy independence. Also, $468 billion will be added to the gross domestic product and $258 billion will be added to the annual industrial output. The bottom line is we have to continue to focus in manufacturing as our future. In the next five to 10 years, its going to be very clear that the United States is going to be the preeminent manufacturer in the world, Barnard said. He said the single biggest challenge is finding the people to work in the manufacturing sector and explained that businesses in the manufacturing sector will have to continue to change and plan for the jobs of tomorrow. If we do that properly, then people will look at manufacturing not as a plant, not as an old job classification, not as whether youre union or non-union, as a machinist or an assembler theyll be looking at manufacturing as the anchor on which this country is going to grow for the next 10 to 15 years, Barnard said. I really mean that because that really is our future. Harvey Neu of Neus Building Center added that a strong manufacturing community makes for a strong community strong schools, strong housing market, strong everything. Neu added that he is amazed what is produced in the area which is created by the local workforce and used globally. We want that workforce to continue to grow and support these manufacturers, Neu said.

The following information was provided by the Germantown School District. The Germantown High School "5th Annual Powder Puff School Sponsored Charity Event" was held Oct. 2 at Datka Stadium. In semi-final action, the juniors beat the sophomores 30-12 and the freshmen upset the seniors 20-0. In the championship game, the Freshmen beat the juniors in a highly competitive game with a final score of 32-26. Jenni Poss had three touchdowns for the Juniors. Freshman Jade Wahlgren had an electrifying 60 yard punt return for a touchdown and Mackenzie Schmitz had four touchdowns, including a 60 yarder with 55 seconds left in regulation. She also had a 38 yard touchdown reception on a fourth and 27 play. Congratulations to the Freshmen team and special thanks to Senior Katie Shebesta who helped to organize the event and to the staff members who donated their time to help with this event. Thank you to all players, coaches and students for good sportsmanship and appropriate behavior during the event! $1,160 was raised in gate receipts with 80% of the proceeds going to the St. Boniface food pantry. In addition, proceeds from the concession sales, run by Youth Futures, will be donated to the "Holiday Shopping for the Unfortunate."

Football: Falls, Germantown qualify for playoffs

Menomonee Falls took an early lead and turned back key drives from West Allis Central on the way to a 35-19 win over the Bulldogs. With the win, Menomonee Falls qualifies for the playoffs. Menomonee Falls got on the board first on a six-play drive that ended with a 1-yard run by Christian Almonte which finished a six-play drive at the 7:08 mark. The extra point kick failed, giving Menomonee Falls a 6-0 lead. After trading possessions, Menomonee Falls took a 14-0 lead with 38 seconds left at the end of the first quarter as Almonte finished a five-play drive with a 2-yard run. Almonte then ran for the two-point conversion. The teams exchanged scores in the second quarter, with Central getting on the board Brandon Maglio who came in for Will Konecny after Konecny was shaken up on the previous play connected with Brent Hunter on a 7-yard pass play to finish off a 9-play drive at the 9:12 mark. Central had an opportunity to even the score after receiving a Menomonee Falls fumble as the Bulldogs mounted a 12-play drive. However, a fourth down attempt failed, and Menomonee Falls responded with a drive that ended with an 18-yard run by Almonte for a touchdown with 53 seconds left before halftime. Menomonee Falls scored 14 points in the third quarter, with Almonte giving the Indians 28-7 lead on a 51-yard run at the 6:46 mark of the third quarter. Central responded with a drive that ended when Konecny connected with Darren Walker on a 6-yard pass play at the 4:03 mark (the extra point attempt failed). On Menomonee Falls next possession, Bryce McMurtry connected with Brady Schneider on a 34-yard pass play that gave Menomonee Falls a 35-13 lead. The final score of the game came on a 6yard pass play from Konecny to Maico Navejar with 6:15 left in the game. Almonte ran 34 times for 267 yards while Vechart ran 20 times for 105 yards. Germantown 52, Nicolet 0: Germantown qualified for the playoffs the same weekend they were celebrating Homecoming. Dwayne Lawhorn competed four of nine passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Girls volleyball: Falls wins home tourney

Menomonee Falls was on the verge of losing its home tournament to its key Greater Metro Conference rival Oct. 5, as the Indians who split the first two games of the best-of-three set were trailing Divine Savior Holy Angels 12-14 with the Dashers serving for the win. Menomonee Falls refused to lose, scoring five of the last six points to win the Menomonee Falls Invite with a 25-20, 15-25, 17-15 victory over the Dashers. "It's a great win, but we know we're going to have to play them again if we want get to where we need to get to," Menomonee Falls Coach J.C. Bruns said afterward. "Enjoy it now, but be ready for the next time." The title match started minutes after Menomonee Falls went to a third game to beat Kettle Moraine Lutheran, 2729, 25-14, 15-9. Committee supports restriction on rifle hunting

The Germantown General Government and Finance Committee supported a request from Police Chief Peter Hoell to keep the current restrictions on the types of weapons used for hunting. During an interview last week, Hoell explained that under current state law, firearms hunting is restricted to shotguns, muzzle loaders and pistols while the use of rifles is prohibited. The law was changed so that beginning Nov. 1 rifles can also be used for deer hunting. The law does allow municipalities to place restrictions on the types of weapons used as well as where hunting is allowed. Currently, hunting is limited in Germantown to areas north of Freistadt Road. In addition, Hoell said hunting is allowed in other areas in cases in which a resident can show crop damage has occurred. Hoell said he is recommending keeping the restriction on rifles in place due to the distance a shot from rifle can travel. In the hands of an ethical shooter, (theres) no problem with using rifles in the village, Hoell said. By contrast, Hoell said he was concerned that rifles in the hands of unethical shooters could be a safety concern. The committee, by a 2-1 vote, recommended sending the request to keep the rifle restriction in place to the Village Board for final consideration. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

HUNTERS PROTECT YOUR HEARING DURING HUNTING SEASON!

People who use firearms are more likely to develop hearing loss than those who do not. Firearm users tend to have high-frequency permanent hearing loss, which means that they may have trouble hearing speech sounds like "s," "th," or "v" and other highpitched sounds. The good news is that people can prevent hearing loss by using appropriate hearing protective devices (HPDs), such as earmuffs or earplugs. However, studies have shown that only about half of shooters wear hearing protection all the time when shooting. Hunters are even less likely to wear hearing protection because they say they cannot hear approaching game or other noises. Call us today to schedule your free appointment so we can help you choose the type of hearing protection that is right for you.

ALL THE SERVICES OF A LARGER FACILITY OFFERED IN A COZY, FAMILY HOME ATMOSPHERE

TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR HEARING

Always use some type of hearing protection any time you fire a gun. Always have disposable HPDs handymake them part of your gear. Double-protect your ears, like putting muffs over plugs, when shooting big-bore firearms. Choose smaller caliber firearms for shooting and hunting. Choose single-shot firearms instead of lever action, pump, or semi-automatic guns. Avoid shooting in groups or in reverberant environments. Use electronic or nonlinear HPDs for hunting.
