PERKINS QUALITY SCHOOL PLAN 2013-2014

We have developed the Perkins Quality School Plan to share with our teachers, families, community partners, and Boston Public Schools. We used the Spring 2013 MCAS data to highlight our areas of strength and opportunities for improvement. Because we know our parents are strong partners and advocates for their childrens success, we wanted to provide you with a detailed report of our findings. We have been working on this plan since August and are sharing our 3 School-Wide Student Learning Challenges and a plan for how we will meet those challenges: Student Learning Challenges #1 Based upon the 2012-2013 MCAS data, we will increase our Student Growth Performance (SGP) from 37 to 51. In order to do this, 75% of our students will score 75% or higher correct on Key Ideas and Details items. #2 Based upon the 2012-2013 MCAS data, we will increase our Student Growth Performance (SGP) from 37 to 51. In order to do this, 70% of all students will score a 2 or higher on open response items. #3 Based upon the 2012-2013 MCAS data, we will increase our Males Student Growth Performance by 50% in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Our Action Plan to Meet the Student Learning Challenges We will hold professional development specifically on the Key Ideas and Details Domain where teachers share best practices in grade level teams, ensure students are exposed to text-dependent questions, and provide models and supports for successful responses. We will create and collectively assess open response items for End of Unit Assessments using the school-based rubrics (i.e. reading response journals). We will create opportunities for students to be exposed and respond to open response questions across all content areas and specialties. We will participate in professional development on differentiation and learning styles, especially for males. We will affirm, celebrate, and support students in our school-wide positive behavior intervention programs, Boys/Girls Groups, and the Big Brother/Big Sister Mentoring Program.

How Perkins Parents Can Support Student Learning

We believe parents are our partners in education. We need your assistance to improve student performance. Listed below are a few suggestions to support your childs learning: Make sure your child gets adequate rest and arrives to school on time ready to learn. Read! Read! Read! Please check with your childs teacher to identify their reading level and have your child read for at least 30 minutes every night. For beginning readers please read to them for at least 30 minutes every night. Visit your nearby public library for free fun family-friendly activities. Ensure that your child is completing and turning in homework. If they do not come home with homework, contact your childs teacher or create time for your child to review assignments from earlier in the week. Please refer to the BPS Family Learning Guides for ideas on how to extend learning beyond the classroom. Ensure your child is participating in quality after school programs that support classroom learning. Communicate with your childs teacher weekly regarding his/her academic performance. A consistent message of high expectations and achievement from the school and home is key to student success. Please take advantage of Parent University. This is offered in collaboration with the BPS Office of Family and Student Engagement. For more information please visit www.bpsfamilies.org or contact Ms. Evelyn CorreaGonzalez, our Family & Community Outreach Coordinator. Please be an active participant in your childs education by joining the School Site Council/School Parent Council. Ask questions. Visit. Be Present in the School Community!
