month of regular season play that ends on Nov. 9. Conference and division races will be decided over the next four weeks and if teams are going to make a move towards winning a title, now's the time. A key battle in the SIAC West looms this Saturday (1 p.m.) as defending conference champion, current division leader and BCSP No. 6 Tuskegee (5-1, 1-0 W) hosts Stillman (4-2, 1-1 W) in a match-up of the top two scoring teams in the league. Stillman, currently tied with Lane for second place in the division, is led by SIAC passing leader Josh Straughn (266.8 ypg., 10 TDs, 3 ints.). Tuskegee features the league's second best ground attack (196.3 ypg.). Stillman's only division loss was a 28-27 decision to Lane two weeks ago. Tuskegee beat Lane 42-14 on Sept 28. Also in the West, Lane (4-2, 1-1) has its homecoming vs. Central State (1-5, 0-0) at 2 p.m.. and Kentucky State (4-2, 0-1) is at Miles' (2-3, 0-1) homecoming at 4 p.m. In the SIAC East, Morehouse (2-4, 0-1) is at Albany State's (1-4, 0-0) homecoming while Benedict (2-4, 0-1) has its homecoming vs. Clark-Atlanta (2-3, 1-1). Both games get under way at 2 p.m. East Division leader Fort Valley State (24, 2-0) has an out-of-conference date Thursday (6 p.m.) at undefeated Washburn (6-0), the 13thranked team nationally in the AFCA NCAA Div. II Coaches Poll. In the CIAA South, BCSP No. 3 and division leader Winston-Salem State (5-1, 3-0), ranked 16th in the latest AFCA Div. II poll, is at Saint Augustine's (3-3, 2-1), currently tied with Fayetteville State behind WSSU in the division standings. FSU (3-3, 2-1) plays at Johnson C. Smith (4-2, 2-2) at 2 p.m.

Also in the South, Livingstone (2-4, 1-3) is at homecoming (1 p.m.) at Shaw (3-3, 1-2). Virginia State's (5-1, 3-0) is the North Division leader and the Trojans have their homecoming Saturday (2 p.m.) vs. division rival Bowie State (2-4, 0-3). The game will be carried live on the CIAA TV Network Second place is also up for grabs in the North as Chowan (3-3, 2-1) visits Virginia Union (24, 2-1) for homecoming (1 p.m.). Also, Lincoln (1-5, 0-3) is at homecoming at Elizabeth City State (1-5, 1-2). In the MEAC, BCSP No. 1 Bethune-Cookman (5-1, 2-0) entertains Savannah State (1-6, 0-3) in an effort to catch idle South Carolina State (5-2, 3-0) at the top of the league standings. North Carolina A&T (3-2, 1-2) tries to end a two-game losing streak at home (1 p.m.) vs. Delaware State (2-4, 2-1). Hampton (1-5, 1-1) is at Norfolk State (2-4, 2-1) in their annual backyard brawl, the Battle of the Bay (1 p.m.). Two MEAC homecomings are on tap with Morgan State (1-5, 1-1) at North Carolina Central (3-3, 1-1) and Howard (1-5, 0-3) at Florida A&M (2-4, 1-1), both at 2 p.m.. 2013-14 CIAA preseason basketball picks unveiled
HAMPTON, Va. At the end of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association annual fall meeting of coaches, administrators and studentathletes in Charlotte, N.C. earlier this month, the 2013-14 Basketball Media Day was held with preseason all-conference players and the predicted order of finish selected. Defending men's champion Bowie State and Winston-Salem State were predicted as the men's basketball North and South division winners, respectively, and Elizabeth City State and defending women's champion Shaw were predicted to win their divisions' women's championship. The 2013 Preseason All-CIAA Team also was announced. WinstonSalem State led the pack with two All-CIAA players on the men's and women's teams. CIAA Commissioner Jacqie Carpenter discussed the fact the conference was now operating in the black and that $1.5 million in scholarships had been paid during the prior year. She also announced updates regarding the bid process to host future CIAA Basketball Championships. The 2014 CIAA Basketball Tournament, February 24 March 1, is the final year of the current contract. CIAA will issue a Request for Bids from cities throughout the region to host future tournaments, and a decision is currently expected around the first of the year. "On behalf of our staff, membership and student-athletes, we thank the city of Charlotte for being a gracious host since 2006," said Carpenter. "We look forward to another incredible season of basketball that will culminate in a tournament that showcases the CIAA's legacy of competition, sportsmanship and achievement on and off the court." The CIAA Basketball Season officially tips-off in November, with Winston-Salem State's mens team taking on Duke Nov. 1 and the Winston-Salem State women's team taking on North Carolina State on Nov. 3.

Benedict, Clark Atlanta top SIAC hoop picks

ATLANTATwo-time defending men's SIAC basketball champion Benedict and defending women's champion Clark Atlanta are preseason picks to repeat in voting by the respective men's and women's coaches associations. Despite head coach Fred Watson having to replace five starters, Benedict was predicted to repeat as champions of the men's SIAC East Division and overall in the conference. Clark Atlanta, led by Preseason Player of the Year, guard Conisha Hicks, was the unanimous pick to prevail on the women's side in both the East Division and overall. Three-time All-SIAC forward Brandon Davey of Fort Valley State was tabbed SIAC men's preseason player of the year.
