Garlic Varieties 2013-14

Key: H = Hardneck (non-storing variety) S = Softneck (storing variety) st = Can be stored (some hardnecks may have storage traits)

Notes 1. Year listed is the year the crop was harvested (and sown Oct/Nov of previous year). 2. From 2013 I have a smaller garden and no allotment so are only growing the more unusual varieties of garlic that are hard more difficult to obtain in the UK. That means a reliable garlic like Solent Wight is no longer included in my growing list as it is easy to obtain in the UK. n/r means no record, i.e. I forgot to record how many cloves I planted etc. The Winter & Spring conditions of 2012-13 were different from previous year. In 2011-12 it was a hard Winter then very wet Spring, and Summer, but 2012-13 was a hard Winter but drier Spring and warm Summer. The 2013 garlic was dug up in August 2013. Up to 2013 harvest, the garlic was grown in Oxford clay with added compost. For the coming season in 2013/14 I have planted it in c. 30cms raised beds with compost and well-rotted manure, so it will be interesting to see what difference, or not, this makes to the crops of each variety next year. Where I list number of cloves per dish, this is based on the dish having a garlic flavour but not an overpowering one. It is also subjective, so what I like might be different to how strong or not you like garlic. Use as a guide and adapt for yourself as appropriate.

Using this document This is a personal record of garlic varieties I am growing which is hopefully of use to others. I am happy for people to use and share the document but would be grateful if you could link back/attribute to my blog where appropriate, such as if you add it to your own blog or website or pass it on to friends etc. Julieanne Porter http://www.gwenfarsgarden.info/ @GwenfarsGarden

Medium sized cloves Did well in 2012 wet weather. I find the flavour to be not as hot as Garlic Store suggests, but strong enough to give a good flavour to any dish. Reliable cropping in UK.

Medium bulbs, plus bulbils Some were affected by the wet weather of 2012. Those that came up were a mix of good sizes and small sizes. Will continue to grow as good medium flavour and stores well.

Oct13: Interesting to see some bulbs were a good medium size and some smaller. Not sure on why the difference. Will grow largest/best ones on for next year. Planted mid-Oct13 in c. 30cms raised beds with compost and well-rotted manure.

2014

Flavour Medium, couple of cloves per dish for two.

Storage c. 5 months, plus longer but goes softer (so probably loses some of its potency).

Medium-large cloves, plus bulbils. Used Oct10 quite strong only need clove in dish for 2-4 people (depending on how strong you want it) Was quiet effected by the wet conditions and produced smaller bulbs. Will continue to grow (using best from this year) and see if I can get a better crop next year. Has a strong but not overpowering flavour and stores well. Oct13: Did better this year. Consistently good medium cloves. Slightly less number of cloves (6 in 2010) but happy with quality and will keep growing. Planted mid-Oct13 in c. 30cms raised beds with compost and well-rotted manure.

Oct13: This is such a reliable garlic, did well again even though different weather conditions compared to previous season. Planted mid-Oct13 in c. 30cms raised beds with compost and well-rotted manure.

2014

Flavour Medium, really nice flavour. 1-2 cloves per dish.

Storage c. 5 or more months (so probably loses some of its potency beyond 5 months).

Small bulbs Medium. Does well in clay soil and survived the awful rainy 2012 weather to produce a decent crop compared to some other varieties during this season. Oct13: Another good consistent garlic that did well again even though different weather conditions compared to previous season. Planted mid-Oct13 in c. 30cms raised beds with compost and well-rotted manure.

2014

Flavour Medium strength, good flavour, 1-2 cloves per dish.

Storage This stores reasonably well for a hardneck. Really good quality for 4-5 months, but will last longer, though cloves do go a bit softer (so will lose its potency).

Large bulbs Bulb not as large as previous, probably effected by wet weather. Has been a really good grower in the pass, so keeping the best and growing again next year. Oct13: Much reduced in size for most of the bulbs. Given it reduced size last season too, it is possible that my stock isnt so good. Will grow again for 2014 and see what happens, as it is a nice garlic and has good storage capabilities. Planted mid-Oct13 in c. 30cms raised beds with compost and well-rotted manure.

Small-medium bulbs Medium bulbs, did well in wet conditions of 2012. Very reliable, looks good and stores well. Oct13: Like with Rosewood, this one has reduced in size for most of the bulbs. Possibly my stock isnt so good. Will grow again for 2014 and see what happens, as it is a nice garlic and has good storage capabilities. Planted mid-Oct13 in c. 30cms raised beds with compost and well-rotted manure.

Used late Oct 10 - Medium-strong flavour. Use clove per dish for 2. Some rotted in the ground, but those that did well were good size garlics. Obviously doesnt like heavy wet clay, compared to Garlic Farm the comments above from the US. Will continue to grow as flavour good.

Oct13: Large bulbs this year. Given in 2012 it didnt do as well in the wet Spring, it seems it does do well in long Winters and drier Springs. Pleased it has returned as a good garlic. Planted mid-Oct13 in c. 30cms raised beds with compost and well-rotted manure.

2014

Flavour Strong, but not an overpowering flavour, 1-2 cloves per dish.

Storage c. 3 months. One to use quickly.
