echnical innovations in the Nerang Sands T Bypass System

Located on the Gold Coast surf beach, this bypasses littoral drift sand from the south across the entrance to the Gold Coast Waterway to prevent build up of sand bars. It includes a number of technical innovations such as fixed jet pumps buried beneath the sand and a launder collecting the discharge from the pumps and transferring the sand slurry to the transfer pump station on the shore which pumps the sand under the entrance for disposal 12.20 Allan Thomas, Slurry Systems

Research and development in slurry

1. Innovations in slurry mixing, transport Introducing innovative technologies to address challenges in slurry mixing and slurry transport, case examples. 2. Reducing wear and erosion maintenance in slurry flow Slurry flow erosion research, wear prediction, designs for reduced erosion to slurry pipe bend, and slurry pipe joints. Introducing CSIRO testing facility and tool to detect erosion cause by vortices due to pipe defects. 3. Smart Sensing System for Monitoring Slurry Pipeline Flow Presenting a smart sensing system for determining critical velocity and detecting moving bed and/or stationary bed. Dr Jie Wu, Dr Lachlan Graham, Dr Shenggen Hu, CSIRO Minerals and Energy Flagships

Masterclass: Monday 12th November

Slurry Pumping
Paul Slatter, ATC Williams
Masterclass runs from 9.00 until 5.00 with registration from 8.30. Lunch, morning and afternoon tea shall be served during the day.

About this course

There is continuous pressure on industries that pump settling and non-settling slurries, sludges, paste and thickened tailings improve efficiency, increase concentration and reduce water and power consumption. This leads to an increase in the non-Newtonian nature of the material, which in turn places greater demands on the technical skills of the engineering staff involved. This workshop is offered so that you will gain an awareness of the necessary background knowledge and skills required to optimise plant performance when dealing with these materials. The Rheology and Slurry Engineering Group at ATC Williams is committed to establishing and maintaining excellence in this area. ATC Williams has been actively sponsoring research in this area since 1993. This work is recognised internationally and several world firsts have been achieved. Considerable expertise has been built up within ATC Williams, and it is their mission to ensure that their clients receive the full benefit of this expertise in their industrial applications.

Afternoon site visit: Australian Minerals Resource Centre (CSIRO)

2.00

Depart for the Australian Minerals Resource Centre

Delegates will visit the Australian Minerals Resource Centre (AMRC), which is a major minerals processing research site at Waterford. The CSIROs team primarily conducts research in hydrometallurgy, separating minerals from ores by processes involving liquids. In addition to accommodating CSIRO researchers, AMRC also hosts other public and private sector research groups. CSIRO host: Dr John Farrow site manager Afternoon tea will be served at the Centre. Participants to wear long sleeved shirts, long pants or reasonably long skirts, and closed shoes.
