Thank you for taking the time to complete this questionnaire! We ask candidates to return their responses to info@commonsensecalgary.

com by Oct 16, 2013. Candidate Name: What ward or position you are running in/for: Mayor of Calgary

Mobility:
1. Given that 77% of trips (Statistics Canada, Commuting

to Work 2013) are currently made by car in Calgary, do you believe it is City Halls job to [Please circle]:
a. Set targets to change peoples commuter behavior

around the city and encourage more transit, walking and biking? Or
b. To support the choice of Calgarians to use their

automobiles while also improving accessibility to other methods of transportation. I would support this option if you make transit much better, easier, safer to ride, then people will take it. I always prefer a pull strategy to a push strategy.
2. The recent Tom Tom Index found that in Calgary,

congestion adds 27 minutes of additional travel time in a 30 minute commute. What are you going to do to help decrease this lost personal time for Calgarians? I promote roundabouts such as they have now all over England, since they have discovered that using roundabouts instead of stop-and-go traffic lights speeds up traffic

significantly, clears up all sorts of congestion, traffic flows much better and they are safer because any collisions are side to side, not head on or T-boning. Building a S.E. LRT, the 37 st Ring Road, North Central LRT these would be priorities for me and I have ideas of how to get working on it right away, and find the money. In the meantime, Car University ( educational CD listening programs ) works for me I recommend them!

Affordability:
1. According to the Fraser Institute, property taxes have

increased by 31% over the past 3 years.

Do you agree with this figure? Yes/No Yes I agree its actually just under 30% depending on how you calculate it its far too high no matter how my opponent tries to explain it away.

2. If No, what do you believe this increase to be?

3. Over the next four years, what is your personal objective

in terms of tax increases? Specify a percentage amount. Zero increases. And Zero, means Zero. That would be my personal dream. Do more with less. Ive done that all my life, Im good at it, and I know how to do it in Government and large organizations.

4. What regulations and red tape will you eliminate to reduce

the regulatory burden on Calgarys residents and businesses? I would advocate removing the regulations that are contained in the Business License Bylaw that allow draconian behavior by a City Inspector. Some of the clauses in there, shouldnt be legal and may not be under Canadian law..but they put them in anyway. Doesnt show integrity, in my mind. The issues at City Hall are not front line workers, but rather they are upper management ideas and lack of work ethic, in my opinion.

5. The 2013 $52 million surplus was directed for flood

reconstruction efforts. Many Calgarians have different views on how to use this. What do you believe is the best use for the 2014 $52 million surplus? a)Put money into Public Transit b)Give money back to taxpayers |it wasnt our Money. The Province made that clear. Imagine how little trust they must have now after that tax grab. Good luck with cooperation next time we have a big $$ ask when you took the tax credit they gave, and just pocketed the money. Bad decision. Lacks integrity. Undermines citizen confidence in City Council. c) Use money for flood reconstruction efforts d)Pay down debt e)Other (please write your response):

Safety:
1. Do you believe that the $470,000 spent on the blue ring

artwork called travelling light could have been better spent on improving light and security on public transit? Public art is nice. What we paid for it, is far less nice. It is causing a backlash, which risks setting the Corporation against the citizens. Years ago, while developing the Marda Loop, we had an artist do a large outdoor wall mural- cost us $800.00 total so, for the same price, using local talent instead, we could have had 300-400 similar wall murals scattered across the City. We dont need that many

2. What specific measures would you introduce to improve

personal safety on public transit after dark? More video cameras would be a cheap and easy start, asking police to do more community-based and LRT based walking patrols and policing might be worthwhile.

3. What measures would you implement to make

Calgarians safer? Crime, drugs, prostitution, do not thrive in a vibrant resilient community. Thus, you have to build those types of communities. Where neighbors know each other, and what is happening on the streets, and keep an eye out for each other, and care for their community. I have done a lot of work on this over the years, I know what I am doing. I stand for Experience, Integrity, Innovation, and Results. Vote Lord on Monday!
