Big Night Ahead for the Long Runners

The Valley County Long Run Fire Departments Annual Endowment is this Saturday, October 19th beginning at 5:00 p.m. This is Long Runs major fundraiser of the year. Long Run operates on a budget from the county that varies from year to year and what the Endowment brings in. Weve got a long-term goal to build a new fire hall, says Sparky Hanson, were hoping to one day make it a reality. One thing that has helped out this year is the fact that they responded to far fewer fires than they have in past years. Last year Long Run made in excess of 100 rural fire calls; this year it has been around 40 to date. Basically, the fate of their budget depends largely on what Mother Nature throws at them and how well people practice fire safety. The public is encouraged to come to the Ridgerunners Saddle Club this Saturday night in support of our Valley County Volunteer Long Run Fire Department. A Roast Beef Dinner will start at 5:00 along with a silent auction. There will also be a live auction followed by a dance with music by Trial By Fire. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for adults, and ages 5-12 $8. Ages five and under dine for free.

Valley County Long Run Volunteer Firefighters Michael Pedersen and Chris Knodel, along with Long Run Fire Chief Sparky Hanson, recently completed the course to be state certified sawyers. This means they can now cut down trees if necessary on state and federal lands legally. Before we had to wait for CMR or BLM to show up, Sparky noted. Sometimes it was too late to wait.

Missouri River water the topic of scoping meetings

Meeting in Glasgow on October 23rd
The Lower Missouri River Basin Advisory Council held the first in a basin-wide series of scoping meetings in Lewistown on Tuesday, October 8. Nearly three dozen participants attended the meeting to learn about the Montana Water Supply Initiative planning process, surface water supplies, groundwater, and water rights as well as to identify major issues of concern relating to water use in the future. Don Pfau, member of the Fort Peck Lake Advisory Committee, questioned whether any more of the annual average of 7.2 million acre/feet of water sent downriver out of state via the Missouri could be retained to help maintain water levels behind the Fort Peck Dam during the summer. In ordinary measurement language, the average years outflow from Montana, which is considered a headwaters state, is a whopping 2.36 trillion gallons, and in 2011 was 5.5 trillion gallons. The group agreed that more research is needed to find out how much of that water must be sent along to meet downstream water right claims. Other thorny issues that surfaced included what can be done to protect water quality as the energy boom uses more water for development of oil and gas wells in eastern Montana; would more water storage projects be a cost-effective way to make sure that water is available during drought years; how can water use be accurately measured; and will political concerns have an effect on implementation of any recommendations made as a result of this planning process. Five more scoping meetings will be held over the next month in the Lower Missouri River basin. The Glasgow meeting will be on Wednesday, October 23 at the Cottonwood Inn; Culbertson on October 24 at the public library; Roundup on October 30 at St. Benedicts church; Harlowton on October 31 at the Youth Center; and Havre on November 7 at the Great Northern Inn. All meetings will begin at 10:00 a.m. and last until approximately 1:30 p.m., with lunch served. Anyone who wishes to participate in the process, but is unable to attend these meetings, may submit comments by email, telephone, or postal service to Bill Milton, Meeting Facilitator; Wendy Beye, Administrative Assistant; or Michael Downey, DNRC Water Resources Planner. Contact information is below. All information and testimony presented at the meetings will also be available online at the Lower Missouri River Water Supply Initiative website,http://www.dnrc.mt.gov/wrd/water_mgmt/state_ water_plan/lower_missouri/

CLOSE TO SCHOOLS!

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), in command of his last light before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone -- tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth... and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go out into the terrifying expanse of space.

UP TO $5,500 REBATES OR $2,250 PLUS 0% FOR 60 MONTH OAC the story in which he mentioned a small group trying to take over or break up the Village Board in a public meeting as well as a phone interview. I didnt say it, I just reported it. Mitchell told me many times that he is dropping the protective covenant lawsuit. Does one think that they should allow those that dont pay their Village fees to rule and lead? A judges ruling supported the Village Resolution that if one doesnt pay, one doesnt vote. In the course of properties bought for taxes, $336,613 in Village fees were zeroed out and never paid (by State Law as Terry-Lee said). I commend Mike Mitchell and DTM for paying the taxes, but the focus of the issue was the attempted takeover of the Village Board in the Courier article. The properties crumbling, streets with pot holes and buildings with leaky roofs....ask the owners of record about their properties. The 29%ers have nothing to do with the property of others! The 29ers pay over $300,000 per year in condo fees; compare their units to the unkept inventory. The people interested in coming to St. Marie are the onezy-twosy types that buy low and put money into fixing the condos to live in or rent out. Maybe the big investors think that the unkept units dont pencil out and would not allow them to turn a profit. Is that the fault of the retired single unit owners? And only a little over $30,000 in Village fees are paid by the 29ers, just enough to cover the costs of street lights, snow removal, minor street repairs and mosquito abatement. The current Village Board serves without pay, and do so prudently, ethically and legally. And only 29% of total billed Village fees are received to provide the bare necessities. Subsequently one can only do what one has the money to do with. And thats the other side of the story, Folks! The truth Always Prevails. ~ Nick O. Chiechi TM3(SS) U.S. Navy St. Marie

I also utilized published budgets, newsletters, meeting minutes, court documents, contracts, and judges rulings available to me. Some Serious Spuds Glen Monson popped in with some eyepoppin potatoes he harvested from his garden check out that goofy guy in his left hand. He actually wasnt sure how his crop was going to turn out as this spring he simply planted some spuds that had been forgotten in his garage and had sprouted. Looks like they did the trick considering one baked potato could easily feed a couple of people and youd probably have leftovers. I ended up with at least a couple hundred pounds of potatoes, Mr. Monson said.

Grant applications are being accepted for non-profit 501(c) 3 organizations and governmental entities, such as schools and municipalities for projects that promote better living in Valley County, from the Theo and Alyce Beck Foundation Trust. Applications may be picked up from Ruth Ann Hutcheson, 12 1 st Avenue North, or Edward Jones, 207 5th Street South. Applications must be mailed and postmarked no later than Saturday, November 30, 2013. The The o and Alyce B eck Foundation Trust was established with the mission of bettering life in Valley County. It creates income for higher education and helps fund projects that promote better living in Valley County through non-profit organizations. Theo and Alyce Beck were Northeast Montana people who cared about the communities they lived in, whether it was Baylor, where their lives began, Opheim, where they farmed, or Glasgow, where Alyce spent her retired years after Theo passed away. Alyce was active in 4-H and Homemakers Club and she regularly entered flowers, sewing projects and baked goods in the Northeast Montana Fair. She won rosettes with those entries nearly every year. Shortly before she passed away, Alyce generously decided to set up the Theo and Alyce Beck Foundation Trust. This will be the fifth year that the trust will award grants.

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student aide, Sam found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didnt need Sams help to leave the hospital. After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let Sam wheel him to the elevator. On the way down Sam asked him if his wife was meeting him. I dont know, he said, she is still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown. An elementary school teacher decides to pole the class on the difficulty of last nights homework assignment: How many of you were able to complete the assignment without your parents help? About 25% of the class raises their hands. And how many of you were able to complete the assignment with the help of a parent? About 70% of the class raises their hands. The teacher still notices about 5% of the class did not raise their hands. She then calls out, How many of you had to help a parent complete your assignment? Hey, cabby! How much to take me to the station? Five bucks, sir, says the taxi driver. And how much for my suitcase? No charge for the suitcase, sir, replies the taxi driver. Sounds great! Take the case and Ill walk. A man decides to take the opportunity while his wife is away to paint the wooden toilet seat. The wife comes home sooner than expected, sits, and gets the seat stuck to her rear. She is understandably distraught about this and asks her husband to drive her to the doctor. She puts on a large overcoat so as to cover the stuck seat, and they go. When they get to the doctors, the man lifts his wifes coat to show their predicament. The man asks, Doctor, have you ever seen anything like this before? Well, of course I have, the doctor replies, but never framed.
