A study on impact of womens co-operative societies on its members: a case study of womens multipurpose co-operative society Ujire, D.K.

Abstract
The co-operative societies have been playing a phenomenal role in uniting people and marching them towards the realm of development. The cooperative movement of India is the largest in the world. Co-operative societies are service enterprises aiming at rendering service to its member. In one sentence the philosophy of co-operation can be summed up as each for all and all for each. Co-operative are defined by International Cooperative alliance statement on the cooperative identity as autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and culture needs and aspiration through jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprises. The role of women in co-operative is not apparent that of men. But there is a robust need to include them in the ambience of co-operatives. Today there are many women co-operatives being formed to deal particularly with womens need. The multipurpose co-operatives society Ujire is one of the co-operative societies which was established to cater the needs of ten grammas of Belthangady Taluk. The society started its operation in 1983-84. It is registered under co-operative societys act 1959. The society not only deals with accepting and depositing the money from the members but focus much on self-employment development, creating awareness programme on dowry, family planning etc. The society also thrusts in encouraging women to save money regularly and form SHGs and include them as members. The present study is focused on assessing the impact of co-operative society on its members. The study is based on following research questions; What is impact of multipurpose co-operative society on its members? What is the satisfaction level of women by involving in co-operative society? Do the co-operative movement is really beneficial for women? What are the different activities of Womens multipurpose so-operative society? Research Methodology The proposed is study is an empirical work requiring both analytical and descriptive methodology. The primary data will be collected through structured questionnaire and interviews. The secondary data will be collected to form the theoretical base for the study from

the published sources. The samples of 150 women who are the members of the Ujire multipurpose co-operative society, will be selected randomly from the members list. The data collected through questionnaire will be further analyzed through using statistical techniques. The results of the study will be helpful in determining the role of women in co-operative societies, their satisfaction level, their involvement and measures to improve the functions of cooperative society so as to form an effective society benefited to large weaker sections of the society.
