RIVIERA 2014 EVENT APPLICATION FORM

Name of the Event:WATER

ROCKET CHALLENGE

Chapter / Club / Individual: ASME-VIT Event Description: PROBLEM STATEMEMENT:-

Build a water propelled rocket which defies the laws of gravity and remain airborne for maximum duration to test the endurance of the rocket. Next, aim for the bulls eye and use your knowledge of projectile motion in launching the water rocket to land in a particular area. This will test the range of the rocket.

EVENT STRUCTURE

ROUND 1 The water rocket can be launched from the launch pad at any angle as per your convenience and would be tested for maximum time of flight. ROUND 2 A specific range of the rocket will be tested in this round. The rocket has to hit a particular range marked on the ground in the form of concentric circles. The centre of the circles lies at a distance of ___ m. (will be given after testing of the prototype) from the launch point.

ARENA
The arena for the second round consists of three concentric circles. The centre of circle lies at a distance of ___ m. from the launch point. The circular arena is divided into 10 regions. Region 1 Circle of radius 20 cm. Region 2 Ring of inner diameter 20 cm. and outer diameter 1 m. with same centre as circle 1. Region 3 Ring of inner diameter 1 m. and outer diameter 2 m. with same centre as circle 1. Region 4 Ring of inner diameter 2 m. and outer diameter 3 m. with same centre as circle 1. Region 5 Ring of inner diameter 3 m. and outer diameter 4 m. with same centre as circle 1. Region 6 Ring of inner diameter 4 m. and outer diameter 5 m. with same centre as circle 1. Region 7 Ring of inner diameter 5 m. and outer diameter 6 m. with same centre as circle 1. Region 8 Ring of inner diameter 6 m. and outer diameter 7 m. with same centre as circle 1. Region 9 Ring of inner diameter 7 m. and outer diameter 8 m. with same centre as circle 1. Region 10 Ring of inner diameter 8 m. and outer diameter 9 m. with same centre as circle 1. Region 11 Ring of inner diameter 9 m. and outer diameter 10 m. with same centre as circle 1.

JUDGING CRITERIA Round 1 Point distribution for Round 1

A stopwatch will be used to measure the time of flight. The duration shall include the time when the rocket is launched and until it touches the ground in the first instance. The time for the motion touching the ground once is not included.

Bonus 5 seconds will be added in the final time for water rocket with boosters or multistaging. Multi-staging along with boosters will earn 10 extra seconds.

However, it must be clearly understood that these bonus time will be awarded only on successful functioning of the mechanisms. This will be judged by the organising authority here.

Successful Functioning for boosters is their (all of them) detachment from the main stage and further propulsion of the main stage after that. Successful Functioning for multi-stage is the separation of the various stages at different intervals.

First round is the qualification round. Top 10 teams will make their way to the second round.

Round 2 Point distribution for Round 2

The circular arena is divided into 10 concentric circular regions with diameter of 1m to 10m. The inner Region 1 (diameter 20 cm) holds 100 points. The next Region 2 (diameter 20cm- 1m) holds 90 points. The next Region 3 (diameter 1m- 2m) holds 80 points. The last Region 4 (diameter 2-3 m) holds 70 points. The last Region 5 (diameter 3-4 m) holds 60 points. The last Region 6 (diameter 4-5 m) holds 50 points. The last Region 7 (diameter 5-6 m) holds 45 points. The last Region 8 (diameter 6-7 m) holds 40 points. The last Region 9 (diameter 7-8 m) holds 35 points. The last Region 10 (diameter 8-9 m) holds 30 points. The last Region 11 (diameter 9-10 m) holds 25 points.

NO points will be awarded if the water rocket lands outside the arena. The position of the rocket will be the first point of impact of the rocket on the ground. In event of any clash of final points a tiebreaker will be held between the concerned teams. The clashing teams will be given one chance to take-off and the team with maximum range will be given superior rank. A maximum of two chances will be given for take-offs and the total score of the two chances will be used for final rank. All decisions taken by the judges will be deemed as final.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

The team will be disqualified in case the bottle bursts while pressurizing and still mounted on the launcher.

Participants are allowed to use separate models for round one and two but the same model has to be used throughout a given round.

The launch will be provided. However participants are allowed to bring their own launchers if they are willing to.

The organizers reserve all rights to change any or all of the above rules. Changes will be highlighted on the website and will also be mailed to all the registered participants.

TEAM STRUCTURE
A team can consist of maximum 3 members. Price 150/- per team

MODEL SPECIFICATIONS

Only water and air can be used as propellants. A foot pump compressor will be provided on the spot for pressurizing the water rocket. Water Rocket and any of its components should be handmade. Readymade models are strictly not allowed. Your model can be of any size or shape and can be made of any material. But, it should not damage the arena or hurt any person. If your model is found dangerous, you will not be allowed The water rocket may contain any of the following mechanisms suitable for different rounds -

Water Rocket with Parachute mechanism. Water rocket with booster mechanism. In this case, participants should ensure that they have proper launchers supporting the launching mechanism. Multi-stage rocket for extended time of flight. Water rocket with radio control mechanism. Any other innovative mechanism will be encouraged provided that the material and mechanism used is not harmful or dangerous to any person in the field. In this case the decision of the panel and no queries will be entertained in this regard. However, it is upon the team to choose what model to use for different rounds according to the mentioned rules. .
