F or the second time this year, the members of KSPC’s MMT gathered once
again. But the affair last June 24-25, 2009 was not only for the MMT’s 2nd
quarterly meeting. It was also for the training of the MMT members and the

KSPC Joins Celebration of
Environment Month
I n June, the whole world celebrated the Environment Month with the theme:
“YOUR PLANET NEEDS YOU! UNITE TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE”.
Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 237 signed in 1998, KSPC joined
this celebration with Colon Elementary School in Barangay Colon, Naga, Cebu
last June 29, 2009. The affair was highlighted with a “potting activity” for the
seedling nursery at the school grounds.
The activity is important for the effective germination of trees. This is indeed
an important initiative since tree planting is a key solution to climate change.
The banner which expresses the Company’s strong support to environmental
protection was also incorporated in the activity as suggested by the DENR
Regional Office. In line with this endeavor, KSPC will continue to preserve the
environment while serving the power needs of the community.

KSPC Donates Equipment for the Improvement
of the Barangay Health Center Facility
K EPCO SPC Power Corporation once again showed its dedication to its
social responsibility to its host community when it donated needed equipment
for the upgrading of Colon’s Barangay Health Center facility.
KSPC, led by Vice President Byung-Ill Choi, turned over to Barangay Colon
officials last July 13, 2009 a refrigerator and a goose neck lamp, which are
identified as the most immediate needs of the health center to improve its
services to its constituents. Barangay Colon’s midwife, who attends to the day-
to-day operation of the health center, along with the barangay health workers,
witnessed the turnover of the donation at the KSPC Office.
The refrigerator will be used for the storage of vaccines and other medical
supplies while the lamp will be helpful during check-ups, especially of
pregnant women. With these facilities, the barangay health center can now
provide better services which will improve the quality of health care of Colon
residents.

Arrival of Steam Turbine Generator
and Accessories
K EPCO SPC Power Corporation’s shipment for its steam turbine generator
and its accessories arrived at the Cebu International Port last June 22, 2009
on board m/v Wakasa V. 088.
The shipment’s point of origin was Hamburg, Germany and it arrived at the
KSPC Construction Site in Colon, Naga, Cebu last June 26, 2009.
The arrival of this particular shipment is an important event for KSPC because
the steam turbine is considered as the heart of the power plant.

Steam Turbine Generator and the Circulating
Water Pump (CWP) Structure
L ike a human’s heart, the steam turbine is very important to the plant. It
receives the processed energy from the boiler and uses this to generate electric
power.
On the other hand, the circulating water pump structure functions as the
artery of the power plant as this provides water for the steam turbine generator.
This is necessary for the condenser before starting up.
6
Steam Turbine and CWP (Con’t.)
The circulating water pump keeps the condenser cool during operation and is
needed to avoid overheating that can cause leaking and damage to the system
that could result to operation shut down.
The completion of the operating floor for the steam turbine and the start of
building the circulating water pump structure is an indication that Kepco SPC
Power Corporation’s Cebu Power Plant Project is already halfway in the
mechanical aspect of the construction and already near completion with its
civil works activity.

Hanger Rods
T he hanger rods are installed to support the headers and pressure parts
that will be suspended in the boiler. These rods are made of high grade carbon
steel to ensure their durability in terms of strength. They are resistant to
mechanical and thermal stresses so they can last and remain reliable within
the design life of the power plant.
The rods have different sizes but in general, they have similar designs. Before
erection works, the rods were laid flat on the ground and were supported from
the ground with wood or steel beam. The threaded portion have been cleaned
to make sure that adjustments in terms of elevation requirements could be
easily done during the setting of the pressure parts that will be attached to it.
The erection of hanger rods for Boiler Unit No. 1 has already been finished.
After the installation of the rods, the boiler tubes, headers and other pressure
parts installation works will start as planned.

Air Preheater
The clean air absorbs the heat from the flue gas through heat transfer. Heat
transfer processes such as conduction and convection causes some of the heat
to be absorbed by the clean air. The air preheater is divided into five modules.
The modules are consisted of tubes that are highly resistant to corrosion.
The erection works of the air preheater was not easy for many reasons. First,
the modules were very heavy. Second, the modules have to be lifted over the
steel structure of approximately 60 meters. Third, the modules have to be
descended slowly inside the steel structure to avoid collision and possible
damage of the structure and the equipment. Fourth, wind factor and the
vibration of equipment also posed some problems during the handling of the
modules. The erection of the air preheater was completed in the third week of
June 2009.
