Newsletter Oct/Nov 2013

I just got back from our October Schooling Show. We had perfect weather and lovely tests ridden! Sadly, we had such a poor entry, we had to cancel our use of the Rockin JP grounds. Cindy was nice enough to open her place so everyone who worked so hard for this show was not disappointed! Thank you, Cindy! And a BIG Thank you to Sharon and Christy Olthof, Aimee Arnold and Sally Hart (who came all the way down down Tucson) for entering our show! Great rides by all!! Now a question to all of you... what can we do to get more entries?? I understand that many members (me included) had other reasons for not entering this time around, but I think we need to come up with some other ideas for getting more entries... please put on your thinking caps and help us come up with something.... Due to some miscommunication, we were not able to use the back room at Ricardos for our September meeting. So rather than try to conduct a business meeting in the main room of the restaurant, we had a great dinner together and were able to catch up with each other!! Our October meeting WILL be the back room on October 24th. This will be a very important meeting as we need to discuss next years show schedule and take nominations for next years Board of Ofcers. Anyone who would like to step up to ll any position on the Board is more than welcome to volunteer! But even more important, Aimee Arnold is going to give a presentation on the Buck Brannaman Seminar she attended in Santa Fe and Yvonne Oehlenson is also going to give a talk on Equine Massage. (She is having a hands on seminar next month that looks to be very worth while

attending!). I would like to see us have more informative presentations at our meetings, but I NEED ideas! Please let me know what you would like to learn about!!! Lastly, a gentle reminder that our 2013 Dues expire November 30! You can get your dues to Pia anytime! (If you renew before the end of the year, you will get the USDF 2013 yearbook!) Charlotte Borghardt, CD&EA President On Sept 5 Cindy Nornamdeau sponsored a Schleese saddle tting clinic. Kristin Vlietstra from Schlesee showed us how a properly tting saddle should be and the importance of that properly tting saddle is to the comfort of the horse. A bad tting saddle can cause your horse to undiagnosed lameness, muscle denition and atrophy, sore backs, and bad behavior among other things. For more information go to www.schlese.com or view saddle tting on Youtube. www.youtube.com/mjpschleese. October 5 was our last dressage show for the year. Altho we had a very small tun out, we still had alot of fun and weather was great. We had real interest in the Western Dressage. Sally ??? of Tucson came to ride the western test. Others just stopped by to watch and are very interested in the club. Also, Sharon Othloff rode a great musical freestyle that was really inspirational. We would like to thank everyone that rode and came to help with the show.

CD&EA would like to Congratulate Erica Zaborac for winning the APHA and Purina A Difference You Can See with her horse Bo. Erica had to produce a video of her and Bo and explain how Bo was orphaned and had broke his shoulder and hip. After his healing, Bo still didnt act right, so Erica had an equine chiropractor come to look at Bo. The chiropractor found that Bo has ulcers. Erica put Bo on Purina Wellsolve. Bo is now feeling great and him and Erica have become great partners. You can view Erica and Bo on www.youtube. com/EricaZaborac or www.APHA.com/difference. CD&EA would also like to congratulate Nicole Musmanno and her High Desert Stables Welsh Cob stallion Georges daughter, JHN Imogen. They placed in the middle of a very competitive Training Division at Texas Rose in Tyler, Texas.

Nicole and Ginny CD&EA Participants Riders, hold on to any and all score sheets for pending end of year awards. All shows count. Dr. Dusti Prentice, DMV, had her hands full this summer with numerous cases of Pigeon Fever. also know as dry land distemper and Colorado strangles. This disease in unpredictable, highly contagious and curable. You notice a swelling

over the chest muscle or along the underside of the belly and your horse is waling stify and can be lethargic. Pigeon fever is a bacterial infection and can survive for up to two months in had or bedding and more than eight months in soil. Transmission The bacterial can be transmitted horse to horse via insects or by contact with contaminated soil. Controlling an out break Insect control is important to make sure other horsed don not become infected Good sanitation, disposing contaminated bedding or material from draining abscesses. Any equipment used on the horse should be disinfected. Wash hands and change clothing before handling healthy horses. Treatment Deep abscess should be surgically drained by your vet, since it may take ultrasound to determine the location. Once opened, the discharge ows freely from the abscess. After draining the abscess, it should be ushed with Betadine twice a day, and the horse should be put on antibiotics. Infected horse needs to be quarantined from other horses till the abscess is not long weeping which could be any where from 1-3 weeks. Prevention The best prevention is using y masks at the start of y season. Fly spray is also important to do. Clean manure from horse areas early in the morning before ies come out. Fly sheets can help in the prevention and call your vet when you have any concerns. Grass Ridge CDE We are still in need f volunteers for the Combined Driving Event of 2013. The dates are Oct 25, 26, and 27. This is a great time to see carriage driving at its best. Lunch is served to all volunteers. Contact me at: litepole@aol.com or 520-883-1818 Hope to hear from you. Is your horse having difficulty working forwards through a soft swinging back, or unable to depart with the correct canter lead; going disunited behind, running through the rein or just disgruntled and unhappy, MastersonMethod can help! Find out what your horse can do with a balanced and flexible body. The MastersonMethod integrates a unique method of bodywork that recognizes and then follows the visual responses of the horse to touch, to find and release accumulated muscle and structural stress in key junctions of the horse's body that most affect performance. It is an equally effective technique for any equine discipline. Due to its intuitive, gentle and interactive nature, it is a wonderful way to increase trust, bonding and understanding between human and horse. Using gentle touch techniques, this method creates an interaction between you and your horse in which you can learn to read your horse so he tells you where the problem is. MastersonMethod is the only method where you can learn to do this. This introductory Course will help you bond further with your horse, improving his wellbeing and performance with you. The course is held in a relaxed atmosphere, you dont need any specific qualifications, just a genuine desire to help your horse and develop a better bond both on and off the ground.

*If you dont want to haul your horse, there are horses on site that can be used to learn the techniques.

Class size is limited so register early to ensure your spot.
