MODEL CLAUSES FOR CIVIL ENGINEERING WORKS

SECTION 75 Integrity testing of piles 75/1 TESTING OF PILES Non-destructive integrity testing shall be carried out using the Transient Dynamic Response (TDR) method on % of working piles. (75.002) (a) It is suggested that all working bored cast- in-place and CFA piles are tested for integrity. (b) TDR testing shall be undertaken after the pile has been trimmed to expose concrete in preparation for incorporation into Works. Testing of each pile shall take place within 28 days of casting of that pile and all testing shall be complete within 14 days of casting of the last pile. The piles shall not be tested within 7 days after casting the pile. Further to ICE Specification clause B13.8, the test results and findings shall be reported to the Engineer within 5 days of the completion of each phase of testing. All personnel conducting the tests shall be suitably qualified and shall be employed by the specialist firm. At least 28 days prior to commencing any integrity testing the Contractor shall submit to the Engineer the following information for approval: (i) Details of the testing equipment and personnel carrying out the tests, (ii) A Work Package Plan for the test, (iii) Examples of test results showing no apparent pile defects and one apparent pile defect. (g) The Engineer shall be informed of any visit to be made by the specialist firm one working day in advance and informed of the piles to be tested during the visit. Any apparent faults or defects in a pile shall be reported immediately to the Engineer. The Contractors programme shall allow a sufficient float for the replacement or repair of defective piles.

(i)

Preliminary test results shall be submitted to the Engineer within 24 hours and test reports with findings submitted within 5 days of the completion of each phase of testing. .. No. copies of the formal test reports shall be submitted directly to the Engineer by the specialist firm. The stages of the piling work, when a phase of nondestructive testing of piles is to be carried out, the method to be adopted and the number of piles to be tested shall be detailed above or can be determined by the Contractor, and agreed by the Engineer. The Sonic Logging method of pile integrity testing may be utilised for selected large diameter bored cast-in-place concrete piles which have been provided with ducts during installation. The piles to be tested by Sonic Logging shall be identified on the Contract Drawings. These piles shall be fitted with at least four steel ducts equally spaced around the pile circumference to the full depth of the pile. The ducts shall be watertight and fastened within the reinforcement cage. In the event that reinforcement does not extend to the full depth of piles, additional sacrificial reinforcement shall be added to the cage so that the ducts remain secure, resist pressures and avoid buckling during concreting. The duct sections shall be joined by threaded connecting collars and fitted with metal caps at each end. The ducts shall be minimum 50 mm diameter and extend at least 200 mm above the finished level of the concrete. Plastic ducts shall not be used. Testing shall be carried out to the full depth of the pile at depth intervals not greater than 250 mm. Preliminary test results shall be submitted to the Engineer within 24 hours and test reports with findings submitted within 5 days of the completion of each phase of testing. Piles shall not be tested within 7 days of casting the pile. After completion of the Sonic Logging test the ducts shall be grouted up with a grout of comparable strength to the pile concrete. The Contractors programme shall allow a sufficient float for the replacement or repair of defective piles. (75.002)

Static load testing of piles

75/2

Note to specifier

The design of the piles to be tested with full details of the proposed load application system and test procedure to be used for static load testing of piles shall be provided to the Employers Representative for acceptance a minimum ..weeks prior to load testing commencing. (75.003) Inset minimum period (typically a minimum of 4 weeks is specified). The locations of the piles identified to be tested are shown on the Contract Drawings. The tests to be performed are specified in Schedule 70/B of the Appendix to Section 70. (75.004) The locations of the piles identified to be tested are shown on the Contract Drawings. The tests to be performed are specified in Schedule 70/C of the Appendix to Section 70. (75.005) Generally test between 2% and 5% of working piles.

Driven piles shall not be tested until a minimum weeks after completion of the installation of the pile to be tested. (75.006)

A period of 2 weeks to 4 weeks is generally required after completion of the installation of driven piles to allow excess pore water pressures to dissipate. 75/6 The application of load and monitoring for load and pile displacement shall be by electronic means. The loading equipment shall be able to increase or decrease the load smoothly or hold it constant when required to within 0.1 % of the specified load. (75.009) Insert alternative tolerance if required. 75/REF The following are amendments and additions to the References provided in 75C.
