3 Holcim About us

In a span of 90 years since its birth in the tiny Swiss village of Holderbank, Canton Aargau, Holcim has become one of the worlds leading cement and construction materials companies.
Today, our international presence consists of a balanced mix of companies in more than 70 industrialized countries and emerging markets. We employ around 90,000 people worldwide. Since changing the Groups name from Holderbank Financire Glaris Ltd. in May 2001, the name Holcim has become synonymous with leadership in the supply of cement and aggregates (crushed stone, sand and gravel), as well as activities such as ready-mix concrete and asphalt, and construction-related services. The Groups employees are seamlessly connected through a strong communication infrastructure and regular exchanges of best practices at the local and global platforms. Holcim ensures that the quality of products and services are at its optimum in all of its market areas, ensuring that customers get world-class cement each and every time. With market-oriented structures, new products, skilled employees and efficient environmental management systems, Holcim ensures a strong position now and for the years ahead.

Holcim About us

Our local strength

The Groups reputation also holds true in the Philippines, where Holcim Philippines, Inc. is the leading cement manufacturer.

The company was borne out of a merger of three established cement companies Hi Cement Corporation, Davao Union Cement Corporation and Bacnotan Cement Corporation in January 2000. It also acquired majority ownership of a fourth cement company, Alsons Cement Corporation, in October 2002. We have grown into a workforce of over 1,400 and have the most strategically located cement plants and offices in the Philippine archipelago in La Union, Bulacan, Davao, and Lugait in Misamis Oriental. Together these plants produce an annual capacity of more than 7 million metric tons of clinker and 8.7 million tons of cement. We have the wisdom of our years and the strength of our numbers. We carry Filipino passion and Swiss precision to deliver cement perfection. This blend makes us well positioned to continue growing together with the nation.

Our products

From Asias tallest dam to hotels in the City of Pines, Holcim products measure up to the rigorous demands of engineers, contractors, architects, homeowners, masons and other cement users. Nearly a thousand dealers and retailers across the country carry our products whether in bags or in bulk to suit various applications and needs. Beyond our product offerings that follow strict manufacturing quality and environmental standards, we also extend technical support to our customers from start to finish.

Excel Holcim Excel is especially formulated with advanced mineral additives that make it perform faster, easier and stronger than general-purpose cement. With its higher early strength, concreting and construction time is easier and shorter. Excel also translates to higher yield and higher workability, eliminating the need for repairs and rework.

Premium Holcim Premium is a high-performance Portland cement specially formulated for ready-mix concrete applications. It has a high compressive strength, high workability, and is compatible with commonly available concrete admixtures. Supplied in bulk, Holcim Premium is used mainly for concrete for roads and commercial buildings. It is recommended for high-rise buildings, concrete mat foundations, roads and bridges, and pre-cast products.

WallRight Extra Durable Holcim WallRight is a masonry cement ideal for plastering, hollow block laying, and finishing applications. It has increased bond strength of 200% compared to general-purpose cement and gives consistently smoother finish due to added admixture. Holcim Extra Durable is a high-quality, low alkali, sulfate-resistant cement ideal for massive structures such as dams, large piers, heavy retaining walls and drainage. This product is produced only in volume orders.

7 Holcim About us

Holcim Extra Durable sulfate-resistant cement was used in the San Roque Multipurpose Dam, the tallest dam in Asia and one of the Philippines' largest infrastructure projects to date. With a majestic gated spillway standing 200 meters high and an embankment base 850 meters wide, the entire structure is 1,130 meters long and used over 160,000 tons of cement.

Our standards

Manufacturing Excellence At the heart of Holcim Philippines solid track record as a cement leader is its dedication to manufacturing excellence. Holcim Philippines operates four plants in key areas around the Philippines. All our plants have ISO certifications: ISO 9001 for Quality Management System, ISO 14001 for Environmental Management System, ISO 18001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management System. This is a testament to our unwavering commitment to quality and productivity. Safety Holcim Philippines places the highest value on ensuring the health and safety of our employees, subcontractors, third parties, and guests. We strictly enforce global safety standards, targeting zero risk for all plant employees and the communities around our plants, as an integral part of our corporate responsibility. Proof of this commitment are the four major awards that Holcim Philippines received from the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) for its adherence to the highest standards in mining and environmental safety. Environment Holcim Philippines strives to make a mark as the sustainability partner. Through its performance and partnerships, it makes sure it is firmly in the drivers seat of sustainable construction, steering the industry towards a cleaner environment. Our commitment is to continuously improve our environmental performance and provide positive contributions to our business. Eco-efficiency is at the core of our business producing more cement while using fewer resources and producing less waste and pollution. We do this by promoting the co-processing of waste in clinker production. We realize there are sustainable development benefits that could be reaped from using alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR) such as used rubber tires, used oil, and other industrial by-products in our cement manufacturing process. We aim to continuously improve our performance and increase our understanding of the challenges we face in moving towards environmental sustainability. We have a network of environmental coordinators and partners in local government units, non-government organizations, communities and plant employees that helps address key concerns such as nutrition and education, proper waste management, and reforestation.

Awards Won For two years in a row (2006-2007), Holcim Philippines has won top industry awards for its performance in quarry rehabilitation. In 2005, it received the Presidential Mining Industry Award (Platinum level) and went a step higher in 2006, winning the 2006 Titanium Award. These awards recognize outstanding levels of dedication, initiative and innovation in the pursuit of excellence in environmental management, safety, and community development. For the second consecutive year, our Lugait plant also received the Best Mining Forest Award, which seeks to recognize mining companies that excel in rehabilitation and reforestation of areas disturbed by mining activities. Holcim has also been declared a "Leader of the Industry" for three years in a row in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for its exceptional performance in the building materials industry.

Our commitment and responsibility

Holcims vision is to provide foundations for tomorrow's society. This can only hold true if we are able to effectively improve the quality of life of our workforce, their families and the communities around our operations. More than this, we believe our success as a company lies in ensuring that we are able to manage our resources responsibly so that future generations can meet their needs.

Our CSR Policy Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for Holcim is more than a collection of projects and monetary contributions but an important and integral element of our business. It is our commitment to work as partners with all our stakeholders. We do this by closely working with community advisory panels (CAP), a broad cross-section of representative voices that directly generate feedback from the community, experts and leaders. Engaging Our Employees Our corporate responsibility extends beyond the workplace and into our workforce. Not only do we strive to be the employer of choice by attracting and retaining the best people, but we also aim to draw and develop leaders who have the mind and the heart to carry on the task of meeting the needs of the future. Our employees, especially those in our plants, are the front-liners and the face of Holcim in the community. As such, we ensure that every Holcim employee wears the brand proudly, not just on their shirts and sleeves, but with passion in their hearts. Our CSR Programs

'galing Mason Capacity building of builders and clients is key to ensuring the proper application of cement products and quality. In the Philippines, masonry is one of the most important trades in the construction industry yet one of the most neglected. Despite the formal training offered in technical or vocational schools run or accredited by the state-run Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), enrollment remains still low as it takes six months to complete basic training. Majority of the masons in the country acquire their skills over the years through actual exposure in the workplace. Through the 'galing Mason program, Holcim Philippines offers a certified seven-day training course, a regional and national masonry skills competition among certified and skilled masons, and an awards program recognizing outstanding masons. In collaboration with TESDA, the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA) and the Association of Construction & Informal Workers (formerly NUBCW), Holcim Philippines is able to improve the level of knowledge and skills of untrained masons. The program enhances their skills and knowledge, provides them opportunities for better employment, as well as promotes concrete technology and the appropriate use of concrete products.

WIWAG Business Weeks This is a five-day training concept in business management based on a computer-assisted business simulation game. It aims to enhance business and economics education among second- to fourth-year MP undergraduate students of public colleges and universities. The hands-on business training allows participants to gain significant insights in the vital areas of finance, human resources, research and development, production, and marketing. Licensed global volunteer instructors from Holcim Philippines and other partner-companies conduct the WIWAG Business Weeks student training courses. Holcim Philippines acquired the license to run WIWAG Business Weeks in the Philippines through its implementing arm, Education for Youth Enterprise Foundation, Inc. (EYE Foundation).

Our CSR Programs

Stakeholder engagement Holcim Philippines has a long history of constructive engagement with local communities. One of the productive ways it addresses issues that emerge from stakeholders in areas close to its operations is through community advisory panels (CAP). With a broad cross-section of representative voices, CAPs directly generate substantive input from the community, as well as experts in specific technical fields. Since the formation of CAP, Holcims relationship with communities has blossomed. Holcims Lugait, Misamis Oriental plant has opened its doors to local officials, non-government organizations, students and community residents. The shift in community relations for Holcim Philippines has not only made a positive impact on the community, but also on its employees as they now feel and understand that they are part of a bigger community. One example of a project that was planned and implemented via the CAP is the Womens Livelihood Program which trains women in sewing and production of various handicrafts. The program helps augment family income and provide for family needs of women living in communities surrounding Holcim plants. Another unique community project that Holcim supports is the sea urchin grow-out program. The the company has partnered with a local leader who acts as program head, and the University of the Philippines Fishery Research Institute serves as technical consultant. Holcim grants enabled its partners to reintroduce sea urchins in the region through a concerted hatchery (called sea ranching) program. A capacity-building workshop was conducted to enhance technical skills and entrepreneurial ability among the fisherfolk in the coastal municipality of Baloan, La Union. Holcim Philippines is also able to provide livelihood opportunities to the community and promote environmental concern through the plants Butterfly Farm, established in September 2007. The Lugait plant has sponsored workshops on butterfly production and marketing for employees, students and residents of Misamis Oriental. Through the workshops, participants learned how to produce and sell butterfly products and earned extra income for their families. Engagement with different stakeholder groups has led to increased awareness about environmental responsibility and the overall role Holcim and its employees play in the community.
