Q: How does the creative process work with each couple, and how do
you successfully create different looks and experiences for each bride?
A: Every couple comes with a theme they want their wedding to be
based on; I take that theme and expose them to multiple design elements.
In order to further develop that idea, I create a mood board for them that
is very visual and paints a clear picture of colors and textures. After this is
complete, we take that mood board and apply it to each part: invitations,
table tops, room design, etc. Coming from an Israeli background, my vast
travel experiences, and with ofces in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and
London, I am constantly exposed to an array of design & dcor elements.
I put these experiences to work with the weddings I plan; each couple
takes away something unique from it. Shai
Q: How does having ofces and teams in New York, Miami, Los Angeles,
and London help your brides when planning a destination wedding?
A: If a couple lives in Los Angeles, but is planning a wedding in Miami,
they can meet with our LA team who will then coordinate with our Miami
team. The process is streamlined, where both teams are invested and
working toward mutual success. Our clients enjoy that stamp of quality; it
makes them feel comfortable, which is most important for us. Yaniv
Q: What are your favorite wedding venues in Miami?
A: I love the JW Marriott downtown, they have a great pool deck for
ceremonies with great views and the events team service is remarkable. I
also love Vizcaya for the unique, beautiful space it is, European Gardens
on Biscayne Bay and also the Mandarin Oriental. Shai
Q: What are your favorite owers to work with?
A: I love the colors and soft textures of peonies and how they blend with
other owers. White peonies with touches of chartreuse create such a
modern, clean look. Orchids are beautiful and modern yet tropical and
durable. If youre going for a beach-themed wedding, white phalaenopsis
on drift wood is a great touch! Shai
Q: What fun food elements have you served recently? Is there a new
food trend our readers should be aware of?
A: Weve been serving a lot of ethnic dishes recently. Oftentimes our
clients will ask us to include references to their origins in the menus we
tailor for them and as a result weve created many cultural recipes. Yaniv
Our clients enjoy that stamp
of quality; it makes them feel
comfortable which is most
important for us.

Upon joining Modern Luxury almost two
years ago, I never imagined I would have the
amazing opportunity to become publisher of
the frst-ever luxury bridal magazine in South
Florida and the Caribbean. It has been an
amazing journey and I am excited to fnally
share our premiere issue with you.
As we embarked on this opportunity, and
started researching the bridal industry here,
we realized several important things. First,
we learned that brides remain committed
to planning a luxurious, memorable event.
Second, we discovered that South Florida is
ranked among the top 10 places as the most
expensive locales for a wedding in the United
States. And, last, we learned that one in 10
weddings are destination ceremonies. Armed
with this information, we knew there was a
need to bring our luxury bridal magazine to
the market, and our timing couldnt be better.
Recently I was at the Ever After bridal
boutique in Coconut Grove, Fla., watching
a mothers reaction as her daughter tried on a
wedding gown for the frst time. It was such an
emotional and personal experience. It brought
me back to when I frst spotted the gown I
wanted to wear. It was in the pages of a bridal
magazine (yes, I found it even before I was
ofcially engaged) and I remember knowing
it was the one for me. When I fnally tried it
on at a boutique in Coral Gables and walked
out to my mother, sister and best friends, I
knew by their smiles and tears that it was the
one. Now that Ive been happily married for
eight years and Im nine months pregnant
with my second child, a girl, I can only dream
of the day my husband and I will be able to
experience these special moments with our son
and daughter.
Unforgettable moments and experiences
are what our featured industry professionals
create with such ease and professionalism.
Learning about the bridal industry in the
past several months has forever changed the
way I look at the planning of a wedding and all
of the celebrations that go along with it. I have
a greater appreciation for the professionals in
the industry and all they do to make a couples
special day a truly memorable one (sometimes
without the bride and groom even realizing
it!). I can honestly say we are lucky to have
the very best here in South Florida and the
Caribbean. You can trust your day will be all
you ever dreamed of.
As you begin the search for that one-of-a-
kind engagement ring, couture bridal gown or
stunning luxury venue for that special day, we
know you will be in good hands with the best
the industry has to ofer. And I trust this issue
will lead you to the top resources available due,
in large part, to the eforts of our editorial,
sales and marketing folks (I appreciate you so
much, team!).
Congratulations to you brides, grooms and
families celebrating your own momentous
occasion. Thank you for giving us the
opportunity to be a part of this very special time
in your lives. mbeazel@modernluxury.com

Welcome to the premiere issue of Modern Luxury
Brides South Florida & Te Caribbean, or the
magazine Ive afectionately nicknamed Te
Brides Guide to Glam. I cant begin to express
how much of an amazing whirlwind it has been
since we announced the launch earlier this
yearit was almost like planning a wedding!
After getting over the initial excitement, we
got right to business, seeking out the areas top
planners, luxe venues and reputable vendors
who provide the most inspired, trendsetting,
chic products and services for that big day.
We also, of course, got to shop for
lavish jewelry and jaw-dropping gowns
so we could outft our gorgeous models in
couture made by the planets top bridal gown
designers. Our shootwhich took place
at the elegant, new St. Regis Bal Harbour
Resortwas, in a word, perfection.
Our goal for Modern Luxury Brides South
Florida & Te Caribbean is straightforward
and unyielding: We will become the ultimate
resource for any bride-to-be with means hosting
an exquisite wedding in our region.
Unlike most of the bridal magazines
around, you wont see the phrases do it
yourself, cut corners or save money by... in
our pages. Its not that we dont consider fscal
responsibility; its just that we believe your
special day should be the one time you spoil
yourself and your loved ones with a celebration
as rich and opulent as the love you share with
your soul mate.
What you will fnd within our pages,
instead, are tributes to couples who made
their weddings newsworthy events, and all
the creative minds who helped make their
celebrations truly unforgettable. Te details
are as inspiring as the people who made these
fabulous days happen, including one couple
who planned their exciting destination
wedding while the bride-to-be underwent
chemotherapy; hotel butlers who were charged
with sourcing seven white puppies festooned
with blue ribbon collars hours before a
ceremony; and a pair of lovebirds who had
not one, but two ceremonies back-to-back so
they could honor their difering religious and
cultural backgrounds in comparable style. Te
power of love is quite mighty, it seems.
Whether you just got engaged yesterday or
you are ready to walk down the aisle any day
now, know that we are honored you made us
a part of your milestone occasion. I hope you
enjoy this issue as much as my team and I did
orchestrating it. raltman@ modernluxury. com
P.S. After your wedding, please dont
forget to send photos of your nuptials to
bridessouthflorida@gmail.com so it can
be considered for our Hitched section. (Our
afection also extends well beyond the I dos!)
Our goal is straightforward and unyielding: We will become the
ultimate resource for any bride-to-be with means hosting an
exquisite wedding in our region.

Margit Bisztray has written in and
about South Florida for 15 years,
covering everything from food and
restaurants to design and architecture.
She has somehow managed to be
a bridesmaid only once in her life
(how is that possible?) and the dress
was disappointingly tasteful. She
says covering Take Two, a double
wedding, made her hungry: I love
Indian food, and the thought of a
chaat buffet sounds perfect. She
assures us she also would have rocked
the Bollywood-inspired dance some of
the guests performed.
As a contributor to Womens Wear Daily,
Rebecca Kleinman regularly covers
the bridal market from top boutiques

involved with our premiere issue since
wedding bells are ringing for one of her
closest girlfriends this fall. I introduced
the couple five years ago, says
Kleinman, who also has set up several
relatives. You could say Im giving
Patti Stanger a run for her money.

WE D DOS S I E R now!

Bare feet and a designer gown in disarray. A runaway bride captured?
Wedding day gone awry? Anything but.
Venezuelan lovebirds Valentina Stransky and Jonathan Woginiak
wed last November in Miami and called on photographers Antonio
Trigo and Victor Mart of El Marco Rojo to document their big day.
But the Madrid-based shutterbugs had more in mind for the couple
than poses and plastic smiles. Something a lot dierent, in fact.
It didnt take too much convincing to get Stransky to trash her
dress hours after the ceremony, running around the city barefoot and
carefreeall in the name of getting emotionally-charged shots.
Since the bride and groom are big movie fans, they chose Ice
Palace Film Studios for this snuggly scene. Amazingly, and after the
exhaustion that is a wedding, the couple had more energy than ever,
Trigo recalls. Val and Jonathan were radiant, gorgeous, happy and
seemed to possess peace of mind after fullling a dream.
Yes, it was a scene suitable for celluloidand theyve got the dry
cleaning bill to show for it. Riki Altman

Sighs of relief
and tears of joy
are common at
the new studio of
Manolo Doreste
and Eddie Rodriguez,
a one-stop shop where future
newlyweds can take care of their
photography and ceremony needs
in one visit (well, almost). Here,
the caeinated Doreste answers
any and all photography questions
while the more subdued, and
rather Zen, Rodriguez takes
clients through the ins and outs
of his duties as an interfaith
minister. Our goal is to assist in
any way we can, says Rodriguez,
who performs as many as four
weddings a weekend and whose
services are in the $600 to $900
range. Being on Miracle Mile
in Coral Gables, Fla., is a long
overdue validation for the two,
who together have more than
20 years of experience. Were
in the heart of
everything
bridal, says
Doreste,
the only
photographer
with a studio on
the Mile.
His average client package for
wedding coverage and subsequent
albums runs about $9,500. And
we know all our neighbors, so
if a client needs, say, a orist, or
a caterer, we can guide them.
Rodriguez specializes in uniting
couples from divergent cultural
and religious backgrounds as well
as in commitment ceremonies for
gay and lesbian couples, and the
duo has become the uno cial
de facto minister/photographer
combo for professional athletes
and locals of prominence, a
testament to their professionalism
and fuss-free nature. We know
that its not about us, adds
Doreste. Its about the two people
taking that walk down the aisle.

Before walking down the aisle, march over to MIAMI
Institute of Age Management and Intervention
for Bridal Beauty Boot Camp, a series of treatments
promising radiant results. With two time-frame options,
the clinics skin-saving packages are sure to have you as
radiant as the stone he recently placed on your fnger.
Its a major commitment, but one that can save
the efort of running across town from appointment to
appointment. If you go with the four-month package,
in the frst month youll consult with staf experts,
begin a skin care regimen and meet with a nutritionist.
A medical facial as well as a microdermabrasion/peel
starts skin off on its new and improved path. The
following month, dentists, surgeons, wellness experts
and a life coach assemble with you to discuss suggested
tweaks. Oxygenating treatments to hydrate skin are
implemented during this time, and youll reconvene
with the nutritionist to discuss treatment successes. By
month three, youre well on your way to being a blushing
bride with another microdermabrasion treatment/peel,
photo facials for pigmentation issues, dental cleansing
and whitening. Ten, the fnal session in the fourth
month includes a vitalization peel to ward of fne lines;
an LED treatment to heal skin; and injectionables, like
Botox or Restylane. Wrap up with the nutritionist and
life coach, and put on fnishing touches with a calming
facial, teeth whitening and brow shaping. Voil! Bride-
to-be perfection for $6,950.
If time is of the essence, a three- to four-week
option may be the answer. Ofering a no-nonsense,
crash course for shaping up skin at a reasonable price
($495), the experts get you started with a Vitalize Peel to
minimize fne lines, then heal past transgressions with
LED treatments. An oxygenation treatment hydrates
post-peel, while a calming facial brings skin to a happy,
healthy state (think no redness, breakouts or side efects).
Add in dental whitening and brow shaping, and youll
be ready to say I do.

While your average bride may not have

inuenced invitations could very well
signal good fortune. Recent trends point
to the use of luxurious Far East elements,
such as Oriental tapestry patterns, Chinese

is nature-meets-glamour relationship has
been prevalent in the fashion and interior
worlds as well, and brides are jumping into
the trend Choos rst. Perhaps the use of
these unique materials is simply the mark of
todays creative bride, says Ernesto Leston of

shimmering chuppah
by Jose Graterol
Designs fanked with
golden spheres in
Lucite boxes
Whats in a name? For Jewish couples getting married under a
chuppah, considered to be the centerpiece of their commitment
to one another, its everything. Te four poles used to construct
it, along with the fabric canopy above their heads, represent the
home they will create together. Its an old tradition that has
endured, explains Kathryn Parrish, owner of Parrish Designs
(7032 S.W. 47th St., Miami, 305.665.0389, parrishdesignslondon.
com). But people have become more relaxed about it, fnding
unique ways to use them in their ceremony.
While nearly every Jewish wedding incorporates a
chuppah, no two are the same. Teir designs run the gamut
from simple f lowing fabrics to suspended structures with
foating candles. Yet even couples who arent familiar with the
symbolism are asking for overhead elements. Often our non-
Jewish clients see photos of breathtaking chuppahs and want
to include something similar, Parrish says. It certainly lends
itself to more interesting design possibilities.
Naturally its important that the structure matches its
location. Jose Graterol of Jose Graterol Designs (12605 N.W.
115th Ave., Medley, 305.788.0562, josedesigns.com) frequently
includes buds and blooms that could have literally been plucked
from the wedding venue. For a ceremony at Vizcaya [a historic
palazzo in Coconut Grove, Fla.], I used Spanish moss and
orchids, which anchored it to its surroundings, he says.
While foral designers are becoming increasingly creative,
actual fowers remain an important part of the equation. Karla
Dascal, owner of Karla Conceptual Event Experiences (100
N.E. 25th St., Miami, 305.644.3555, karlaevents.com), says she
prefers a clean, cutting-edge look where a single type of bloom
is used to cover an entire surface. I recently used more than
1,000 hydrangeas to create a pavd fower chuppah, she shares.
Its a very polished look and becomes a texture.
Beyond that, forists also want these structures to represent
the personality of their clients. Karen Cohen, co-owner of Always
Flowers and Events (60 N.E. 39th St., Miami, 305.572.1122,
alwaysfowers.net), recently constructed a blessing tent using
the grooms four surfboards as poles.
Graterol says he relies on refective and organic materials.
We can fll Lucite or acrylic legs with pearls or metal spheres.
We also have several structures that are completely mirrored,
allowing guests to see the faces of the bride and groom. And
an inverted mirror placed on the roof of the chuppah lets the
couple see themselves as they become man and wife.
A beautiful refection, indeed.

Altos de Chavon at Casa
de Campo is the Dominican
Republics Mediterranean
dream when it comes
to matrimony.
| By Lindsay Shapiro |
Floating amidst the clouds on clis above the Chavon
River in La Romana, Dominican Republic, roosts a
quaint 16th-century-inspired Mediterranean village that
some say is the epitome of diversity and panacheand a
dynamic space to host that perfect, all-inclusive wedding.
The brainchi ld of Dominican architect
Jose Antonio Caro and Italian designer and
cinematographer Roberto Coppa, Altos de Chavon at
Casa de Campo (casadecampo.com) is a 7,000-acre
playground of world-class features with an immense
variety, where you can do everything or nothing at all,
says Kim Hutchinson, the propertys spokesperson.
e venues appeal doesnt stop at its gorgeous
Caribbean Sea-washed beach (though its a beautiful
location for a linen-clad, barefoot wedding), as Casa
de Campo is replete with creative and picturesque
vantage points for the big I do. Altos de Chavon, for
example, is strewn with cobblestone paths, coral stone
fountains, terra-cotta buildings and bougainvillea-
draped balconies, all setting the stage for wedding
parties big or small.
Perhaps Altos de Chavons most popular venue for a
classic wedding, however, is its St. Stanislaus Church, the
50-foot, 16th-century-themed heart of the village. Ive
seen 70 to 80 people pack into that church, Hutchinson
says. Its simply divine. e plaza in front of the church
overlooks the river and golf course and is a popular
wedding location and a breathtaking overlook point.
For a truly over-the-top party, Casa de Campo
boasts a gorgeous 5,000-seat Grecian-style amphitheater,
too. Inaugurated by Frank Sinatra, and having hosted
artists like Sting, Julio Iglesias, Alicia Keys and others,
the site provides an intimate, yet larger-than-life setting.
Imagine it: celebrating under the stars with a band
playing as the Caribbean breeze tickles the skin.
As some of the locals would say: pura gloria.
The Grecian-style amphitheater at Casa de Campo
is the perfect venue for an extraordinary event.
FLI PPER THE QUESTI ON
Those who need assistance popping the question call on Lucky, one of the stars of the
Dolphin Connection Program at Hawks Cay Resort. One of four Atlantic bottlenoses
found at this luxurious 60-acre vacation destination halfway between Miami and Key
West, Lucky springs out of the water on cue, sporting a dangling sign asking, Will you
marry him? Trainers help the important moment go off without a hitch. Once the man
leads his intendeds eyes over to the horizon, they push over a feed bucket with a ring
box [sans herring] and, while Lucky presents the proposal, the man gets down on one
knee to await the answer. If requested, a photographer can also be present to capture
the moment. 61 Hawks Cay Blvd., Duck Key, Florida, 888.395.5539, hawkscay.com RA

SEA SOURCED
Clockwise from left:

Bays ceviche marinated
with citrus, peppers and
onions; and a sesame-
crusted seared tuna
Yes, farm-to-table dining and even barnyard I dos
are de rigeur, but for those of you hosting an island
wedding, the fare should be decidedly more aquatic.
Tanks to a few Caribbean innovators, couples can
now consider an ocean-to-table approach, where fresh
seafood catering reigns supreme and wedding party
shenanigans might include exclusive water adventures
where guests dive for their meals.
Te Regent Palms (regenthotels.com) in Turks and
Caicos has a lot for to-be-wed couples, but chief among
them is personalized attention, which is expected at a
place that only allows for one wedding a weekend. Te
Regent Palms organizes boating excursions with local
fshermen so guests can capture what will be served at
the reception. Te catering team may turn your haul into
conch salad or whatever the honored couple requests. All
menus are customizable, so tuna and grouper will most
likely be options, too.
Check out Te Brasserie (brasseriecayman.com) in
Grand Cayman for a casual rehearsal dinner destination.
In addition to having its own boats for catching seafood,
it boasts an on-site herb and produce garden. Choose
an intimate private garden afair or a larger party on
the lawn for chowing down on catch-of-the-day meals.
Located of Antigua, Jumby Bay (rosewoodhotels.
com/en/jumbybay) is also all about tailoring menus to
ft the needs and wants of brides and grooms looking to
get hitched on the private island resort. And if catching
your own mahi or kingfsh is what will elevate your
nuptials to exactly what you dreamed of, Jumby Bays
recently launched Sea-to-Dinner program can arrange
for a private deep-sea fshing trip so guests can play
angler for a day. Do this in style on one of Jumbys
sport fshing boats, which come with on-deck beverages
and snacks plus a professional crew who will walk you
through the entire process.
But if your concern is a bit more environmental
and sustainability focused, opt to get hitched over at
Kamalame Cay (kamalame.com), another super-luxe
private island hideaway in the Bahamas. Te property
partnered with marine conservation group BREEF and
Bahamian fshermen to harvest the invasive, yet delicious
lionfsh to create a fve-course tasting menu available for
a rehearsal dinner or the main event. Looking to get
your hands wet? Kamalame has its own boats that take
guests out for an unforgettable Caribbean jaunt. Catch
lobster, snapper, tuna or conch, or even just a tan. Either
way you have Mother Natures blessing.
Go Fish!
For swimmingly fresh reception fare, you and your guests should get wet.

While its true most wedding cakes are spotlight stealers, we who subscribe
to the more is more philosophy insist on surrounding these stunners
in oral glory.
For the focal points, Rosie Cunill, owner of Elegant Temptations
(etcakes.com), interprets owers abstractly. She suggests brides provide at
least two cakes with complementary color schemes because, Sometimes
one simply isnt enough to make a truly spectacular statement. To
represent South Florida and the Caribbean she incorporates fondant
shades resembling beach sand and concrete and brings in ombr violet
hues, too, claiming purple is a hot color for tropical weddings.
Complementing the cakes are creations by e Ritz-Carlton, South
Beachs (ritzcarlton.com) executive pastry chef, Jason Morale, including
chocolate desserts in the form of cake pops, mousse towers, tortes and
savarins. In fall and winter, go for warmer avors, he suggests. A lot
of brides are into the heavy, indulgent experience for guests. Morale also
uses edible owers both as a garnish and a avoring, claiming they add
a feminine touch and make heavy desserts more delicate.
Cristina Llorente, co-owner of Cymbidium Events (cymbidiumevents.
com), pulls the story together with details from Always Flowers and Events
(alwaysowers.net), including mercury and silver accessories, aubergine
cymbidium orchids, and a powerful 3-D paper backdrop. e inspiration
for the elements in this display came directly from the fashion runways for
the fall season, she explains.
Somehow, we suspect even Coco Chanel would gladly devour this
bold statementor, at the very least, approve.

As a television news producer, I had scripted the perfect
wedding to my dream guy for Oct. 29, 2011. Te thought
of getting married on Halloween weekend never scared
me but I sure got a horror story.
I was dead set on having an outdoor wedding at a
beautiful historic home in Fort Lauderdale. I envisioned
my fanc and I saying I do in the stunning gardens,
enjoying cocktails in the artsy courtyard, then feasting
and dancing on the banks of the lily pad pond.
Like any outdoor production, weather was a concern.
But when I asked the on-site wedding coordinator how
many brides had been rained out, she said her venue was
like Disney Worldthe rain always seemed to miss
them. I suddenly recalled a childhood photo of me in a
poncho at Disney, but I dismissed the image.
A quick weather research revealed Oct. 29 for the last
few years had been dry and cool, and hurricane season
was ending soon. Since I refused to end up in a stufy
ballroom, I settled on a backup tent. I rented the same
tent used at my venue for most weddings, so I wasnt
concerned when the forecast called for showers on my big
day. After all, how much could it really rain?
Never doubt Mother Nature. Halloween or not,
she can be a real scary witch. And I found out in the
worst way possible. In retrospect, I wish I consulted
someone like Andi Dyal at Anj Soires, who says to
never underestimate tropical weather, especially at that
time of year. From April 1 until Nov. 31, we plan that it
will rain. And we always, always have an indoor backup
space. We literally plan two weddings.
Probably fearing I would jump from my second
foor bridal suite as the black clouds descended, the
heavens granted us a brief break so we could marry in
the gardens. For a moment it looked like a romantic
movie set. But just as the gospel choir sang Oh Happy
Day, the sky opened up and did not stop.
Tings really started to sink at the reception. Our
tent was no match for the unrelenting rain and sideways
drops seeped under the tent. Wedding planner Melissa

Mother Nature.

Davis would have advised me better. Besides the frame
of the tent, you need sidewalls, she says. And then you
have to discuss putting a foor down, which can get very
expensive. Instead, I sat in my couture gown in a puddle
of water and watched as my dance foor turned into a Slip
N Slide. At one point, I snuck upstairs and got sick to my
stomach. My dreams of a perfect wedding were drowning.
The biggest disappointment was paying for an
outdoor space that no one enjoyed. I hated being trapped
in a tent; we could have been anywhere. But thats the
risk you take with an outdoor ceremony, and you have to
know that going into it. If your heart (and stomach) cant
handle it, play it safe with an indoor venue.
Ironically, our guests had a blast! Thanks to
experienced vendors, the rain didnt dampen anyones
spirits. If you look at my wedding photos, you never
would have known how badly it poured. And there was
a silver lining: My photographer was kind enough to do
another couples session a few weeks later. What bride
doesnt want to get dolled up in her gown again?
I learned a valuable lesson. But most importantly, I
married the love of my life that day, and no amount of
rain can wash that away.
For a moment
it looked like a
romantic movie
set. But just as
the gospel choir
sang Oh Happy
Day, the sky
opened up and
did not stop.

Though Isadore Izzy Havenick, vice
president of political afairs at Magic City
Casino, and Alexis Rivera, a news anchor for
WSVN-7, both have roots deep in Miami
soil, when it came time to plan their winter
wedding they toyed with the idea of holding
the event in a far-fung locale. We considered
having a destination wedding, she explains.
I tried to pick far and inconvenient places so
that only the people who really cared about
us would attend, asserts Havenick, whose
family owns the aforementioned casino. But
in the end, the Magic City won out. Every
milestone in our life has been in Miami so
it made sense that another one be here as
well, he says. One such milestone was their
meeting two years ago, an event orchestrated
by two matchmaking friends.
Tey chose the tony Mandarin Oriental,
a getaway slightly removed from downtown,
as the setting for their momentous occasion.

The ceremony was held outdoors
on the hotels waterfront patio which, at
the time, seemed like the ideal spot for a
December celebration. I always wanted a
winter wedding in Miami because its such
a beautiful time of year, Rivera says. But
Mother Nature had other plans: Ironically it
ended up being one of the warmest weekends
of the winter! Add to that the raucous boat
parade that made its way down the Miami
River as the couple was walking down the
aisle. Luckily it ended midway through, but
it was honking horns and blaring Christmas
music, she laughs. Two rabbis, one from
each familys respective congregation (Rivera
is Cuban-Jewish), married the couple since,
as she explains, Tis wedding was about two
longtime Miami families coming together.
Te reception was held in one of the
Mandarins vast ballrooms, with tables
for more than 400 guests festooned with
hydrangeas and black calla lilies. I never had
a picture in my mind. I just knew I wanted
a wow factor and I knew I wanted a lot of
fowers, Rivera recalls. To create a foral
spectacular, she enlisted the help of Karla
Dascal, a longtime friend and owner of Karla
Conceptual Event Experiences. Karla was
able to execute my vision, but it was a team
efort with me, my mom and Karlas team.
And as anyone whos familiar with Cuban
tradition knows, food played a prominent role
in the celebration. Te grooms must-haves for
passed appetizers: mini Reuben sandwiches,
mini lamb chops, mac and cheese, and trufe
fries. We both love trufes, so we had as much
trufe as possible, she adds. Tey danced to
Keith Urbans Only You Can Love Me Tis
Way for their frst dance and the party lasted
until 3am, with a DJ keeping everyone moving
and a late-night bufet of more comfort food
and desserts to keep guests satiated.
Rivera says her best memory occurred
between the ceremony and the reception.
Te moment I realized we were actually
married was at a set of stairs prior to going
into the cocktail hour, before people swarmed
us, and we looked at each other and we said
this is the moment well always remember.
As for the groom: It was the end of the
night. She looked at me and said, Tis was
the wedding I always wanted, and you are the
guy I always wanted to marry.

Bahamian
Rhapsody
For Laura Sansone and Grant Shaw, their
wedding was not simply a spiritual afrmation
of love. In a way, it was a relief. A long-distance
couple for fve years before becoming engaged
two days before Valentines Day in Sarasota, the
pair would fnally be dwelling in both the same
state and the same square footage.
But ultimately, the wedding ceremony
was an avowal of life. Four months after their
engagement, Sansone was diagnosed, with a
large brain tumor, she says. Grant stood by
me as I had brain surgery and 12 months of
chemotherapy. Te wedding was scheduled
between rounds of chemotherapy.
As if brain surgery, chemotherapy and
planning a wedding werent challenging
enough, Sansone and Shaw, who is in software
sales for Oracle, decided to hold destination
nuptials on Cat Cay, a tiny, private Bahamian
island where the brides father has a home. It
has been a special vacation spot for us, says
Sansone, a psychotherapist with a private

practice in counseling, says. Te island is
just magicala place where we can really
unplug and relax.
To that end, they made the wedding
weekend itself as magical and relaxing as
possible for their guests as well as themselves,
marrying classic luxury with seaside comforts.
Te Yacht Club was host to all the couples
guests for the weekend, from the Friday night
rehearsal dinner to hosted lunches, served next
to the glittering, crystalline freshwater pool.
The bride and groom married near
Sansones fathers house on Kitten Key Point.
On the brides side were her stepmother, who
she calls an unpaid wedding planner, and
her actual planner, Shannon Wilson of Table
6 Productions. Without their help, this event
would have never happened. I like to think of
myself as organized, Sansone says, but the
necessary attention to detail for planning this
wedding was something I was not capable of
during chemotherapy.
Because Cat Cay is a privately held
island with limited resources, the 130 guests
were chartered in from Miamiafter their
commercial fights were metas was the food,
the fowers, the cake and just about everything
else for the party. In addition, the island has
no hotel, so the wedding party and guests were
quartered in the residents beachfront homes.
In the end, not a single, stylish ball was
dropped. Te couples goalto have a really
fun party, with good food, good wines and
good musicwas reached. Shaw arranged
a stunning fireworks display as a special
treat and, in deference to island culture, the
wedding also featured a Bahamian junkanoo
band as well as a string trio, a DJ and the
band Higher Ground.
For those who couldnt make the Cat
Cay weekend, a second reception was held
two months later in St. Petersburg. After all
the celebrations were over, however, the real
one began: the duo recently bought their frst
house together in the Tampa area. And, best
of all, Sansone is cancer-free and able to look
back on her favorite moment of the ceremony
as a metaphor for lifewalking down the aisle
over uneven ground toward Shaw, on sky-high,
sparkly blue Louboutins, without reservations.

Take Two
Many couples face the challenge of having
their two cultures meet in one celebration.
Holding two weddings hardly sounds like
simplifying things, but Sasha Chatani and
Chadd Lucas did exactly that.
The couples first date was, literally, a
historic one. It was Sept. 11, 2001, and, like
most Americans, the University of Miami
undergrads had watched the news all day. To
unwind, they met mutual friends at a tavern
in Miamis Coconut Grove, and that first
attraction lasted. After graduating from the
MBA program at Emory University in 2008,
the coupleshe of Indian descent and he,
a Lutheran from Pennsylvaniasettled in
New York. In 2010, Chatani returned to her
apartment after a normal workday to fnd
it brimming with roses. As Lionel Richies
Endless Love played, Lucas bent down on
one knee and proposed.

Festivities began two days before the
weddings with a mehndi, or henna ceremony,
where the bride and female guests had
their hands and feet intricately painted,
symbolizing luck.
For the Indian ceremony Friday, the couple
wore apparel custom-made in New York. Te
families congregated on a covered, pillared stage
known as a mandap with the pandit, or ofciate.
Rituals included a walk around the fre (a fre
pit) representing the journey of marriage.
As a child, I always imagined my wedding
as an Indian one, says Chatani. Its about
families joining, not just individuals.
A sangeet party in the Sunset Ballroom
featured Indian street food (chaat) as well as Tai
and Southwestern cuisine. Friends performed a
Bollywood dance and the music of Indian DJ
Firoz soon had everyone on their feet dancing.
On Saturday, it was time to do it all over
again, this time in a classic, Christian, white

tea garden. The grooms hometown pastor

detail and Jimmy Choo shoes, Chatani married
Lucas for the second time. A plated four-course
meal, with entertainment by the Miami band
Higher Ground, fnished the evening.
Shannon Wilson, president of Table 6
Productions, enjoyed planning the contrasting
events. Te Indian ceremony was fun, colorful
and unrehearsed, she says. Te Christian
one was solemn, moving and deeply religious.
After, it was the only time I saw the bride cry.

Camille iry Russler may be petite, but dont be fooledin
the world of couture bridal fashion shes a powerful force.
Ever After, her Coconut Grove, Fla., boutique, consistently
ranks as one of the top multivendor retail stores in the world.
When she refers to Oscar, Vera, Reem and Carolina
trust that they know who Camille is, too.
Ever After is an exclusive retailer for many of the most
sought-after bridal gown designers in the market, with about
a dozen lines represented and price tags hovering around
$5,000 for starters and climbing upward of $40,000.
ough Russler dreamed of attending fashion school,
she appeased her parents by taking on a more traditional
career path and becoming an elementary school teacher. en
in 2002 a frustrating bridal gown shopping experience lead
to her true passion. Ever After was founded in the very spot
where, more than a decade ago, Russlers fate rst changed
dramatically. I was looking for a space and a friends husband
said, What about Murphys Law? at was the bar where
my husband and I were introduced.
She brought in construction crews and made her
vision of bridal-boutique-meets-gallery come to life, with
dresses and accessories displayed like art in uplit glass
cases. e boutique also houses a ready-to-wear section
with couture to carry any gal through the inevitable slew
of pre-wedding soires.
I work with three generations of women on a daily
basis, she explains. I feel very connected to them.
Russler denitively leads her clients down the path of
elegance, even if it means delicately derailing them from
over-blinging or ruining the proportions of a couture gown
by adding a train worthy of the royals. Fortunately, she says,
those interventions are more the exception than the norm.
My customers are women of today. [eyre] global, fashion-
minded and have an appreciation for art and a vision.
