LABORATORY SAFETY PROCEDURES


Never adopt a casual attitude in the laboratory and always be conscious of potential hazards. Never run in the laboratory or corridors. Always exercise care when opening and closing doors and entering or leaving the laboratory. Do not place any object other than a floppy disk or CD-ROM in the PC. Do not handle, store or consume food in the laboratory, particularly liquids. Do not apply cosmetics in the laboratory. Do not use laboratory apparatus without prior instruction on safe work procedures and practices Do not lift heavy equipment (PCs, oscilloscopes) and always switch off power at the general power outlet before unplugging equipment. Observe safety signs at all times. Keep benches clean and free from apparatus that is not being used. Keep aisles free from obstructions place bags in an appropriate location within the laboratory. Do not sit on work benches. Do not wheel from one location to the next on chairs. Let any co-workers or visitors know of hazards that exist in your work area. Take care to ensure that electrical leads are not weakened by pulling and that plugs, sockets, etc, are in serviceable condition. Do not insert any objects into power sockets other than power plugs. Report all incidents or near misses to your supervisor Hazard & Incident form to be completed. Be aware Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) can occur from prolonged use of keyboards or the mouse. Correct positioning of arms and mouse can minimise these effects. Shoes not sandals or thongs must be worn in the laboratory. Toes must be protected. Be aware that flashing lights or repetitive noise can precipitate seizures. Eg. Epilepsy. Mobile phones must be silent or turned off in the laboratory.

SPECIFIC SAFETY PRECAUTION FOR THIS LAB WORKS
Never turn on power supply before your instructor asked to do so. Periodically glance away from the screen. Staring into a computer monitor too long will strain your eyes. Let an instructor know if the color scheme, font size, or other settings of your computer are causing strain on your eyes. There are many built-in ways to adjust these settings for comfort. Avoid long sessions of typing as they may cause repetitive stress injuries to your hands. Maintain good posture to ease your back. Dont open the computers power supply or monitor. There is nothing inside either that can be repaired except by a professional, but there are many things that can injure you.
